Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

@JaneJeffer you’d rather blame a young woman with no ties than a married man in complete control of his own actions. Nice internalised misogyny from you.

Mothermorph · 05/02/2022 13:52

The Bill Wyman/Mandy Smith was awful. Basically grooming in plain sight. SadI didn't really recognise it at the time as I was a tween/young teen myself, but looking back its horrific and I can't understand why he wasn't called out on it, I'm pretty sure the wedding was covered by OK or hello magazine.
I've got a 15 year old daughter and the idea of a 40 something year old man grooming her and getting together as a couple, makes me sick.

How did you get that from what I said?

DZbornak · 05/02/2022 13:56

Also, Brad Pitt had a fling with a girl he met in Glasgow who took him to a party in Clydebank and to her mums in Maryhill for a bowl of soup!

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 14:14

Forgive my ignorance but what were American film stars doing wandering about in Glasgow. Charlie Sheen and Brad Pitt? It seems so out of place. Genuine question, not doubting posters but WHAT were they doing in Glasgow?

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 05/02/2022 14:16

They quite often film in Glasgow as the city's designed on a grid system and can imitate an American city.

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 14:17

Vile, wasn't it mothermorph. Followed by Mummy Smith and Bill's son. Just makes me want to vomit.

LetHimHaveIt · 05/02/2022 14:17

I mean - filming?

Fluffymule · 05/02/2022 14:20

I remember when Kay Burley had the exclusive interview with Rebecca Loos about her relationship with Beckham.

It was so distasteful. It was trailed massively and presented as if Sky had secured an exclusive on the level of an interview with a shamed ex Prime Minister or similar.

It was sensationalist scandal bait. In my opinion Kay came across really badly - she was clearly loving getting all the minute gossipy detail, simpering and giggling at times like a teenage bully might when egging others on.

I couldn't give two hoots for David Beckham's feelings either way but I did feel incredibly sorry for Victoria, and the children, that these two women were happy to encourage further focus and speculation about Victoria's 'faults' in the affair and her decisions to support her husband and family through the scandal.

Kay and Rebecca seemed happy to gloss over the fact that Rebecca was a consenting adult in a complicit deception with a married man. David was held up as the villain, but Victoria was equally vilified which was totally out of order.

I must admit it's influenced my opinion of Kay ever since and I've avoided watching her on screen.

Beamur · 05/02/2022 14:28

Not sure if it was the 90's but I was chatting with someone much younger than me who couldn't believe that Bruce Willis was married to Demi Moore

Gwenhwyfar · 05/02/2022 14:33

"He was gross. And his wife stood by him!!"

She also lied repeatedly on TV about it saying she was no 'Tammy Winette'. It worked out for her though as she almost became president.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/02/2022 14:34

Unless Ms Loos didn't have a TV or every read a newspaper she'd have known exactly who David Beckham is , he is one of the most famous recognisable men in the world and she'd have known his marital status

She cannot say "Oh I never knew he was married "
She could've said "Nah , not interested in married men, thanks all the same Dave"

So no , she's not entirely innocent but obviously he would shoulder more blame .. .

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 14:37

Thank you strychnine, I had no idea. I would have thought it was too cold and wet up there for coddled filmstars used to sunny LA to put up with for long. More power to Glasgow's elbow.

Carolbaskinstiger · 05/02/2022 14:46

Early naughtiest I think, but this thread reminded me about Kate Moss and Pete Doherty.

Carolbaskinstiger · 05/02/2022 14:47

Ffs *noughties

nobody said she was all to blame but she was not innocent as people are making out.

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 14:54

She was a young kid on work experience. He was gross

ffs 22-23 is NOT a young kid.

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 14:58

She wasn't a kid but she was young. And more importantly she was an intern and he was the most powerful man in the world! The power dynamics were off the scale.

@longwayoff

For those of you too young to remember, the 90s were the epitome of misogyny. 'Lad Culture' was celebrated across the media. Many young women competed to out-drink, out-smoke, out-football love and out-Lad the lads 'we're women, look how liberated and free we are, behaving just as obnoxiously as the lads'. This, obviously, was celebrated by the redtops as it was easy meat for them. There was an abundance of wank mags on general sale masquerading as everyday reading. Someone upthread mentioned safeguarding. As if. Not a thing until considerably later and too late for many. Hence the number of historic cases of abuse which are just the tip of the iceberg. The rise of the Internet put porn online, now people can have it streamed direct to them and the 'Lad Culture' has drifted away to be replaced by its opposite, a narrow-minded, fault finding, calling out of anyone on any perceived fault, the fault determined by whoever has the loudest voice and 'right' on their side. This, too, will pass. Who knows whats next?
Although everything about Lad culture is true. It is not true safeguarding did not exist. There was safeguarding training for anyone working with children. But it was also a time when plenty of people still started full-time work at 16 years old. So 16-year-olds were seen as adults, young adults, but adults.
DZbornak · 05/02/2022 15:30

@longwayoff So it seems Charlie Sheen was filming in Glasgow, Brad Pitt was in Glasgow for an interview and just a visit to the city in general. Promise I'm not talking nonsense, if you look it up there are a few news articles Smile

longwayoff · 05/02/2022 15:35

O thank you DZbornak will look it up.

CheeseMuffin · 05/02/2022 15:39

I'm just watching the Winter Olympics and am reminded of another scandal - Tonya Harding (allegedly?) hiring a couple of heavies to kneecap rival Nancy Kerrigan! In the end the Olympics was something of an anticlimax - Tonya forgot to lace up her boots and burst into tears on the ice, and Nancy "only" won the silver medal.

John Major and Edwina Curry

MermaidEyes · 05/02/2022 15:41

John Major and Edwina Curry

The hottest couple of the 90s 😁

VeganVampire · 05/02/2022 15:46

I don't think Julian Clary has been mentioned yet? His amazing 'I've just been fisting Norman Lamont' one liner took him off the tellybox for ages.
