Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

Disclaimer: I have a phobia of worms and similar creatures, so am freaking out to a ridiculous degree!

Is this a worm? Fish don't have sinews or ligaments, do they? It came out all in one piece and is quite tough and shiny

I am NEVER eating fish again

Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

Basa is a shit commercially farmed fish. There is a reason it's cheap.

starray · 04/02/2022 02:16

@whydiditalkaboutbruno

Ok I’m now vegan after reading this thread
Me too!! How about salmon? Is that 'safer' than other kinds of fish? Is that why sashimi is made from tuna and salmon? Because it is worm-free?
itsanothernamechangeforme · 04/02/2022 02:21

I'm not so sure freezing kills them, after working in a food outlet and seeing the white fish fillets defrost and the worms come to life and start wriggling around Blush

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2022 02:25

I once found a worm in my Nobel Prize

Olinguito · 04/02/2022 02:25

I found a worm in an egg - put me right off.

FedUpOfLighteningCrotch · 04/02/2022 02:52

So, I’ve just learnt from this thread that fish is quite likely to have worms, lol. If I hadn’t read the comments I would have told OP this isn’t a worm at all, doesn’t look remotely like a worm and is in fact a string of fat as I see it quite a lot when I eat fish.

I really wish I could say I pick them out. Envy

@sadpapercourtesan

With the greatest of respect, could the delegation of vegan evangelists please give it a rest? It's very commendable, but not at all what the thread is about.
^ wish the carnivores would keep it in mind too (but they don’t lol) and yes I eat meat before anyone decides to have a pop.

Fish- with a side of worms - yum, you’ve just put me off for life. Envy

Because dead worms taste nicer? 🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣
FoggySpecs · 04/02/2022 04:25

I remember buying cod in Waitrose once and it was teeming with worms, I've never liked fish and it was the final straw. My brother told me some fairly vile things about fish farming and farmed prawns particularly, he is massively into fishing and very knowledgeable.

FoggySpecs · 04/02/2022 04:30

I love red meat and am massively interested in animal welfare and organic farming. Actually probably the most ethically farmed meat tends to be red meat.

Chickens are also iffy in terms of mass farming and very prone to all sorts of hideous issues. Always find out where your food is sourced and how the animal lived.

Angrymum22 · 04/02/2022 04:47

I no longer buy salads with black olives in after buying a salad box from our local sandwich shop. I happened to notice one of the black olives making its way across the top of the salad just before I ate my first mouthful.
It was a black beetle perfectly camouflaged as a black olive. I am beetle-averse ( wouldn’t go as far as phobic but certainly can do a bit of an arm flayling dance if one lands on me) so I now add my own black olives to salad.

How surely an egg is sealed by definition.

Angelbaby1985 · 04/02/2022 06:16

I when you said basa yeah be worms basa is also known as the pangasia cat fish imported crap that's fed on crap in asia

Badnightguaranteed · 04/02/2022 06:34

Basa is always full of these . Totally put me off fish forever when I found a basa fillet riddled with them.

Marmelace · 04/02/2022 06:40

@practicallyperfectwithprosecco

Erm I'm not sure lettuce is much better - huge slug hiding among the leaves the other day 🤢
I have a picture of a slug shivering with sad eyes in my head now 🙂

I hope you just DEALT WITH IT!
Fridafever · 04/02/2022 06:49

I found an amazing caterpillar in my bag of spinach yesterday - really lovely bright green.

I eat meat (only organic) and fish (only wild). I’d still be a bit grossed out by finding a parasitic worm in my food, I’m not sure it’s fair to call that irrational.

whymewhyme · 04/02/2022 06:51

Am i the only person who didn't know fish had worms?! Grose!

toomuchlaundry · 04/02/2022 06:54

@whymewhyme I didn’t either

Snails and other inverts also reptiles can get worms think nearly everything can get worms
loopycurtains · 04/02/2022 07:05

@UnbelievableAlien

Yeah it’s a pretty common thing in most animals is to have a worm burden. I’m so happy to not eat anything that was alive! Can’t understand it really if you are eating animals bodies and being worried about a tiny worm…
So you don't eat plant-based foods either then? Because they were once alive...
elbea · 04/02/2022 08:01

@bumblefeline there isn’t pus in milk, any cows with mastitis have their milk dumped.

PossiblyDreaming · 04/02/2022 08:13

@britneyisfree it sounds like you’ve been watching videos about mass cattle farming in places like the US and China. Welfare standards are far, far higher here and there really isn’t puss in milk.

ThoseFestiveLights · 04/02/2022 08:27

One crawled out of my monkfish once and I did not like it!

I’ve largely stuck to frozen fish now as the live worms can make you a bit sick but freezing kills them.
