Do you think Charles becoming King is very imminent?

The Mail are going mad on stories about exactly what will happen, and how it will happen. Now I know it's The Mail but we also know they do seed stuff out to the public

I like the Queen

No, I don't know her! I just have a fondness for her that I don't have for Charles.

I thought on the Feb Jubilee day that perhaps she might abdicate after the celebration.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2022 23:47

She's 96 and recently lost her 99 year old husband.

If she wasn't, and Charles wasn't thinking about how shes probably going to die in the next few years you'd be wondering wtf they were thinking.

3cats4poniesandababy · 12/02/2022 23:47

Well yes and no. These stories get rolled out everytime the Queen gets ill/it is a slow news day. Obviously the Queen is no spring chicken so the likelihood of it happening soon is high.
I think the jubilee offered the perfect time to announce camilla would be Queen but this decision was likely made a few years ago as it used to say on the royal family website that when Charles becomes king camilla will be Princess consult but this was removed a few years back.

I think it was taken for granted the Queen would live at least as long as the Queen Mother. But now it seems by no means certain. Over nineties can go downhill very quickly.

notagaim · 12/02/2022 23:57

My guess is 24th august 2023

sadpapercourtesan · 12/02/2022 23:59

My (limited) experience of death and dying in the very old is that there is often a strong psychological component to the timing. The Queen has lost her husband and has made it as far as the Platinum Jubilee, which may have been an important milestone for her. I wouldn't be surprised if she slipped away quite soon.

I do wonder how the whole coronation and the pageantry around a new monarch, which is steeped in Christianity and quite archaic ideas about kingship, will go over with a 21st century public. It's going to be interesting. I think they've had their time, personally. I find the institution embarrassing and anachronistic. But I do agree with a pp that the British public would still vote to retain it - though I wonder whether that will change, once the Queen has gone.

Joystir59 · 13/02/2022 00:00

He cannot become king unless the queen abdicates or dies. William cannot become king unless the queen abdicates or dies and then Charles either abdicates or dies. It isn't a role that can just be passed around!

I was thinking the same thing. I'm no Royalist, but I really think the Queen has offered a much needed sense of stability / almost 'security' (even if symbolic) over the last few years (E.g during divisiveness of Brexit, Covid). For example, her 'we'll meet again' speech seemed to act as a tonic for the nation, at a very difficult time. People took comfort in her words. There weren't many other public figures who could do this for the nation, certainly not any politicians. Without her, the Royal family will be significantly diminished in stature and reputation. It's not nice to think about life in this country without her. It actually worries me.

I think this too. I think she will psychologically will herself to make it to her jubilee and then the next cold after that.........

Ghoulish thread

CharacterForming · 13/02/2022 00:08

The Queen Mother made it to 101. Her DD leads a healthier lifestyle AFAIK and has had the benefit of 20 years of medical advances - including Pfizer's finest if she does get Covid. Obviously these things are a bit of a lottery, but I wouldn't be dusting down the carriages daily if I worked in the Buckingham Palace mews.

I agree. It's in poor taste.
Duracellbunnywannabe · 13/02/2022 00:17

Of course it’s going to happen ‘soon’. People don’t live forever. The palace never releases personal info about illness so that’s normal. If they denied the Queen having covid it means they would have to respond to every journalist question about covid or other illness otherwise they would assume they were correct.

Chloemol · 13/02/2022 00:23

@Gilead

I’m up for no monarch I’m afraid. They cost the government a fortune and I’m a citizen, not a subject.
So would a President

They do a lot behind the scene that most of us are not aware of relating to trade deals etc, not to mention all the tourists that appear

You really think anyone would visit to see President , Blair, Johnson or whoever?

caringcarer · 13/02/2022 00:30

The Queen is almost 96. She looks more grail than a year ago. She no longer has her husband of 70 years and she was unwell a few weeks ago. I know she gets the best of care but nobody can live forever. Her Mother lived to be 100.

1Week · 13/02/2022 00:31

It's not that people would pay to see a president or whoever- but there's been a monarchy in Britain for what- nearly a thousand years? That's not something to throw away lightly.

Making it to 101 is a rare achievement and it can't be assumed that her daughter will reach that. Losing your husband is an enormous shock to the system and it puts a huge strain on a person. That kind of strain is not easy to deal with for someone in their 90s.

Indeed the Queen Mother died only a few weeks after losing her daughter.

This. How horrible. You might as well have started a thread entitled do you think the Queen will die soon. Did you forget that she is a real person?
Backofthenet20 · 13/02/2022 00:53

Perhaps she has Covid from Charles? There hasn’t been much shared about this. Also she seems to be having some major circulation issues in the last few months, her handing looking very purple.

Amortentia · 13/02/2022 01:18

@Comedycook

and the last thing you guys need another 50:50 disruption

If there was a referendum in the UK on the monarchy, it would not be a 50/50 split. The UK public would vote overwhelmingly to keep the royal family

You sure? The last polls from 2021 showed between 55%-60% for and 44% for in Scotland. Support is lowest in younger generations. That was before the Prince Andrew court case etc. Once Charles is King I’d bet that support drops even further.

I think she will enjoy the Jubilee celebrations, then step back much more and allow Charles to basically perform the role of a king, until she passes on.

I think she may be gone by the end of this year, which will be a sad day, but nobody lives forever. Although some people might think this thread is ghoulish, I think it's natural that people will speculate about this, because the Queen appears extremely frail now. I'm sure the Queen is probably well aware that these discussions will happen more as time goes on, but I doubt she is trawling the net to see what is being said about her. I see nothing wrong with this discussion, provided nobody is wishing her gone or making other nasty comments. Hopefully people can be respectful to the Queen, even if they are not royalists - I think she deserves respect.
