Has anyone else gone off Wordle because of the tactical players trying to always get it in 2 or 3!!!

I know it shouldn’t matter and I’m trying not to engage. I started wordle a month a go after a conversation with a college tutor. I love word games and puzzles etc and working things out. Was having a few good guesses and then lots of friends, colleagues and fb contacts are playing now, but nearly all of them are using words like adieu, unity and arose each time to start so they can solve it as quickly as possible. Which obviously is fine and their right. I like to put a random word in then see if I can get it before the end, love the challenge and am still on a 100% streak.

I keep getting ooh I beat you etc and it’s pissing me off, ruining it and I’m throwing my toys out!!!

I just play for myself & don't discuss it with others. They can't try and compete with me if I don't engage.

SunshineThelma · 12/02/2022 11:56

So they're playing the game, within the rules of the game, with words that are on the game's list, that you could also play if you wanted to?? and you don't like it? Huh?

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2022 11:57

I look at whatever I was last reading and choose a five letter word from that.

Having just read your post, I think I'll start with "streak"

Showing off that they beat you is unfair.
Using a sensible starting word is, err, sensible? Starting with something like Mummy, with loads of repeated letters, isn't going to get you very far, is it?

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2022 11:58

^^ or maybe NOT since streak has six letters!!! I can't count

nosyupnorth · 12/02/2022 11:59

Sounds like the problem is less that they're playing tactically and more that they're being incredibly immature about it 'oooh i beat you' when you are doing it for fun rather than competing with them. alas it seems like competitive people can never grasp that not everybody wants to be in a competition with them.

piglet81 · 12/02/2022 11:59

Steak instead then Grin

arethereanyleftatall · 12/02/2022 12:00

Eh? They play it how they like, you play it how you like. Yabu.

gogohm · 12/02/2022 12:01

I just need to beat my mother, so far so good - beat or equal dd too most days. We are all quite competitive and good at puzzles but it's friendly rivalry. The looser and vet the next 2 months is buying the afternoon tea in April when we are meeting

Playplayaway · 12/02/2022 12:05

I've just hidden a friend on Facebook because of her daily wordle update. It's getting ridiculous.

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/02/2022 12:07

Why does it matter what other people do.

EishetChayil · 12/02/2022 12:07

Playing tactically is surely the object of the game. I always start with adieu, irate, media, or another word with a lot of vowels. It maximises my chances. Why wouldn't I?

Hummingbirdcake · 12/02/2022 12:07

I never talk about Wordle, I just do it.

BamberGascoine · 12/02/2022 12:08

@listsandbudgets @piglet81 I started yesterday with “stake”

I'm properly clever but the biggest mindfuck that wordle has brought to my door is how many five letter words actually have six letters.
BamberGascoine · 12/02/2022 12:09

@arethereanyleftatall if I wanted to know that I’d have posted in AIBU.

I use the same starting word every time but it’s not adieu or anything like that, I just picked a word to stick with. I can’t change it to something more strategic now in case it comes up, it’s like playing the same lottery numbers.

MandyCarter · 12/02/2022 12:16

Just lie to them Grin

ColonelPine · 12/02/2022 12:16

No I haven’t gone off wordle - I’m one of those tactical players! But I don’t like to show off about my successes. I think it’s mostly luck anyway to be honest.

Phlora · 12/02/2022 12:18

The fun for me is picking a random word to start. Nothing more boring than getting yellow a e and s on your first go Grin

Today's was prick and I still got it in 4.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 12/02/2022 12:21

I never compare, apart from with DH.

I am firmly of the view that starting with the same (generally 3 vowel) word or small range of words is denying yourself half the fun and challenge. I go with a five letter word I latch on to during the first part of the Today programme - was the first five letter word but it's always "party" or "virus" at the moment!

BadPlaceJanet · 12/02/2022 12:22

I do what you do OP, think of a different word to start with each day. It's more fun that way. I have mostly 4s and 5s but it hasn't beaten me yet. My OH is an adieu starter who is ruthless about getting it in as few goes as possible. He's very into Scrabble and anagrams and that sort of thing generally.

I show him my grids sometimes just to wind him up with my inefficient methods Grin

I ditched Facebook years ago so no competitive types to annoy me anyway.

I do think there are two types of Wordle players. The analytical/competitive and the random/just for fun.

BamberGascoine · 12/02/2022 12:24

@Phlora your word today was Prick? Mine aas different. Isn’t it always the same word? I’m playing on browser not the app though.

@MiddleParking yes!! I know what you mean

I’m glad its not just me!!
