Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

@JaneJeffer I did not mention P Yates or M Hutchence-
must be a different poster but that’s the one I never heard at that time.

longwayoff · 06/02/2022 16:49

Poor Paula. Can you imagine the trauma of discovering your father was someone you despised rather than the man who brought you up? When the Sunday paper printed the story - and a pox on the man who revealed it to one and all at Hughie Greens funeral without letting Paula know anything beforehand - you wouldn't have needed DNA, she was the image of him, once you knew about it. And her mother denied it. Continues to deny it I believe even with DNA evidence. No wonder she felt rootless and clung on with such ferocity. Very, very sad.

I didn't mean you @Lovecatsnonstopbutcanthaveany I was laughing about you knowing more music than your husband.

Second paragraph was just a general comment!

I barely remember what Jarvis did, but I remember my absolute shock at MJ’s revolting performance and shocked that it had been allowed!

It's so bizarre, too. And those poor children. She was very troubled. Very insecure it seems :(

Kurt Cobain Sad and the follow up regarding Courtney.

Agree. Although maybe MJ saw it as "I'm innocent so why shouldn't I?"

(Not that I'm saying he was!)

Amanda Holden checking with Neil Morrissey.

Investigations starting into Michael Jackson's inappropriate relationships with boys.

Lisa left Eye burned down her boyfriends house.

Tupac's death.

LaDamaDeElche · 06/02/2022 17:51

*cheating

TheRemotePart · 06/02/2022 17:59

Wayne Rooney having sex with the granny hooker. He and Colleen weren’t physical at that point. Pretty sure she was still a school girl ( that in itself was mad- taking photos of her in her little jacket walking to school)
Pretty sure Jamie theakston caught cheating on jolie Richardson with a hooker too?
Didn’t Kenneth Branagh cheat on emma Thompson with Helena bonam Carter ?
Also , count down to Charlotte church turning 16 wtf.
Everything that happened on TFI Friday. Shawn Ryder unable to stop himself swearing all the way through it live, at 6pm. Brilliant.
Yates/hutchence tragedy ( but she was the one saying he hadn’t killed himself he was fatal-wanking-accident? I never knew it was her that pushed that -always assumed the papers?)
Barryman and poor Steven in the pool
( if I was in CBB that would’ve been the first thing i would’ve said to him when he was being a bully)
Chicken Stu and Michele in big brother shagging under the table …

BadHairDayExpert · 06/02/2022 17:59

Am watching Pam and Tommy now! Wink

Monopolyiscrap · 06/02/2022 18:02

I don't think Michael Jackson was innocent.
But even if you do, it was in bad taste to have that performance during child abuse allegations being investigated. Most people would have more sense.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 18:06

I think the "granny" sex worker Wayne Rooney went to was only in her 40s but people still think he was shagging an OAP! Still grim though.

Ken did indeed cheat on Em with HBC and they were together for a few years afterwards. But Emma ended up with the lovely Greg Wise so I think she's probably ok!

Apparently the Sun didn't have a countdown clock to Charlotte Church turning 18. That was just some random weirdo who had a website that was reported on by a number of outlets. Mandela effect!

Didn’t The Sun have a countdown to Sam Fox (I think) turning 16 in the 80’s ? Just vile

Nailsbythesea · 06/02/2022 18:09

Can’t believe it but Charles and Camilla shagging and him wanting to be a tampon and we were all promised ‘we will get married but Camilla will not be queen absolutely not ‘ and then mummy announces it is her dearest wish she is queen (camilla)

Fergie having her toes sucked and selling Andy Andy and Andy pandy flying round the world (like Harry) and lecturing everyone on trade when he hasn’t got two brain cells to rub together.

Anne shagging her equerry in front of daddy and captain mark and announcing her divorce

John major shagging edwina currie

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 18:11

In all the Tampax Charlie talk I forgot about Diana's incriminating phone call - with a guy (a James but not Hewitt?) who called her "Squidgy"!

Anne shagged the equerry in front of her husband and Prince Philip? What on earth goes on at those Sandringham Christmas parties??

OP posts:
Monopolyiscrap · 06/02/2022 18:14

Yes they said that Camilla would never be called Queen. I knew it was a lie.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 18:17

I never believed it in the first place! It was all part of making the marriage palatable to the public as Diana had only been dead about 6 or 7 years. The wife of the king is always the queen so I don't really think it's a big deal.

OP posts:
longwayoff · 06/02/2022 18:24

Patsy Kensit phoning the Daily Mirror to announce that Ally McCoist, footballer, had spent the night with her and he would be leaving wife and kids to shack up with her. He was out of there like a shot and back in the welcoming arms of his family before the next edition.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/02/2022 18:25

Wha... Princess Anne?? That's an image to conjure with....

TomPinch · 06/02/2022 18:26

I remember just after Hugh Grant got caught with Divine Brown someone worked out that "Hugh Grant" is an anagram of "Grunt Aghh".

DillDanding · 06/02/2022 18:26

As much as I think the whole royal family concept is bollocks, why shouldn’t Camilla be queen? I assume Kate will get that title too. If they’re the wives of the king, they get to be queen consort.

Monopolyiscrap · 06/02/2022 18:28

It is the lying about Camilla I cant stand.

I didn't know Anne had done that!!

@bendywendygivemeablast

A dead body found in Michael Barrymore's poolShock
That still haunts me. The poor guy was so badly injured the coroner said he would not have been able to walk. Barry more by this point in his career was drinking so badly he was pissed on stage all the time. I still can't stand the sight of him.
