Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

Was gonna say about John Leslie and Abi Titmuss..their threesome and him being accused of rape..
Lesley Ash and her abusive husband.. when she ended up in hospital (punctured rib, black eye) blamed a wild night. She is still with him..?
Plus all the other scandals at the time as have been mentioned. Good thread btw xx

The whole 90s was dwarfed by Kurt and Courtney IMHO.

I think it was more early 00s but Leslie Ash getting totally dragged over her lip fillers. So many jokes and nasty articles at the time. If she had them now, nobody would care. Or she’d get a Daily Mail article about how she looks ‘fresh faced’.

She went to great lengths to say her injuries were definitely the result of very er, active sex acts and she had fallen off the bed.

It's funny you should say this as I don't remember this rumour, however I once randomly spent an afternoon with Take That AND Andi Peters and he literally did not leave Gary's side. To the point that he came across as very rude. I had to laugh at one point though as we were walking through Covent Garden and a little boy pointed at Andi and squealed "mummy, it's Edd the Duck"

One of the Appleton sisters used to go out with Robbie and then later married (or had a kid with) Liam.

This was after Liam split with Patsy Kensit and I think she'd long broken up with Robbie by then.

I'm a huge fan - I know of the taxi driver altercation. However, he and Paula Yates were a toxic combination. His family even said this wouldn't have happened were he still with Kylie or Helena. Paula was very troubled.

It happened when Michal was still with Helena and he was in a fight, fell and hit his head on the kerb. As a result, he lost his sense of smell and taste and never recovered it.

Interestingly, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll also lost her sense of smell and taste after falling down a lift shaft.

I think one of the more shocking things about Michael Barrymore was that he was this much loved married family comedian and entertainer, until it suddenly came out he was actually gay, abusive, and had drink and drugs issues. That, and the swimming pool incident, pretty much killed his career.

That wasn't a scandal. It was fantastic and he should have been knighted for it!

Though there's rumours that they're unofficially separated too, and she's been shacked up with Andrew Parker Bowles for years! He does get around...

No she's not with APB! But she shagged him when she was young. So did many people apparently.

I don't think she's split from Tim. My friend's dad is really into... lighthouses* and they often visit them together. Some are appearances but some are just for fun.

I remember reading his obituary in The Guardian at lunchtime in my office and starting to cry. Pre- internet I hadn't even heard of this death until I saw it reported.

The were filming the Children's Royal Variety Show at the Dominion in '92. We were waiting round the back and Take That kept poking their heads out the window, so that's where all the fans were. I had to call home from a phone box round the front and was on the phone to my dad when Mark Owen appeared so I just hung up on him They were off to lunch in Covent Garden and let us tag along. Made my year that did

She’s got a lifetime ban from British Airways. When we did our annual crew licences they often told us she was always trying to get it over turned. A lifetime ban is quite rare.

Actually I think she got a shorter ban, thinking about it.
