Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

@FlowerFlour

Brilliant thread! I remember so many of these.

Whatever happened to Nancy Dell'Olio? She was Sven Goran Ericsson's girlfriend when he cheated on her with Ulrika Johnson.

I last saw Nancy on an episode of Graham Norton where he asked her several times about what it was exactly that she did and she took offence and apparently never spoke to him again! She was always reported in the press as being a lawyer but I'm not sure where she practised, if at all.

Don't ask me how I have a memory for this kind of mindless sleb tattle - I've never even read OK Magazine!

Gail Porter having her naked bum projected onto the Houses of Parliament.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 05/02/2022 13:01

J-Lo and Puff Daddy getting arrested for fleeing some club after there was a shooting (I think) and then having to spend the night in jail. I remember that getting a loooot of column inches.

I always remember one report that said she was screaming from the cell that she needed her cuticle cream, for some reason that has always stuck in my head! 🤣

MermaidEyes · 05/02/2022 13:04

Well we all need our cuticle cream Hasselhoff nobody wants old lady hands 😁

@MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler

I feel awful about the jokes / responses to Monica / Bill now. Awful misogyny that I didn’t see or realise at the time (as it was absolutely fucking everywhere)
I agree. I was thinking just that recently. She was a young kid on work experience. He was gross. And his wife stood by him!!
CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 13:16

I feel like Bill was always Hillary's Achilles heel. Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld is an interesting exploration of what she might've achieved had she not married him.

The recent Impeachment drama, which was made with Monica's cooperation, really brought it all back. I knew she was treated badly but I didn't realise it was that badly.

I never knew about Prince Charles and the tampon! I'm 48 so can't believe that passed me by. I remember all the others mentioned. Off to Google.....

I read the first few words and thought 'must be too young' but I'm early 40s and I remember it so well. The tabloids were beside themselves with joy having such mortifying stuff to report on Charles. In went on for weeks.
Honeyroar · 05/02/2022 13:20
This is an interesting story about Hutchence allegedly re re cording th chorus of Elegantly Wasted to " Im better than Oasis'

tonedeaf.thebrag.com/inxs-elegantly-wasted-oasis-noel-gallagher-clapback/
That is interesting! He does sound like that’s what he’s singing!

I always find it amusing that Oasis burned themselves out not long after that and were very quickly has beens themselves. They didn’t last anywhere near as long as Inxs and weren’t anywhere near as good imo.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/02/2022 13:21

And video filmed by David Bowie's getting him off in the end!

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 05/02/2022 13:22

@Hasselhoffsheadband, Grin Grin

screaming from her cell that she needed cuticle cream. J-Lo truly is a high-maintenance queen

JudgeJ · 05/02/2022 13:28

@ruthypfdraper

Gillian Taylforth in the lay-by and the resulting court case. Poor Britney shaving her head.
Hadn't she been sewing a button onto his trousers and was biting the thread when the law found them? The jury didn'y buy that story either!
CharacterForming · 05/02/2022 13:28

Nancy del'Olio was amazing on Strictly. She really really couldn't dance.

@justasking111 Rock Hudson died in 1985.

@crazeekat The way the press treated Freddie was truly cruel. I can't get over the fact that they literally formed an encampment as near to Garden Lodge as they could get, so that he couldn't even have true peace and rest in those very last weeks as he was dying, when he'd come off everything but the palliative care. He did so much for AIDS as a cause and couldn't even die in peace.

JudgeJ · 05/02/2022 13:31

@Natsku

MP Neil Hamilton and the cash for questions things. I remember on Have I Got News For You they kept referring to him as 'disgraced former Tory MP Neil Hamilton" when his wife was on the programme and she kept asking them to stop calling him that.

Jeffery Archer and the perjury stuff.

And of course the Angus Deayton scandal, I was gutted about that because then he stopped being the host of HIGNFY

There are numerous stories about why Deayton really stopped hosting HIGNFY, closely connected to one of the team captains!

I'm intrigued @JudgeJ! Is he rumoured you have tried it on with one of their wives or something like that?

@Fizbosshoes

This isn't really a scandal but I had tickets to a take that tour, and the papers had pics of the costumes they had for Relight My Fire and one of them had chaps with his bum cheeks out. My mum was absolutely appalled that that was what we were going to see!! 🤣
Exactly the same here!

We had tickets and between the purchase and the actual show date, they changed their image.

Mum was horrified.

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 13:36

to have tried it on!!

@Chocaholic9 SHE wasn’t married. HE was.

I know her and stand by the comment. The tabloids ruined her life and that of her family.

Totally agree
x2boys · 05/02/2022 13:40

I think the Frank Bough scandal was even more shocking because he was an incredibly straight laced news reader
When the truth came out about Stuart Hall i found it even more shocking because he had been our local news reader for years and always came across as a pleasent fatherly type of man ( I realise this means nothing )

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 13:41

For those of you too young to remember, the 90s were the epitome of misogyny. 'Lad Culture' was celebrated across the media. Many young women competed to out-drink, out-smoke, out-football love and out-Lad the lads 'we're women, look how liberated and free we are, behaving just as obnoxiously as the lads'. This, obviously, was celebrated by the redtops as it was easy meat for them.There was an abundance of wank mags on general sale masquerading as everyday reading. Someone upthread mentioned safeguarding. As if. Not a thing until considerably later and too late for many. Hence the number of historic cases of abuse which are just the tip of the iceberg. The rise of the Internet put porn online, now people can have it streamed direct to them and the 'Lad Culture' has drifted away to be replaced by its opposite, a narrow-minded, fault finding, calling out of anyone on any perceived fault, the fault determined by whoever has the loudest voice and 'right' on their side. This, too, will pass. Who knows whats next?

I'll save my sympathy for his wife.

It was so destructive wasn’t it, yet when you were living it - certainly as a young teen - we didn’t see it for what it was. FHM had a Girlfriend of the Week colour where lads sent in photos of their girlfriends hoovering in their underwear or equally appalling set ups!! And this was all ‘empowering’, in the same way lip fillers and porn star outfits are now.
CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 13:51

The article I shared upthread about Denise Van Outen really typifies the way "ladettes" were written about in the 90s.
