Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

@mahoncash

Rebecca Loos is absolutely lovely . She was treated horrendously by the press - much like Monica / when David / Bill were the ones at fault. We failed women BIG time in the 90s

oh ffs did anybody make these women get into bed with married men? Not saying the men were innocent but don't go on like they were victims.

Ok maybe not Rebecca but Monica Lewinsky was very young and naive and Bill Clintonwas in the ultimate position of power. Not just compared to her but compared to everyone else in the world! He really should've known better.

John Major having sex with Edwina Eggs Currie in his office. Shock

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 09:31

The John Major/Edwina Currie revelation was like finding out your dad had been cheating on your mum with the headteacher from your school 😬

'Jason Orange and Lulu'

Say whaaaattt?

CharacterForming · 05/02/2022 09:33

David Mellor having sex in his Chelsea strip was completely fabricated by Max Clifford to make the (true) story about the affair sell better. Even though it was a total lie it wasn't defamatory so there was nothing Mellor could do to stop them saying it.

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 09:33

Yuck, it's true about Denise and Gary. And the hideous way the article is written is typical of the 90s.

True about the rumours being around that is, who knows if her ex was actually telling the truth 🤷🏻‍♀️

Was bloody funny though wasn't it? "Edwina and John, said 'let's get it on. . ." As one of the less ribald rhymes began.

mahoncash · 05/02/2022 09:40

She was 22-23 when she had the affair, old enough to know better. And I wouldn't class that age as ''very young'', it's a full adult. I'd see your point if she was 18. Again this is no defence of the men, they were both jerks but to say these women were in any way victims is horse shit. They were every bit as bad as the men.
Worse is that Loos made a career out of being a marriage wrecker. I'm no fan of Victoria Beckham, couldn't care less but I agree with Charlotte Church when she said it was disgusting how Loos seeked fame by trying to ruin another woman's marriage and humiliating another woman and by this I very much agree.

@OhWhyNot

He liked to wear the Chelsea strip
Oh good lord. So did my friend's ex husband. He wasn't dissimilar in appearance to David Mellor. Maybe he modelled himself on him.
Lurleene · 05/02/2022 09:48

Remembered another. Liz Wagstaff, a make-over expert on Changing Rooms, pretended she had cancer. She got thousands of pounds out of people 'for treatment' before she was found and eventually jailed.

Anthea turner and the Flake bars at the wedding
Oh I'd forgotten about that, but I remember reading the article and having a little giggle.

I enjoyed the article you linked OP, thanks for that, comedy writing from an obscure internet hack, they deserve to go far. Was everything really just so much funnier in the 90s or am I looking back with rose tinted glasses?

Tillymintpolo · 05/02/2022 09:59

The changing rooms episode with the tea pots (not celebrity scandal as such but sticks in my head)

Natsku · 05/02/2022 10:00

MP Neil Hamilton and the cash for questions things. I remember on Have I Got News For You they kept referring to him as 'disgraced former Tory MP Neil Hamilton" when his wife was on the programme and she kept asking them to stop calling him that.

Jeffery Archer and the perjury stuff.

And of course the Angus Deayton scandal, I was gutted about that because then he stopped being the host of HIGNFY

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 10:00

Go Fug Yourself is not that obscure! They've been around for years and quite often get coverage in bigger outlets around the time of events like the Oscars etc.

I can't believe Julia and Kiefer were 31 years ago!

Other big 1s were James Cameron cheating on Linda Hamilton around time of Titanic and her getting a massive 50 million divorce although stories like these might have being bigger stateside.

Ted Danson from Cheers got stung bad in his divorce too after his affair with Whoopi Goldberg around 93ish and their relationship was very published and controversial especially after he did the African American jokes she wrote.

Margot Kidder aka Lois from Superman films was found homeless in LA after a mental breakdown in 96.

Lynne Perrie aka Ivy Tilsey in Corrie was very big at a time especially after her appearance on the Word[i think] where she made alot of strong sexual comments about bestiality etc and then she went on a x rated show sucking a man young enough to be her grandson off. She was sacked from Corrie after getting her lips done.

Demi Moore was another pretty controversial figure in the 90s, Striptease got big publicity I recall but ultimately was the beginning of the end for her and effectively ruined her career as a leading lady.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Sharon Stone and the leg crossing in Basic Instinct.

Nah it was Twirl wasn’t it😂😂

I remember the first episode after the scandal hit was almost painful to watch. Ian and Paul weren't going to let it go 😬 But Angus has done ok for himself since with parts in various tv series.

@CheeseMuffin TC did a great job, and, actually, only someone with his level of ego and entitlement could have played Lestat in that era of his life Grin I am so looking forward to the mini series and gutted that she died recently and didn’t get to see it.

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 10:06

The tv coverage of Will Carling getting into his car and leaving his wife as she stood there sobbing with their child in her arms. Bastard. It was heartbreaking for anyone who saw it but not for Mr Carling.

ChickenStripper · 05/02/2022 10:07

@Mulhollandmagoo yeah but Fergie is actually worse now - could never break away from her ex, continues to live with him and supporting Andrew now. She is a sad specimen.

Snowflake I think. Basically a white flake. How do I know this shit?!
mahoncash · 05/02/2022 10:13

I'm pretty sure it was white chocolate (but still Cadbury

it was the snow flake which was flake with white chocolate inside them. It didn't happen in the 90s though as the bar wasn't launched until 2000.
