Do you think Charles becoming King is very imminent?

The Mail are going mad on stories about exactly what will happen, and how it will happen. Now I know it's The Mail but we also know they do seed stuff out to the public

I wouldn’t be too sure of the result of a monarchy/republic referendum, support, and interest, really isn’t there amongst a younger demographic

Couldn't disagree more. It's like when there's a general election and no one seems to admit to voting to Tory! If you looked at social media you'd be absolutely convinced that labour would have a massive victory. Then, the conservatives get into power again.

A referendum on the monarchy would be a slam dunk. The royals would stay.

I feel a bit sorry for Charles. How many people begin a new job, albeit one he's been trained for all his life, in their 70s? Most people his age are well into retirement.

I hope he does have a couple of years being King, and then quietly pass it to William and have a lovely few years retired with Camilla where he can relax in a way he's never been fully able to.

I'd like her to get past the Jubilee though, because I think that would be lovely for her.

I can't see Charles abdicating

There’s a frequently used phrase in politics: ‘Pitch rolling’. It’s a cricket metaphor; cricket pitches have to be flattened with a heavy roller to prepare them for play. In politics, it means preparing the media & public for a big announcement on an important change of policy or direction.

This is what’s currently happening with the Queen and the succession. She’s ancient, obviously, and there may be facts about her health which are not being publicly disclosed. She clearly isn’t going to go on for very much longer so the pitch is being rolled and the public prepared for what will happen next. The announcement that Camilla will be Queen Consort is an obvious example and we should expect more of the same.

GellerYeller · 13/02/2022 11:43

Is it possible that these news stories are trying to drum up interest for the jubilee events and deflect from the Andrew situation?
It stands to reason Charles will want to reform elements of the monarchy- he's had 70 odd years to think it through.

Thank you, I think this is what I was getting at (poorly)

@Comedycook agree that of course they would. Only a misinformed fool would want them gone.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/02/2022 11:52

I know this isn't the point of your thread OP but I am curious to see what happens with Prince Andrew once the Queen is gone. Charles has all but told him to GTFO of Windsor Castle and without his mum he's pretty much fair game; the royals won't let him 'tarnish' the institution. He better drink all the expensive champagne and caviar now, I hear they don't even get marmalade in prison.

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 11:56

I don't think Charles will abdicate either, certainly not while Williams kids are in school.
He's already past normal retirement age and I doubt he has the fitness his father had at the same age so he'll rule as long as he can before his health deteriorates then he might hand over.

I think they'll be a more modern 'retirement' approach to the Morach in time than the current work work to you die approach we currently seem to have.

The last Pope retired, and I'm sure a European Monarch did the same with no real rebellion or moans that its not the done thing.
I think this is the last time you'll see a reigning Monarch in their mid 90s

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 11:59

Andrew will be banished from sight. Charles and William will see to that.

Zilla1 · 13/02/2022 12:16

part pitch-rolling, part quid pro quo - Camilla as Queen to reduce the flak as it was one of the wishes of HMQ in exchange for air cover for favourite son Andrew whom otherwise Charles would throw to the wolves?

Ameanstreakamilewide · 13/02/2022 12:19

@dipdye

Probably.

Will they skip to William instead?

It doesn't work like that.

Primogeniture is non negotiable.

GiftWrappingLikeItsXmasEve · 13/02/2022 12:27

They are planning celebrating platinum Jubilee in June, so imagined it would be after that. It really is inevitably soon.

Tsuni · 13/02/2022 12:32
@Isntisironic1 BasicyIm against a monarchy in principle. It costs a fortune and has no place in modern society. The age old tourism argument isn’t valid, France, Spain, other European countries haven’t suffered from a lack of tourists and neither will we.
Spain has a royal family.

gogohm · 13/02/2022 12:39

I have a feeling she will step down in June ... just after the jubilee obviously. The coronation will already be pencilled in before it's even announced so there's only a short gap, early autumn ... just a hunch.

sadandcrazy · 13/02/2022 12:50

@WorstXmasEver

I think Charles should hand it to William & Kate instead.
They've got a young family. William wouldn't want it.
dottydodah · 13/02/2022 12:51

I dont think this thread is "ghoulish" as such . The Queen is our Sovereign head of state. As such she is a figurehead of our Country .It will obv be of public interest to us to know how her health is .Obv not unreasonable to wonder how our Royal Family will continue into the future. Personally I think Charles and Camilla will be fine figureheads as well .

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/02/2022 12:56

It can't be very imminent just as something cannot be very unique. It either is or it isn't. However, the Queen is very elderly and has had a big emotional upheaval with the death of her husband last year. She may not live to 100. I suspect Prince Charles is far more likely to be head of state for 10-15 years then step aside for William than to rule until his death.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/02/2022 12:57

I don't think Charles will step aside. He's been waiting for this his whole life. I'm pretty sure he'd like to take the crown with him into the afterlife if it were possible.

Wonnle · 13/02/2022 13:01

I think the whole idea of a King of Queen is ludicrous is this day and age , once she dies that should be it all done and dusted !

luckylavender · 13/02/2022 13:01

@dipdye

Probably.

Will they skip to William instead?

That's not how it works
itssquidstella · 13/02/2022 13:01

@sadpapercourtesan I totally agree about the psychological element. After my grandma died, my grandfather didn't want to live any longer. However, he knew that the family was looking forward to celebrating his 90th birthday in a couple of months. He definitely didn't want to survive until what should have been his diamond wedding anniversary a couple of months after that. He died about a month after his birthday; I’m sure he 'chose' to go in some sense.

luckylavender · 13/02/2022 13:01

@Emmelina

It really could be any time and not be a shock, given the Queen is almost 96. Within 5 years is a certainty I would say.
Although her mother lived to over 100
girlmom21 · 13/02/2022 13:15

@Clytemnestra4

Morbid I know but I’ve been wondering if there’s some kind of Plan B ‘contingency plan’ for what happens if the Queen dies before all the celebrations planned for June. Maybe it would all go ahead, just adapted to be a celebration of her life.
This is probably why the 'day of thanks' think has become part of the weekend's celebrations, so if she does die before then they don't need to cancel the bank holiday and it'll just have a different meaning.
RussianSpy101 · 13/02/2022 13:16

@dipdye they can’t. It doesn’t work like that.
