Student loan refund

thehillswerebright · 09/02/2022 13:46

Just thought I would share this as I know a lot of people are struggling just now and I only found out about it recently.

If you have a student loan with SLC and don't make the repayment threshold for the year then you can claim back payments you have made. You can find the threshold limits on the gov website. I think in scotland it's £25k. If you get a refund then it means the balance goes back onto your loan so that's something to think of. I called today and they could go back about 10 years and check it was very simple.

@TidyDancer

The only sticking point for me might be this circled bit. I can't remember my full income going back that far so will need to get them to check.
I'm repaying plans 1 and 2 and my income was/is more than the circled bit so they've said nothing for me sadly 😩

Fab thread though OP - you've made so many people very happy! Well done!

Sorry for the idiotic question but is there any point in me trying to get a refund if I am planning to pay the loan back? The loan balance would go up if I get a refund so I would have to pay it off later anyway, right? I got excited at the prospect of getting money but I do want to pay it all off and got a bit confused. Blush

I don't understand this but think I need to. I have a loan from 2008 and I am on maternity leave now. Would it work for me?

I'm very grateful to you OP as I have managed to get over £400 back. I just wanted to mention to others though that I also got someone on the other end who was not at all helpful and quite grumpy. Initially, I think my request wasn't worded particularly well but I still got the distinct impression that they knew exactly what I was looking for and used that to their advantage. I gave up and rang a second time on a different day. Got the same person, however this time I worded my request more clearly and was quite direct. I still got the audible sigh... but all has gone through fine 😊 Thanks again.

Gingerbeerfear · 07/03/2022 14:42

How did you word it to get a good result?

therightmugiscrucial · 07/03/2022 14:48

Gingerbeerfear -I specifically said that I wanted to check if I was entitled to a "below threshold repayment". That's when I got the sigh..Grin

If you don't need the money at the moment, and you're due to pay it off within the next few years then there not much point as yes, the rebate just gets added back onto the total (plus the small amount of interest which would likely be a few pounds only).

But if paying it off is a long while away and you could really do with the few hundred quid now, even just to have a buffer of it in your account so you aren’t so precarious month to month, then do ask for the refund.

Gingerbeerfear · 07/03/2022 15:33

Well spoke to a lovely lady who found me with all the details I gave mr sigh write a letter.. all sorted and refund on its way. Definitely the wording is key

roseberrycherry · 07/03/2022 15:54

Thanks to this post my husband has just found out he's entitled to £245 back! It will hit his account within 6 days. Thank you OP!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/03/2022 15:58

My refunds have come through individually (one per year), and the largest of those is missing. I'll ring in a few days if it doesn't appear.

Coffeekam · 07/03/2022 16:05

Wow so pleased £480 coming back to me

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 07/03/2022 16:24

DH made the call today... £3.

He left it 😂😂😂

VioletVesper · 07/03/2022 16:57

Thank you so much OP! £131 for me. Might not be a lot for some but we are due to complete on the purchase of our first house next month and scraping together everything we can for the deposit plus legal costs. April happens to be my son’s birthday month so I now no longer have to feel bad about doing party and small gift or presents but no party. Thank you!

£755, thanks OP!
That's an epic amount!

Has anyone else been telling absolutely everyone they know to ring and check. So far I have my sister, 2 friends, my husband and 3 colleagues who have all also got refunds. Grin

IrrelevantNameChange · 07/03/2022 17:40

Yep I am beyond chuffed, April is a tough time of the year even without cost of living increases, so this is amazing!

SpaceyCake · 07/03/2022 18:16

@PearPickingPorky Thank you. That makes sense. I am tempted to go for the refund but I think I'll leave it because I want the whole loan gone asap. I am going to tell my friends about this refund though. Grin

Yes, I think i've told everyone at work and I must sound like a broken record. Grin It's working though, as 2 of those who have called are due refunds, so they're also telling everyone at work. Hopefully by the end of the week the 3 of us will have convinced everyone to call. 😂

Audible Sigh Man has asked for this thread to be deleted. He must sigh at everything though.
A below threshold request can't be much different to all the other queries he deals with.
