I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

TV was massive in the 90s as there was only like 4-6 channels in UK/Ireland so if a shocking thing happened in a soap it became national scandal.

Brookside probably was very memorable for this. Anna Friel doing the lesbian kiss in Brookside was massive as was the storyline where she and her mum murdered the dad and buried him under the patio. You couldn't open a paper without it there.

The gay kiss between Tony and Simon in Eastenders was massive, my mate was around year 11 at the time and the actor who played Tony's dad was their teacher in the Gaynes school in Upmimister Essex, the pupils were all on about it to him-shocked his son had kissed a man on tv.

I recall Martine Mc Cutcheon and the press interest in her was massive too as was the press interest in Home and Away characters like Shane and Angel whereas they became icons.

Certain soap stars back then were massive celebrities.

The 90s were definitely more innocent. Does anyone remember when News of the World or other tabloids used to have a big exclusive, they’d advertise it on TV. The subject of the story would look very sincere and say something like ‘read my side of the story in this weekend’s News of the World’. And then you’d have to wait and hope your parents bought it, so you could read salacious tales of shagging footballers.
