Ukraine - Prepping

Reading the AIBU for being worried about Russia retaliating thread got me thinking.

Is anyone doing anything to prep for potential retaliation from Russia?

I'm thinking more along the lines things that'll help get you through a cyber attack that brings down banking, electricity, NHS, etc. Rather than nuclear warfare.

@cheddez

That was my point or did you not see the OPs title!
I see that now, my apologies. We took a lot of abuse during first lockdown.
gamerchick · 25/02/2022 19:43

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

We're preparing for a nuclear attack.
Do you really want to survive a nuclear attack though?
cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:44

I see that now, my apologies.

👍🏼

It's a bit late to prep now, it's a continual thing. We have got a generator but it's for supplementing the caravan with no hook up rather than prepping, they only run a couple of things anyway and are quite noisy.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/02/2022 19:50

There are threads on this already!

We really need a new topic for all this.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Did the pandemic teach you nothing about panic buying?
What did you learn? I learnt that I was grateful to be a low level prepper, as I was able to keep out of the shops and wasn't forced to join any queues for food. We even had a 24 pack of toilet paper in the loft and were able to give some of it to friends who couldn't get any. Is that the sort of thing you mean?
cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:54

@Ashford surely the OP and others posting similar threads are panicking not prepping.

Oh, thanks. I didn't even realise there was a preppers board.

I'm not usually one to prep but with a newborn at home I'm felling extra anxious about it [/quote]
Come and join us. There's a thread about this.

How long did you avoid the shops for?

Ashford · 25/02/2022 19:57

Yes, possibly, but OP has clearly stated she's thinking about what she can do without panic buying. The post I quoted looked like another prepper bashing one.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:58

Come and join us. There's a thread about this.

This reminds me of people who hate tourists (shudder) because they are travellers 😆

cheddez · 25/02/2022 20:01

@Ashford During the pandemic the preppers were at pains to stress they weren't panicking because they had prepared months or years before & it was everyone else who was panicking. And yet we have lots of "prepping" posts all of sudden...

nanabow · 25/02/2022 20:03

People are really making this thread into something it is not. It was meant to be sharing a few tips on things I could easily do that'd make be feel better prepared and ease my anxiety.

The terms prepping and preparation aren't exclusive to 'preppers', and seeing has a cyber attack hasn't already happened its still possible to prep for it.

I'm also not on about panic buying, stocking up my cupboards, or filling my tank when I don't need to.

Thank you for the people that haven't jumped down my throat. The insight into how the NHS is potentially better prepared than I'm giving them credit for is great also. Thank you.

Ours isn't, it's not an industrial one, DH got it for his outdoor stuff or if he takes the caravan, it was about £300 or £400, people use them for fishing and on boats. Amazon sell them

EarringsandLipstick · 25/02/2022 20:05

What on earth are you preparing for though? I think you are just fuelling your anxiety tbh

Ashford · 25/02/2022 20:06

OK Cheddez, have it your way.
OP has a newborn. She's feeling a bit stressed. I thought she might appreciate the calmer waters of the preppers board.
I stated my case clearly - I had bits in, it helped ride out a couple of weeks when the shops were a bit manic. I don't make any other claims.
Anyone who wants to prep has to start somewhere.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 20:06

Thanks

Woahthehorsey · 25/02/2022 20:06

@cheddez

Plus surely this counts as panic buying which preppers always try & distance themselves from?
Yep.

It's not prepping if you wait for it to be an issue!

I queued 10mins at the usually empty petrol station this evening, pumps closed as empty. I needed fuel because the light was on, but there were people with Jerry cans!

We're definitely in panic buying stations now.

nanabow · 25/02/2022 20:08

@Ashford

Thank you. I think I will, I think I'm in dangerous waters here

It's the collective action, if everyone takes money out of the bank for safekeeping or whatever that's what causes the problem.

Thewiseoneincognito · 25/02/2022 20:11

I’m not sure if prepping is necessary right now? If things get out of hand and escalate to a point where we are being attacked by Russia you’d be mistaken thinking we’d get by from prepped stocks.

A nuclear war would be catastrophic for us all, I doubt I’d find peace and comfort in my cupboards being full of tins and loo roll when the world outside was radioactive and society had collapsed.

User5rh · 25/02/2022 20:11

but there were people with Jerry cans!

Probably for their generators Grin DH often has to take a can down for his and for his boat engine, he does use a proper petrol can though not a Jerry can

cheddez · 25/02/2022 20:12

It's ok to panic but just call it what it is.
