Celeb scandals of the 90s

I'd forgotten all about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland until I read this piece about it. And then wondered how I could've forgotten as it was huge! And those were the days before social media!

I never realised that Michelle Pfeiffer played a conciliatory role or that the wedding cake apparently spoke to a tabloid reporter!

What are some scandals you remember from that period? (I'm housebound with Covid - humour me!)

She was fucking a married man. That's not what I'd called absolutely lovely.

Weirdly enough I think the email where he was supposed to have been complaining about a knighthood, seems to have made him more unpopular than having that affair (I'm aware there have been rumours of others - but this was extremely public) I feel like he got away fairly lightly with that when they were both equally responsible.

I watched the Michael Hutchence documentary where this was explained - heartbreaking. It also made me hate Noel Gallagher after his comments at the Brits. That will stay with me.

In fairness to David B, he didn't hawk to story of his infidelity to the tabloids for cash, that is scummy.

Was it poor Leslie Ash who 'fell out of bed' in a sex session and ended up in hospital?

I think it's safe to say he was more responsible as a) he was married, and b) he was her employer. I don't really accept that Rebecca Loos was 'lovely' though, and I distinctly remember an interview where she'd confessed to be so turned-on by one of his texts (really?) that she'd had to have a quick wank in the loo. Nice. A few years later she was wanking pigs on reality tv and married to a Belgian woman who was a psychologist. Or something.

Charlie Sheen partying and doing drugs with a prostitute in Easterhouse in Glasgow! The drugs and prostitute were less of a scandal than the fact that he was in Easterhouse!!

Well, no. Monica Lewinsky was single so cheating on nobody. Really not the same as Bill Clinton (although I suspect the Clinton marriage may have been one of convenience at the time anyway). Plus, as mentioned he was her boss and she was an intern with no job security.

MP Neil Hamilton and the cash for questions things. I remember on Have I Got News For You they kept referring to him as 'disgraced former Tory MP Neil Hamilton" when his wife was on the programme and she kept asking them to stop calling him that.

Didnt Christine Hamilton become famous and appear on I'm a celeb and other programmes for being the wife of a disgraced MP, though? I'm pretty sure if he hadn't done anything dodgy no one would have remembered either of them.

The little Britain sketch of the disgraced MP outside his country house was very topical at the time it first came out.

Watch the clip with Louis Theroux where she seems to be propositioning him to join her and her husband. Unfortunately, Hamilton was a member of the Welsh Assembly until the last election.

Was Sophie caught out by the fake sheikh before or after she married Prince Edward? You'd think someone with her years of experience in PR would be a little more savvy.

What I remember best about that was Sophie reportedly saying Cherie Blair was "horrid horrid horrid". Clearly so horrid she had to say it three times!

Wasn't it like a prayer? I remember being at a sleepover when I was about 14 and playing it backwards and being so scared (I don't think it said anything satanic but a vinyl record played backwards sounds Very creepy and strange)

Agree, how such a random act caused so much heartbreak. I don't like Noel Gallagher anyway, but what he did was unforgivable.

Madonna definitely went through a super scandalous period in her mid-30s when she released Erotica and her Sex book. I think it was one of those books that everyone talked about but very few people actually read!

A few years later that was all forgotten when she played Evita, had her daughter and was suddenly an Earth mother type. Followed shortly by marriage to Guy Ritchie and the adoption of a Lady of the Manor persona and accent.

Ah Madge, at least she's never dull!

There was a lot of stuff going on at the time that didn't make the headlines such as a lot of the Britpop stars were very heavily into hard drugs (heroin, crack) it wasn't by all accounts just lager and fags
Another drug one was danniell a Westbrook- very sad as she seemed to sort herself out in the 00s - I read her first. Auto biography on maternity leave in 2007 which ended really positively but she seems to be in a bad place again

Didn’t Mick Hucknall also date Martine McCutcheon? Grin. He was also one of those men who claimed to have ‘bedded over a thousand women’, which seemed to be a thing in the 90s.
