Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

Just googled 2000.

Pleaseacceptmyusername · 06/02/2022 21:24

I'd forgotten about Naomi! Although I was trying to stay within the 90s! I've just had to Google celebs who've kicked off at the airport - too many to mention. I reckon it's more unusual to not have an airport scandal when you're mega famous

browneyes77 · 06/02/2022 21:33

@Fizbosshoes

This isn't really a scandal but I had tickets to a take that tour, and the papers had pics of the costumes they had for Relight My Fire and one of them had chaps with his bum cheeks out. My mum was absolutely appalled that that was what we were going to see!! 🤣
That was my beautiful god of a man Howard Donald 😍😍
userxx · 06/02/2022 21:38

@Quackpot

Michael Jackson being a nonce

Don't mince your words.

whynotwhatknot · 06/02/2022 21:38

@longwayoff

I know *@whynotwhatknot*, she was absolutely distraught by the death of their son, Sebastian, I believe he was called. As any parent would be. I was horrified that he could be so callous. Even if it were true, what kind of person would do that to his wife and mother of his other children? Utterly despicable, I can't express enough contempt for him and I'm glad that he fell for a young woman, 30 years younger, I think, who 'took him for every penny' as he described it. That she was also awarded their pet dog seemed perfectly just to me.
good im glad he got fleeced nasty bastard
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2022 21:41

Sort of reminded by the Milli Vanilli debacle, and more technical hitches than actual scandals, but the two separate episodes where Owen Paul and All About Eve were waiting patiently to mime along to their hit songs, completely unable to hear that the recorded tracks were already well underway!

Also, the Tub of Lard on HIGNFY - his career never went anywhere after that Grin I'd never heard about Angus leaving because of something related to one of the team captains; how intriguing. I can guess which captain, though.

I haven’t read the thread because it’s too long.

But I’d like to throw in Richard Bacon doing drugs and getting fired from Blue Peter. I remember some kind of somber explanation from the presenters telling us that he’d left..but I’m not sure if I’m imagining it.

I think the producer made an announcement at the beginning of the show.
RJnomore1 · 06/02/2022 21:51

Why on Earth do I have no recollection at all of coisty shagging Kensit????

I never liked Barrymore. His humour was always at someone else’s expense. I didn’t like that

I do remember the shock at Robbie leaving e w and suddenly kicking round Glastonbury taking drugs with the Gallaghers!

No one has mentioned Jeff Buckley going for a swim in a break from recording and drowning in the Mississippi. Not a scandal but a complete tragedy.

Serrina · 06/02/2022 21:56

Michael Barrymore coming out after being married for 20 years

Im2022 · 06/02/2022 21:58

Thanks @Marmelace, I know someone explained something. And I also remember how sad the presenters looked that day like Richard had killed their grandma.

Serrina · 06/02/2022 22:02

Not 90s but early 00s - Courtney Love and Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge). Like, how??? Shock

CovidCorvid · 06/02/2022 22:08

Stuff starting to come out about Michael Jackson liking young boys!

CovidCorvid · 06/02/2022 22:11

And Hugh grant been arrested for sex with a prostitute in a car.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 22:12

@leccybill

Just pushing into the 00s, but Billie Piper and Chris Evans getting married.
Wasn't she only about 17 at the time?Confused And later married the gigantic arse that is Laurence Fox!

I know, it was all so sombre. I bet they got loads of extra viewers that day.
MazzleDazzle · 06/02/2022 22:25

I remember watching Richard Bacon give an interview about it in a documentary and he genuinely seemed gutted and embarrassed by it all, especially when he spoke about how disappointed his parents were.

Considering how widespread cocaine use is was ans still is, those behind the story were likely hypocrites, revelling in his downfall. Glad to see it didn’t harm his career in the long run.

Quackpot · 06/02/2022 22:25

@userxx I like to get straight to the point.

I know it upsets people but it happened.

I used to be a lostprophets fan. Until, you know....

You can't pretend people are decent just because they make good music.

I can't listen to their music any more. Any of their music.

MazzleDazzle · 06/02/2022 22:25

was and still is 🙄

ScrambledSmegs · 06/02/2022 22:31

Not scandal but weird gossip about Anne Diamond's unpleasant ex.

A family member was in the same friendship group as Mike Hollingsworth's extremely young (then) girlfriend, later ex-wife. They were all invited to a housewarming party and apparently it was incredibly awkward, with MH trying to be all matey with the early 20's men of the group but misjudging it hideously. They didn't stay long.

They all lost touch with her after that as she kept trying to include him in all of their social events.

ScrambledSmegs · 06/02/2022 22:39

I forgot the pertinent point which was that at the time he was in his 50s. Embarrassing dad wasn't the half of it.

MermaidEyes · 06/02/2022 22:41

I can't listen to their music anymore. Any of their music

Me neither. That's possibly the most sickening thing I think any celebrity has done.

lapasion · 06/02/2022 22:42

The Richard Bacon apology is unintentionally hilarious. She’s just so stern about it. Reminds me of when you’d go to the headmistresses’ office and she’d tell you how you let the school down.

Shame we didn't get the episode on how to make a rolled up £50 note from a toilet roll tube and some sticky backed plastic

longwayoff · 06/02/2022 22:44

Smegs, That will be the one that cost him. Send my congratulations to her should you ever meet againGrin
