Student loan refund

Just thought I would share this as I know a lot of people are struggling just now and I only found out about it recently.

If you have a student loan with SLC and don't make the repayment threshold for the year then you can claim back payments you have made. You can find the threshold limits on the gov website. I think in scotland it's £25k. If you get a refund then it means the balance goes back onto your loan so that's something to think of. I called today and they could go back about 10 years and check it was very simple.

Another early bump to help spread the OPs fantastic thread. 😊

Thank you for this. As a result of this thread, my DH got £45 back. Which isn't loads I know but better than a poke in the eye!

I agree. It's a brilliant thread, and I hope more people see it. 😊

Thank you so much for this thread! 434 coming back! Quick question - how long ia it taking? I rang last Friday so it's been almost a week now.

Gingerbeerfear · 10/03/2022 08:23

4-6 days they told me so I’d imagine tomorrow or Monday for you?

rurallibralady87 · 10/03/2022 15:04

Thank you very much OP, an 11 min phone call and I have £222 on its way to me. Brilliant thread.

Geneticsbunny · 10/03/2022 16:03

Whoop. Thank you so much. I got nearly £1000 back!

MentalMini · 10/03/2022 16:47

This couldn't have come at a better time for me. Shocked by my new energy bill I decided to phone on the off chance and have £500 on its way back to me. Only took 5 minutes. Thank you

Whinge · 10/03/2022 19:18

I'm so pleased to see more MNetters getting a much needed boost.

Here's another bump. It only takes 5-10 minutes, and who knows how much you could be owed. Grin

UselessTrees · 11/03/2022 15:29

Thanks very much, OP - I've got £187 coming back to me in return for ten minutes on the phone just now Grin

Whinge · 14/03/2022 07:57

It's Monday and the phone lines open soon. Hopefully those who have missed this post see it and decide to call, who knows how much you might get back. Grin

livvymc · 15/03/2022 20:29

I don’t have a student loan so it’s not relevant to me but just want to say what a lovely thread this is. Amazing to see so many people happy! Take a bow OP, you’ve cheered a lot of people up this week Grin

NeededAction · 22/03/2022 10:41

Bumping this thread back into active- thanks OP!! Few hundred winging its way back to me.

Call after April 6th for 21-22 tax year :)

MentalMini · 28/04/2022 13:14

Thanks again. Gave them a 2nd call today and i will receive over £100 for the last tax year 😀

Thanks for this - they went back to 2000/2001 for mine. The only 3 years I was under the threshold are when I was on maternity leave x 3 but I have claimed £216.00 back, yahoo!

Thank you!

I received my P60 today and am a bit gutted I earned <£500 over the £25k (in Scotland, not sure if its different elsewhere) threshold in 20/21 (& paid around £500 to my student loan in deductions!) so no further claim for me, but good luck to everyone else!

So I think you should have only paid a % of the £500 you paid over threshold?
If you've had nearly £500 deducted that doesn't sound right - I'd give them a call & see if you can get the overpayed difference back?

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/04/2022 18:24

*you earned over threshold

queenofcauliflower · 28/04/2022 18:43

No, apologies if I wasn't clear. I earned over the threshold so the £500 or so deducted I assume was correct.

I'm just gutted as I was just over the threshold.

Rayray18 · 27/05/2022 12:30

Thanks again for this thread! I just phoned student finance, it took about half an hour but totally worth it ... I'm getting over £1100 refunded from when I earned under the threshold 5-10 years back!!! I'm over the moon!

Tiltedclone · 12/06/2022 08:25

How long has it been taking for people to receive the refund? I was told around 20 working days, they also haven’t confirmed how much I’ll be receiving. I’m just shy of 20 working days and wondering whether to contact them again

When I called a few months ago they gave me the exact amount of each year I'd overpayed, & it was paid after about a week.

hidinginthekitchenwithwine · 12/06/2022 10:50

presumably if you've got a student loan from 5 years ago and have always earned under the threshold you can't claim anything?

Well no because you've not paid anything.
