Ukraine - Prepping

Reading the AIBU for being worried about Russia retaliating thread got me thinking.

Is anyone doing anything to prep for potential retaliation from Russia?

I'm thinking more along the lines things that'll help get you through a cyber attack that brings down banking, electricity, NHS, etc. Rather than nuclear warfare.

@EarringsandLipstick

What on earth are you preparing for though? I think you are just fuelling your anxiety tbh
It helps my anxiety tbh

@Paranoidandroidmarvin

In my head it depends on how long it goes on for. To be honest I didn’t think he would Invade. So I have no idea what could happen. I have taken money out for food if needed. But done nothing more than that. I learnt a lot during the pandemic that people are selfish. When the food ran out on the normal shelves everyone went to the free from aisle. And I ended up with no food. So u bet ur arse I have and will get more food.

People are already panic buying petrol again for godsake.
I have only bulk bought my food. Not others. I am not going to go through the worry and stress of two years ago.
I think anyone who says things won’t happen are just sticking their head in the sand.

This! I have coeliacs, I chose not to panic buy anything at the start of the pandemic and was frankly appalled at how people behaved.

I clearly remember watching people flood to the free from aisle taking multiple packs of pasta, flour etc as the regular ones were sold out.
More fool them, bet the selfish idiots are still munching their way through their sub standard chewy pasta supply! Grin
I only eat it because I'd get incredibly ill if I didn't!

Might need to escalate and tell the Russians to stock panic buying and stockpiling other nations.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 26/02/2022 13:19

🤣@BlondeWidow you’ve got me all wrong. I was trying to point out the futility of removing all your cash from the bank.

These threads raise the anxiety levels of the anxious. My only anxiety is for the poor people drawn into wars because of megalomaniacs. I’m not sure that we need to panic/prep just yet. And if we did I’d be more panicked about national conscription of our children than having to use a bike instead of my car. (And I’m older and live at the top of a very steep hill so a bike might finish me off 🤣)

On a different note I also don’t see the benefit to any country in a nuclear situation - the main players annihilate each other so who wins and what are they winning 🤷‍♀️.

So you learned that others were selfish & left you without so this time you are going to stock up. I mean fair enough but you can't really be judging then 😆

gasty · 26/02/2022 16:51

Do people think you automatically die following a nuclear drop?

Nope doesn't mean I want to survive & have to fight others for every resource though. Way too much agg!

@Legoandloldolls

Why would preppers be panic buying? I bought camping lights at end of summer sales. I have been drawing out dribd and drabs of my cash in case banking goes down for a short while. I have long life milk and pasta and tins from last year. So if the lights go out tell me please how any of that impacts anyone else?

If the shit hits the fan I can feed my kids for a month. If the lights go out I have five - ten year candles from IKEA to light. If the banks have a cyber attack I have some emergency cash. Like in the pandemic I never had to rush out and mix with any panic buyer. Sure my arse will melt like everyone elses but I wont be panic buying anything with anyone. That's not panic. it's common sense especially after the pandemic. people buying up all the calpol when I always have a full bottle since my pfb was two months old.

10 year candles?
Bigfishlittlepuddle · 26/02/2022 19:00

Having grown up at the end of the Cold War, the best way to prepare for a nuclear attack is to know today you may die.

For more information on how useless prepping is, I recommend Hiroshima Doctor by Michihiko Hachiya. When they were attacked, buildings were destroyed, their clothes were torn off their bodies, there was no water, no electricity, nothing.

Zilla1 · 26/02/2022 19:39

@lightand I agree, sounds shoddy. Expect John Lewis sell 100 year candles or perpetual ones.

@SmellyOldOwls

Tbh what I learned from covid and the panic buying situation was that you can't tell how long these things will last, and you probably won't be able to panic buy enough to see you through the whole of it. What I panic bought at the start of covid lasted a few weeks. The pandemic lasted 2 years and still going. The potential for war isn't going to be over in a day, or a week, or even a month. So what's the point in running out to buy a kilo of pasta and 5 tins of beans that'll only last until next Friday?
It can save you some panic which is what counts in these situations. Of course you cant stockpile for a year for everything but if you have a chance of not going starving hungry for a week why not. Noone forces you to do that yourself.
chairbumg · 27/02/2022 15:12

you have a chance of not going starving hungry for a week why not

What do you think all the other millions of people who haven't stock piled are going to do if they are starving hungry? Carry on working & going about their normal daily lives?
