Ukraine - Prepping

nanabow · 25/02/2022 18:27

Reading the AIBU for being worried about Russia retaliating thread got me thinking.

Is anyone doing anything to prep for potential retaliation from Russia?

I'm thinking more along the lines things that'll help get you through a cyber attack that brings down banking, electricity, NHS, etc. Rather than nuclear warfare.

Unfortunately, OP, having your daughter’s medical info printed off probably won’t be of use.

We had a cyber attack in Ireland last year on our public health care system, the HSE. Operations and appointments were cancelled as the system was literally unavailable for appointment and surgery scheduling. They lost access to 80% of patient information and diagnostics.

I’d image the NHS would have a similar experience in the case of an attack.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 21:43

Exactly

iheartmybeachhut · 25/02/2022 21:43

@Zilla1

FWIW, the iodide has clinical merit in circumstances beyond a nuke landing in the UK.

Radio--isotopes don't respect national borders unless Priti dons a high-vis or perhaps Truss puts on a headscarf and sits on a tank and channels her inner Mrs Thatcher.

Why would preppers be panic buying? I bought camping lights at end of summer sales. I have been drawing out dribd and drabs of my cash in case banking goes down for a short while. I have long life milk and pasta and tins from last year. So if the lights go out tell me please how any of that impacts anyone else?

If the shit hits the fan I can feed my kids for a month. If the lights go out I have five - ten year candles from IKEA to light. If the banks have a cyber attack I have some emergency cash. Like in the pandemic I never had to rush out and mix with any panic buyer. Sure my arse will melt like everyone elses but I wont be panic buying anything with anyone. That's not panic. it's common sense especially after the pandemic. people buying up all the calpol when I always have a full bottle since my pfb was two months old.

Somebodylikeyew · 25/02/2022 22:00

We live rurally. Between our dodgy power, snow, floods, Brexit, the pandemic and now this I generally always keep our cupboards and freezer well stocked, the cars filled, wood for the stove and a wodge of cash in the dresser. It isn’t easy for us to pop to shops and garages if something kicks off and I’d rather leave the shops as free as i can for people who can’t afford to plan.

You do what helps you OP.

Lovingthemalbec · 25/02/2022 23:26

Ugh I hate it when 'preppers' mock others. It is so unbecoming. True peppers would encourage you as they don't want you coming after their stash so anyone mocking here are amateurs imo! Everyone should be aware that the thought of war is a real anxiety trigger for some. It doesn't mean they aren't worried or scared for others that are going through it right now. Of course the majority of people are watching what is happening in Ukraine in horror, seeing those families , imagining how it must feel to be them which is why it is triggering an emotional reaction and the thought of how I can protect my family. It is human nature. So please get off your pedestal

gasty · 26/02/2022 00:14

I have long life milk and pasta and tins from last year.

How much pasta did you buy to get through the pandemic & still have some left over?

gasty · 26/02/2022 00:21

I've got a thermal imaging camera so I know which houses to target 😁

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2022 00:25

It's only February. 2021 was two months ago. I have 4 bags of pasta and four of spaghetti totaling £2 in value at 20p a bag. Hardly a shocking stockpile but it will last us a few months. Thing is I never get to zero of anything

gasty · 26/02/2022 00:34

I just assumed you had used it up during the pandemic so you didn't or you just bought more? I confess the prepper thing confuses me re disasters. Completely get it if you live somewhere isolated etc.

Tbf I could easily survive for at least a month if I cleared out my freezer/cupboards & are the stuff I don't want to eat!

gasty · 26/02/2022 00:35

How can 8 bags of pasta last a few months though? Is it like the MNs chicken 😆

SmellyOldOwls · 26/02/2022 01:57

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Do people think you automatically die following a nuclear drop? You don't get a choice you know. You can sit outside and play in the fallout dust then wait for the radiation sickness to see you off I suppose. It's very unpleasant and takes a while though. I'd rather remain indoors thanks.

Some posters here clearly never had to read Z for Zacharia at school 🏫

BlondeWidow · 26/02/2022 10:26

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

We're preparing for a nuclear attack.
If there's a nuclear attack we'll all be dead, love!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
BlondeWidow · 26/02/2022 10:28

@Preppers

I was looking into this. So far...
  1. I have withdrawn some cash to buy food if banks go down.
  1. I have all medical records printed, nothing complex here.
  1. We are keeping cars tanks full.
  1. I got torches and power packs topped up.
So you've panic-bought fuel? Hmm FFS! No wonder there's fuel shortages again!
BlondeWidow · 26/02/2022 10:32

@Firkinhavinalaugh

If banks go down, is there much point in cash? It will be worthless 🤷‍♀️ Trading in gold, silver and other physical goods will be more the norm.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh do please get a grip! This isn't Pirates of the Caribbean

burnthur5t · 26/02/2022 10:41

My DH is digging a bunker

BlondeWidow · 26/02/2022 10:44

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation It you're in Barrow then you're only a stone's throw away from Heysham Power Station....! ☢️

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:45

@BlondeWidow

How exactly do you think the process works? Please talk me through what happens following the deployment of a nuclear missile on site/s in the UK.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:46

I don't live in Barrow in Furness.

You've been told numerous times already on this thread!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:53

I already know, I'm asking you because you clearly don't.

Thisisit2022 · 26/02/2022 10:54

@nanabow
Or Children of the Dust or Brother in the Land...

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:55

Do you imagine it's like a Sci fi movie where everyone is simultaneously vaporised and the country obliterated?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:56

Bless. Are you frantically googling to find out how the process works? 🤔

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 10:58

Or are you chattin' shite because you believe a patronising throwaway quip makes you look good?
