Student loan refund

Just thought I would share this as I know a lot of people are struggling just now and I only found out about it recently.

If you have a student loan with SLC and don't make the repayment threshold for the year then you can claim back payments you have made. You can find the threshold limits on the gov website. I think in scotland it's £25k. If you get a refund then it means the balance goes back onto your loan so that's something to think of. I called today and they could go back about 10 years and check it was very simple.

Wow I just called with only my national insurance number and they helped work out my SLC reference number and a sum is now on its way to me. Thank you so much OP, that was perfectly timed for us. Thanks

MapleSpice · 03/03/2022 11:54

Thank you for this! I've tweeted them so will let you know the outcome!

Beees · 03/03/2022 12:03

Fuck me this is why I bloody love mumsnet!!!

12 minutes on the phone armed with only my national insurance number and I'm 300 quid better off than when I woke this morning!

Thank you so very much OP! Offering a much needed bump so everyone sees this post. It's such a nice surprise and will hopefully help others who are also worrying about rising bills.

Thanks OP i have tweeted them...I've had a few years where I have changed jobs and had maternity so I'm hoping I'm entitled to something!

How long is it taking everyone to get a response on Twitter?

Just call them. My call took ten minutes tops.

Definitely just call them, mine took less than ten minutes.

11 minutes on the phone with just my national insurance number, name and dob - £120 refund.

I'm on Plan 2 & they are adding 3x more interest each month than I pay off so I'd rather have the money, as I've got no hope of clearing it.

pupcakes · 03/03/2022 17:13

So pleased people are getting money back- OP you're amazing.

thehillswerebright · 03/03/2022 18:14

I'm really glad this has helped so many people. Not student loan related but some of you might be in a similar position to myself and receive some tax credits or universal credit and might not know of the governments Help to save account. Basically you can save up to £50 a month for 4 years and at the end of year 2 and 4 you get a bonus of half what you have saved... for example at end of year 2 you have saved £200, the government will give you £100 as a bonus. You can find it on the government website if anyone is interested. I know it's hard as hell to save just now though but it's something that I don't think enough people know of.

Yes OP you truly are a star!

I'm currently waiting for the bath to fill for the toddler so have just been back through the thread and added up the amounts people have listed. This excludes those who have said they are getting a refund but don't list an amount. You have enabled people on this thread, yourself included, to receive refunds for a whopping £4603 so far!!!

That's an amazing accomplishment for a stranger on the Internet on a site often dismesssd as a nest of vipers. Well done hills you should be incredibly proud of how awesome you are! Flowers

My dd has had her student loan calculated on the whole of her £30000 salary for 6 months. Do you think they will refund?

They should do, but not until after the end of the tax year in which she made the payments.
HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 03/03/2022 20:42

@PearPickingPorky

This might be relevant for women who have been on maternity leave too, as their earnings for the year would be lower.
If you were on mat leave wouldn't you just not pay it then?
HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 03/03/2022 20:44

@pupcakes

My £600 is in my account today!

Woohoo!

Yeah, I literally just said, I've been told I could get some money back for earning under the threshold some years and she went away and checked the last two years and came back with figures and asked if I wanted to withdraw.

Awesome! Could really do with this just now 👍
PearPickingPorky · 03/03/2022 20:48

When I went on mat leave I had been paying my contributions for 6 months based on my normal annual salary as they assume it's going to continue at that level all year, and then my income dropped and the student loan wasn't deducted those months, but I didn't get an automatic refund for the months I did pay the normal amount when at the end of the financial year my overall income totalled less than the threshold.

Move22 · 03/03/2022 20:48

Say someone got a bonus in Sept £5k

Went on maternity October

Earned for the year just under the total threshold

Yes, they would be entitled to a refund.

Or even, they earned three thousand per month went on maternity July ….again potentially will earn under the threshold and would be entitled to a refund

WhenwillIlearntoadult · 03/03/2022 21:34

My loans were written off last year. I never earned enough to repay them but I did make a couple of payments at times when I was late returning my deferment forms. I might call and see if I can get that back. I actually picked this up on a thread about donations for Ukraine, so if I’m successful, that’s exactly where I will send whatever I get.

thebigpurpleone · 03/03/2022 22:07

I've been on maternity leave too definitely going to call especially with the huge increase in cost of living. I can't believe the price of my weekly food shop.
