Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

@HuntingoftheSnark

Matt Bianco being called a bunch of fucking wankers live on a call on Saturday Superstore. That might be earlier than the nineties.
I'm sure something similar happened to Five Star? 🤔

Ah, I miss the 90s. Sunday mornings were all about going out for a hungover cooked breakfast and poring over the News of The World Blush

Just googled Hollingsworth, CheeseMuffin, I'm delighted to report that he, at the age of 53, took up with a girl of 20. They were together for some years, they married and she filed for divorce 10 weeks later. Cost him his house and his dog. God pays debts without money.

Veh1970 · 06/02/2022 11:03

Ralph Fiennes leaving his wife for Francesca Annis, who was 18 years older than him.

MermaidEyes · 06/02/2022 11:04

Liam Gallagher getting multiple women pregnant very quickly

Always amazed me that even one woman was willing to sleep with him, never mind several

Jarvis Cocker gatecrashing the stage when I think it was Michael Jackson doing his set at the Brits.
Robbie Williams mooning on stage at his gig at Slade castle and calling his fans wankers or something before storming off.

longwayoff · 06/02/2022 11:28

Jarvis Cocker deserved a medal for showing his arse at MJs narcissistic posturing show. JCs greatest work of art.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 11:29

Speaking of MJ:
The first abuse allegations
Marrying Lisa-Marie Presley
Marrying Debbie something (mother of his kids)

I honestly can't remember the order in which all that happened!

The 'beef' between Oasis and Blur was fuelled by Damon Albarn having a fling with one of Liam Gallagher's girlfriends (possibly Lisa Moorish?).

The ladette culture was all about a slightly 'off-kilter' 90s version of female empowerment, with Zoe Ball and Sara Cox very much front and centre-stage as flag-bearers.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 12:03

I think Lisa Moorish had kids with Liam Gallagher and Pete Doherty? I was actually not sure if Pete was still with us but he is!

  • OMG - those were the days - when people could make jokes without being cancelled and we had our home grown celebs.

So much more boring now.*

I don’t know about that. It seemed to ruin his career for a while. He was one of those celebs who was in everything, and did loads of voiceovers but I don’t think his career ever recovered completely from that joke.

Ah, I miss the 90s. Sunday mornings were all about going out for a hungover cooked breakfast and poring over the News of The World

Croissants with a slab of chocolate prodded into the middle , coffee , NotW and The Sunday Sport

For shame Blush

Timeyime · 06/02/2022 13:59

@PollyCreo yy similar happened to five star. It went something like

  • my question is why are you so fucking shit?

I remember Denise van outen being in a group called 'those2girls' with someone else, but nobody ever mentions that.
Not a scandal, but I just don't understand why it was just forgotten about!
Robbie leaving take that and slagging them all off and becoming friends with oasis

Delline bass(model in every teen magazine) becoming an addict and burning her house down.

Preworkouttingle · 06/02/2022 14:26

I think Robbie followed Oasis around but they called him “the fat dancer from Take That” 😳

Lovecatsnonstopbutcanthaveany · 06/02/2022 14:27

@JaneJeffer you would be surprised what got through ..

I live in the UK since late 90s and my husband is Brit) and he is very good with music, has hundreds of albums however I’m always surprised like he says that he never heard of various bands who are also British and were very famous - probably only outside UK, he never heard of them until he met me!
Also the other day I was listening to some songs, again British tunes by ( Queen) he asked me who it is.
I said who it was and he said I never heard this song, this particular song was so huge in the 90s where I lived- was played in every club- however he never heard it in the UK.
I suppose we had a different market for music and different songs were popular there than here, I still think I know more music than he and he thinks he is a pro…LOL ( lightweight post)

Monopolyiscrap · 06/02/2022 14:29

Jarvis Cocker was great. He said he couldn't believe it when Michael Jackson appeared on stage surrounded by all these kids, in a performance that portrayed him as a virtual messiah. This was at the same time as the police were investigating him for child abuse.
He said he just felt he had to do something, but thought security would stop him before he ever got on the stage. He said when he got on the stage he didn't quite know what to do.

Pedallleur · 06/02/2022 14:46

John Leslie again who said he taught Catherine Zeta Jones everything when she was marrying Michael Douglas. Les Dennis made fun of himself quite brilliantly in Extras with Ricky Gervais with a script that made you laugh and cringe.

SamphiretheStickerist · 06/02/2022 14:51

@savvy7

And poor Michael Hutchence ... His life turned for the worse when he got mixed up with Paula Yates
Sadly that was a coincidence, one that only made his mental health issues worse. For more details see if you can find anything on taxi driver and Micheal Hutchencr brain injury - I'm on my phone or I'd add a link.

She was the last straw rather than the root cause!

savvy7 · 06/02/2022 15:00

I'm a huge fan - I know of the taxi driver altercation. However, he and Paula Yates were a toxic combination. His family even said this wouldn't have happened were he still with Kylie or Helena. Paula was very troubled.

SamphiretheStickerist · 06/02/2022 15:11

Oh, I think it might. As has been said by many who knew him really well, he had a fascination with suicide, his notebooks, lyrics, interviews are littered with suicide references.

She was the immediate cause of his choice, but not of his ideation.

longwayoff · 06/02/2022 15:25

Sad isn't it? 2 damaged people together rarely make a whole person of either. RIP both of them. And Peaches too.

CheeseMuffin · 06/02/2022 15:29

Apparently their daughter Tiger Lily now lives in Australia with her boyfriend and it yet to get a penny from Michael's estate.

Yeah and then he retaliated by sending Oasis a funeral wreath saying something like ‘just heard your new album. Condolences’. That was a great feud.

The Jarvis thing was hilarious because it was so overblown. The way the papers reported it made it sound like he’d pulled his pants down and done a full moon in front of crying children. He literally wagged his clothed arse around a bit. There was a girl in my class who was a huge MJ fan who was crying about it and saying how awful he was.

The MJ performance was so so ridiculous. I seem to remember there was a bit where he ‘blesses’ a rabbi while dressed as Jesus. Jarvis probably did him a favour by distracting everyone from the content of the performance.

JaneJeffer · 06/02/2022 16:35

@Lovecatsnonstopbutcanthaveany Grin

I don't think it's fair to blame Paula Yates for Michael Hutchence's demise. She also went on a downward spiral when they got together. Big mistake on both their parts.
