Do you think Charles becoming King is very imminent?

The Mail are going mad on stories about exactly what will happen, and how it will happen. Now I know it's The Mail but we also know they do seed stuff out to the public

It's more 'imminent' than it was yesterday! However the Queen could continue on for some years yet. I don't see how any newspaper can claim it's 'imminent' as if they know she's on her last legs. From recent pictures she's looking great!

PAFMO · 13/02/2022 09:06

@ShippingNews

If this was your granny and you were talking about her imminent death like this, people would say you were totally insensitive and morbid. So why is it OK to talk about the Queen like this ? I think this thread is horrible.
Quite.
girlmom21 · 13/02/2022 09:07

Yeah if the Queen is going to abdicate The Mail aren't going to be the first people do know.

She won't abdicate - she'll just take on less and less if her health deteriorates.

Certainly will be in the next 5 years. The Queen Mother died age 100 so looks like HM is following her mum's long life
We will get new coins, new banknotes, new stamps how weird will that be!!

PAFMO · 13/02/2022 09:12

Anyone who thinks Charles will be/is wet really has another think coming.
He's the one who 30 odd years ago wanted rid of all the hangers on who really did just show up on the balcony at weddings and do sweet FA the rest of the time while living in 50 room apartments in KP. He's been portrayed as a drip since he was a teenager, yet he wasn't the male royal who left university because of the "pressure" or couldn't hack a stint in the armed forces is he?
That appalling actor in The Crown has only contributed to a portrayal of some Mr. Bean parody.
We know nothing whatsoever about what kind of King William will be. Charles will do just fine.

This thread is in really poor taste.

crochetmonkey74 · 13/02/2022 09:29

I disagree that it is in poor taste. I havent expressed delight or ghoulushness around it. I have wondered like others, in real life as well as on here if the news stories being released are attempting to soften a blow that is coming soon. The queen is our head of state, things that happen in the royal family affect the mood and stability of the nation. This is not the same as comparing her to a family member of mine. She has international sway. So yes she is a normal person and I know that, but she is not 'only' that. It is not ghoulish to discuss what will happen or when things might happen. In all organisations, contingency plans are made for things like this, it doesnt take away the human factor

60 minutes Australia recently had a documentary on YouTube about what will happen when the Queen dies and the future of the monarchy. I tried watching it but found it ghoulish the way they talk about someone who is alive, what will happen when they die but I understand there is so much protocol around this. She is well into her 90s now and unfortunately at this age anything can happen fairly quickly to you so we will definitely be seeing King Charles in the coming years which is why I think the announcement has been made about Camilla becoming Queen.

Sunnysal · 13/02/2022 09:37

I've thought the Queen hasn't looked particularly well for quite some time. She has always looked very robust, but she's rather frail now.,

OvaHere · 13/02/2022 09:39

I know it seems in bad taste to discuss it but I'm quite certain it's a big topic of conversation behind the scenes with all the people who run the machine of monarchy, probably the government too.

In a way it's no different to when a major CEO steps down and all the details have to be discussed. Just in this scenario it only happens when the CEO dies.

My gut feeling is that Charles will take the throne within the next couple of years. Even 5 years at this point seems a tad optimistic. She sadly looks very old and frail now in a way she didn't even 3 or 4 years ago.

I think most people (of a certain age and above) will probably be surprised how sad they feel when it happens. Even those who care little for royalty. She represents a sort of stability in an unstable world and it will be an end of an era moment regardless of what anyone thinks of the system of monarchy or her as a person.

She has been Queen all my life and my daughters life but she was also Queen to my grandmother and my mother who are now both deceased. I think her death will represent a lot of different things to different people which will be expressed through collective grief, just as happened with Diana albeit for slightly different reasons.

On the surface it will probably look a bit insane to anyone not British or in Commonwealth countries.

You quote the Mail. Talk about contingency plans for Charles' Coronation. Speculate about whether she has Covid.

Your bar for ghoulish must be set pretty low tbf.

dottydodah · 13/02/2022 09:46

Maybe in the next few years .At 96 the Queen is still working hard .Probably the only person in her age group to be doing this! Perhaps she would like to put her feet up! Watch some Antiques Roadshow/ listen to R4 or whatever. I personally think PC with Camilla alongside will be perfect for our country .

AngelinaFibres · 13/02/2022 09:47

@justasking111

She appears to be putting her house in order. Maybe because of Philips death, time for reflection during covid lockdowns. I was wondering though . I hope not soon though
She has looked very frail recently. Her clothes seem a lot baggier than they did. They filmed her planting a tree at home recently so she was wearing normal clothes rather than her 'going out dressed like the queen' clothes. She looked like any old lady in town. I don't think it will be long until she has gone.

Do you think she suddenly looks weaker because she's been hidden away for much of the last two years?

dottydodah · 13/02/2022 09:50

The Queen Mother lived a long time until 100 plus .However her workload was a lot lighter! My own DGP both died at 95(5 years apart) but DM was ill and died at 85.

Isntisironic1 · 13/02/2022 09:51

@Gilead

I’m up for no monarch I’m afraid. They cost the government a fortune and I’m a citizen, not a subject.
How? How do they cost a fortune?
Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 09:55

I agree the Queen Mother's workload especially in her latter years was a lot lighter.
She'd also been widowed much younger. Loosing Philip will have been a massive blow to the Queen and the strain of covid.

If the Queen gets to hand over to Charles it might increase her longevity but then she could end up giving up as she has nothing to live for

We will get new coins, new banknotes, new stamps how weird will that be!!

Why do people keep saying this? We will just continue with the ones we've got. Even in the 1980s, there were still coins around with George VI on.

Daisydoesnt · 13/02/2022 10:06

It was seen to be very bad taste for the media to talk about what happens when the Queen dies. However, as she broached the subject herself (by saying that she wishes Camilla to become Queen Consort in her recent 70th anniversary speech) I think the media now feel the topic is fair game. Hence the slew of coverage.

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 10:16

I think HMQ giving Charles her blessing to have Camilla as Queen they in turn have changed the Coronation plan.

Its well known that the Senior Royals all have funeral plans that are reviewed frequently. And it's clear the Coronation was already planned.

The Queens was slightly different as her DDad died relatively young, hence a year between her taking the throne and being crowned.

Charles isn't exactly young I suspect his Coronation will be within 6-9mths of him taking the thrown. Ideally they'll want to time it for summer, and hopefully a dry day.

Yes - they didn't fully disappear until the sizes of the 5p and 10p were reduced.

I used to love getting a George VI shilling or two shilling coin in the 80s.
