Should people be able to officially identify as whatever they like?

With the news that Bristol university has issues guidance to staff on the correct use of pronouns for students identifying as cats (catgender) has it now gone too far?
Surely if someone seriously believes they are a cat, then they need a doctor and a reality check not pronouns and validation?

I feel very sorry for those that were born with human physiology that identify as trans-cats. But particularly those that were also born into the wrong sex. I don't know how accepting the cis-male cis-cat population is going to be of trans-female trans-cats.

FOJN · 08/02/2022 10:20

So what if he applied for a job as a bra fitter? Would you want your daughters to be fitted by him in a private cubicle?

This has already happened, M+S if I recall. My memory is vague on the details, it was a couple of years ago.

MagpiePi · 08/02/2022 10:25

I am identifying as the 10 million euros lottery winner and demand my winnings.

The fact that I didn't buy a lottery ticket is irrelevant...

@Snippysocks come over to the feminism board for more real life incidences of this.

We have self id in Ireland all a man has to is say he’s a woman to use toilets changing rooms& every unit else.

My brother was in a hotel recently with his 2 girls, 7&8. The girls came out of the toilets & told him there was a man in there. My brother confronted the beardy bro who smirked & said ‘I’m a woman’.

This is where I am what I say I am leads

DS2 told me about this very thing at the weekend. Year 10s had an assembly on it with a cat person (furry ?) from the year below stood with a cat mask on, meowing explaining all about it 😱 He thought the whole thing was ridiculous and couldn't get his head around it. I'd be extremely worried if I were their parents. Sounds to me like they have been going far too deep into the internet.

Grooming in plain sight.

Do people still get treated for anorexia? Or do they now get validation that they are actually hideously obese and are fast tracked to recieve help with extreme dieting and exercise regimes so that they can become their true selves?

BestKnitterInScotland · 08/02/2022 10:30

I am identifying as a member of the Royal Family. From now on, you shall refer to me as "Her Royal Highness".

To refuse to do so is royalphobic.

maslinpan · 08/02/2022 10:36

I am going to send my cats down to Bristol to sit and stare coldly and relentlessly at any idiot claiming to identify as a cat.

inheritancetrack · 08/02/2022 10:39

Short pronoun video.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2022 10:44

@Mothermorph

I wonder what the rules would be if you brought an actual cat or dog to lectures (after all they might identify as a student?)
I think they draw the line at students merely identifying as having paid tuition fees.
Cuck00soup · 08/02/2022 11:14

@Spottybluepyjamas

If this is true then I'm really glad. Hopefully it will make the general population wake up and see that identifying as anything outside of your DNA is absolutely ridiculous.

Sex not gender, human not cats.

This. If this is what it takes to prove that pronouns are a) bollocks and b) a safeguarding issue hidden underneath "be kind". I'm all for it.

I'm a manatee.

SelfIdentifiedOAP · 08/02/2022 11:45

Ooh! I identify as the Queen. I must share the palaces and 27 homes with the other woman claiming to be Queen. Or better still, scoot over Charles, I'm next in line.

Ooh Ooh (Phoebe-style), I identify as the PM. Off with you, BJ and cronies. Now this shitshow of our country can be fixed.

MsFogi · 08/02/2022 11:55

I think this is what needs to happen to show up this shit show for what it is - if everyone who thought this self-identification stuff is crap they should spend a week identifying as whatever they place (and suddenly changing how they identify), the country would grind to a halt within hours.

On a more serious note anyone reading this thread who is wondering what on earth is going on should check out the following websites:
Fair Play for Women
Transgender Trend
Woman's Place
Safe Schools Alliance
And of course the Feminism Sex and Gender area on MN

Afolnerd · 08/02/2022 12:09

This is great news for my 5 year old who currently wants to be a triceratops when he grows up.

No idea what the pronouns for that are though.

ODFOx · 08/02/2022 12:16

Much as I want to froth over this I'm struggling to find the alleged guidance on the Bristol University website as part of the guidance for how to treat staff or students.
Can someone please provide the link?
Thank you

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 08/02/2022 12:23

I think it's going to far now. The other week someone was telling me about aquagender or something where you change your sex depending on how close you are to water HmmConfused

I'm going to identify as a bed and get some sleep Grin

Hear, hear, I agree, very well said! I object strongly to being coerced into saying things I know are not true, or into colluding with delusions or fantasies. I don't care what someone wants to PRETEND to be in PRIVATE but no one should ever be manipulated , never mind forced, into going along with it! Biological reality IS real!
savethecactus · 08/02/2022 12:36

@MsFogi

No it is obviously bollocks (literally in some men's case). However if we do one in this direction I am going to identify as a 6 year old and go back to school, I reckon I could do pretty well if I could start over in year 1 or 2 (although I suspect my legs may seize up sitting on those little chairs all day) and I will be on every school sports team.
I think you'd have a discrimination case if they don't provide you with suitable equipment. What kind of a school discriminates against 6 year olds just because they're 5'8" and have middle aged knees?

Does this mean Bristol Uni would accept my cat as a student? She's pretty smart, but the education system has disadvantaged her by not letting her sit A levels or study using her own language and learning styles, so no actual paper qualifications which is totally society's fault.

I could do with the maintenance loan to help with food/vet/cat sitter costs while she studies. In fact, I might consider offering 'support' through uni to another couple of cats who are struggling with being excluded from the education system...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/02/2022 13:09

Identifying as something implies the opposite of reality.
If you really were whatever it is, you'd just say I'm x not I Identify as x

So simply put, yet so profound – and 100% true.

Someone had better warn these self-identifying cats not to go to certain parts of China where people regularly eat cats.

Probably better to avoid anybody called Alf, too. I’d also (sadly) stop listening to Alison Moyet records, just to be on the safe side.

When people believe they are something they are not, they need help to align their thinking with reality, not the other way around. When people want healthy limbs amputated, we don't all affirm them in their choice and go ahead and amputate their limbs. We counsel them into accepting the objective truth that their limbs do not need removing. The same goes for gender. You can feel, ever so strongly, that you are another gender, but that doesn't make it true. Those who affirm them in their delusion are not being kind or "loving"; they are being cruel and deceitful.

You are speaking the absolute truth…. but this has actually happened – over 20 years ago. This one surgeon at least has form for it:

MsFogi · 08/02/2022 13:10

@savethecactus Grin I wish I was 5ft8 ......if only I lived in a world where my wishes could magically turn into reality by believing I am what I want to be......

savethecactus · 08/02/2022 13:19

@MsFogi you are 5'8" if that's how you feel inside. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise...

misscockerspaniel · 08/02/2022 13:20

@MintJulia

I think someone on the board of Bristol Uni has a fine sense of humour. They are making the point that self-identification is valueless and self defeating. It's a cuttingly accurate view of all this nonsense.

British wit is alive and well. I love it. Grin Grin

More likely that the students received a form to complete and someone mentioned the word pussy Grin
FadedRed · 08/02/2022 13:23

Anyone else getting the repeated “Feliway to stop your cat spraying in the house” advert on this thread?
