How do you pronounce it and where are you from?

OP posts:

Arlmund (South Wales)

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/03/2022 21:32

@patritus

Where are people getting Ar from. There's no letter r in the word🤷🏼‍♀️
people who speak in a non-rhotic accent (SE England for eg.) describe an ahh sound this way. They would pronounce far as faahh, so to them R is silent. If that makes any sense! I'm no linguist.

Oll mund

@spanglyspaniel

Al-mund. While I get some people say Ah-mund - I don't understand those of you who put an R in there..? (Scotland SE)
I'm amazed this reached page 6 before the discussion/confusion about rhotic and non-rhotic accents started.

In a non rhotic accent the "ar" in words like car and hard rhymes with "ah", the r isn't sounded. In a rhotic accent (such as Scottish and many accents in the USA) the r is sounded, so ar and ah don't rhyme at all.

The 'l' in almond is silent. Just like it is for alms

And as it is in “walk” and “talk” etc.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/03/2022 21:50
@HemanOrSheRa Same here and I am saying it out loud. If you click on my link above you can hear it being said, both the UK version and the American version. I've been playing it over and over. Luckily I've got my headphones on otherwise my family would think I've gone crazy.
Grin. These threads are good! Although I get confused and somehow forget how I pronounce words from repeating them over and over, I love 'hearing' other accents Smile.
