Do you think Charles becoming King is very imminent?

The Mail are going mad on stories about exactly what will happen, and how it will happen. Now I know it's The Mail but we also know they do seed stuff out to the public

OP posts:
Tippexy · 13/02/2022 01:33

As opposed to somewhat imminent? Confused

AlternativePerspective · 13/02/2022 01:34

Maybe we should start a thread on whether your death is imminent. Didn’t think so.
Horrible thread.

DryOldCaper · 13/02/2022 01:41

They won’t skip to William.

The Queen won’t abdicate.

It’s boggling that there are people - in Britain no less - who think these things might happen. Confused

I’m on the other side of the work, and even I know these things will not happen.

Interested in this thread?

People who say it won't skip to William forget Charles could randomly die before the queen.

ilovesooty · 13/02/2022 02:04

@BeefSupreme

Ghoulish thread
Yes it is. Even someone putting in a date as though they expected us to have a sweepstake on it.

Of course everyone dies in due course but it's in poor taste to speculate about how soon someone might die.

DryOldCaper · 13/02/2022 02:04

Of course he could.

But then it doesn’t ‘skip’ to William. William is - very obviously - next in line to the throne. Confused

buddylicious · 13/02/2022 02:23

@ClariceQuiff

It's going to be a huge cultural shock for most people - just saying 'king' instead of 'queen'. 'The King's Speech' is a Colin Firth film, not what happens at Christmas.

I wonder if journalists are subconsciously trying to prepare themselves and us for this. A bit like I have been saying since I was 47 'I'm nearly 50' so it won't come as a shock when I have to say I'm 50.

They really aren't subconsciously trying to do this.

They are writing stories to sell newspapers!

WorstXmasEver · 13/02/2022 02:41

I think Charles should hand it to William & Kate instead.

LoveFall · 13/02/2022 03:00

As a Canadian, the Queen is ours too. I feel very sad to think she will be gone soon. She was born at a similar time to my Mum. I really admire her and proudly sing God Save the Queen.

I feel even more sad to say that honestly, the Monarchy as it will be soon holds no respect or affection for me. Almost none.

I think the internet, media, social media, and essentially all of it, has spoiled any chance of a monarchy thriving and inspiring confidence.

Kate is lovely but so are millions of young women. She has the perfect children, apparently. William shows a good example and has worked hard to show he has real skills and abilities. Good job.

But Charles and Camilla. A bit too much Squidgy for me. Sorry about that.

ShippingNews · 13/02/2022 03:08

If this was your granny and you were talking about her imminent death like this, people would say you were totally insensitive and morbid. So why is it OK to talk about the Queen like this ? I think this thread is horrible.

Of course not. It's the Monarchy, not a game of pass the parcel.
echt · 13/02/2022 03:47

@dipdye

Probably.

Will they skip to William instead?

Who is "they"?

The crown goes to Prince Charles. He can abdicate if he so wishes.

@dipdye they can’t. It simply isn’t an option. Charles wouldn’t abdicate in a month of Sundays. He’s been desperate to be king all his life - and man has he had to wait a long time for his role

How about Prince Charles having the same regard for abdication as his mother: not what one does, having seen the shitstorm visited on her own father.

It's OK, because while the Queen is a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she is also a head of state, so speculations are not personal.
CanIHaveASnaaaaak · 13/02/2022 08:19

Look up how the Privvy Purse works. The Royal estates make tens of millions per year, the Royal family only claims small percentage and the rest goes into government. (Those are the one costing us, the public, money!).

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 13/02/2022 08:23

Charles is so wet. He's not really King material. We'll be entering an era of hopeless politicians and a hopeless head of state.

Minifigure282 · 13/02/2022 08:25

Something is going on I'm sure of it. Over the last 2 weeks they've suddenly started reporting on Charles becoming king. I know the Queen is old but she could easily live past 100 however, she has lost a lot of weight recently. I do think it's imminent.

PAFMO · 13/02/2022 08:30

@UserBot9to5

Why do so many people think they might skip to William. I'm Irish but I understand the concept of succession. I can't believe that people think they'd skip one!
It's weird, isn't it? They've been going on about how William would be a better King than Charles since he was about 10. Like the main requisite is to be dressed in short trousers and sport the Royal Male Haircut. Obviously nothing to do at all with everyone's hatred of "the other woman" at all at all.
DappledThings · 13/02/2022 08:31

What a ridiculous question. Do you think there is a good chance a 95 year old woman might die soon? Well yes, obviously.

FindingMeno · 13/02/2022 08:34

Honestly I think speculation on when the death of a very old woman will happen is just a bit unnecessary and not really on.
Concentrate on real time situations like what's going on in Ukraine etc rather than dramatic speculation.
I'm no monarchist but the Queen is an actual person you know.

ToMockAKillingBird · 13/02/2022 08:35

I agree it's imminent. Big feature in the Mail (sorry) about Charlie's Coronation plans etc.
Just to pick up on a pp's comment about the Privy Purse and how the Royals are funded - they get a percentage of the profits of the Crown Estate. If the RF was abolished, all of the profits would go to the public purse. It is not the personal property of the Monarch.

Is he though?

He's the one cutting the monarchy down etc. I think he will reform it more than we think.

Hereforthefreecake · 13/02/2022 08:40

@justasking111

She appears to be putting her house in order. Maybe because of Philips death, time for reflection during covid lockdowns. I was wondering though . I hope not soon though
I thought the same. My own granny was the same when my her husband died. Had her funeral booked, paid for and hymn sheets printed out ready. Although he died when they were 65 (before i was born) and she lived until she was 92.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lose the Queen this year.

Louisianagumbo · 13/02/2022 08:46

@1Week

I'm not in the UK but I hope the Queen lasts a bit longer. When she dies its going to set off a lot of handwriting about succession, about constitional monarchy, and the last thing you guys need another 50:50 disruption.
Is it? When the Queen dies, Charles will be king. The monarchy will carry on. Honestly, MN might talk a lot about this, but I never hear it discussed in general conversation. And when she dies, I'll be very sad and I won't be calling it a "disruption".
Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 08:46

I think there are another few years in her but I do think that Charles will take even more of her role come mid summer after the Jubilee Celebrations.

More in a degate way than in an abdicate way. Possibly naming him as Prince Regent.

But I imagine Charles's coronation has been planned for years along with the funeral plans. And yes he probably has reviewed it and removed some of the pomp from it scaled it back a little from the last plan since he now knows Camilla will be by his side.

No he won't abdicate in favour of William. The thing people hold against him is effectively an arranged marriage failing that should never have happened in the first place.
William seems the ideal family man because he was able to take time and be certain of his bride before they married and her being a commoner didn't matter. The RF learned that lesson.
