Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

Disclaimer: I have a phobia of worms and similar creatures, so am freaking out to a ridiculous degree!

Is this a worm? Fish don't have sinews or ligaments, do they? It came out all in one piece and is quite tough and shiny

I am NEVER eating fish again

Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

I had a worm in my fish for the first time last year. Googled it and was shocked. Couldn’t touch fish for a while but do now.
Sadly it happens. Still gross.

Cazziebo · 03/02/2022 22:28

@NutCheeseBag

I’ve found worms in fish several times. It’s unpleasant, but at least you don’t break your teeth on them like you do with the lead shot in game.
This comment wins Mumsnet as the most optimistic and common sense response of the day!

Having just wandered across from the thread where the mum referred to a penis as a worm I was most alarmed at this thread title, I'm relieved it may actually be a real worm in your dinner, it could been worse.

Imnoteatingthat · 03/02/2022 22:30

I’m surprised you’ve never seen them before, especially if you cook fish regularly. Seeing a live one is a bit of a surprise but it’s like finding maggots in apples, bugs on salad etc. It happens.

userxx · 03/02/2022 22:30

@Scoot75

I eat a plant-based diet these days. I've seen too many documentaries on what's in our food. I stopped drinking milk when I discovered it was full of puss. Then a while later after the horsemeat scandal, I stopped eating meat.

I like to eat clean food and feel so much better for it.

Clean and worm free.

UnbelievableAlien · 03/02/2022 22:31

Yeah it’s a pretty common thing in most animals is to have a worm burden.
I’m so happy to not eat anything that was alive!
Can’t understand it really if you are eating animals bodies and being worried about a tiny worm…

With the greatest of respect, could the delegation of vegan evangelists please give it a rest? It's very commendable, but not at all what the thread is about.

@sadpapercourtesan I never heard of fish works either!!! But I just googled for you and your picture looks just like the pictures I found of “cod worms”. (Plus there was an angry shopper at a different supermarket who had the same experience as you.)

Apparently cooking or freezing kikls the worms and renders them harmless but still not loving this eh.

Well I learn something new on Mumsnet every day!

bumblefeline · 03/02/2022 22:35

Pus in milk?

Wish I hadn't read this thread.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 03/02/2022 22:38

Erm I'm not sure lettuce is much better - huge slug hiding among the leaves the other day 🤢

DrNo007 · 03/02/2022 22:39

Yes plenty of worms in cod too. It is gross but at least they are dead when you eat them 😳

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/02/2022 22:40
@Luredbyapomegranate farmed fish has fleas instead. I think I’d prefer the worms.
Well that’s true. I’m not sure the OP would though Grin

EXACTLY Not to mention weevils in rice And the mice that die during the harvest.

At least the 🪱 and 🐠 get to hang out ❤️ for a bit

And that is why sushi is made from flash-frozen fish ('sushi grade')

If it was just plain old raw, it would be much too wormy.

LovejoysVase · 03/02/2022 22:48

Ex worked briefly at a smokehouse, after brining cod or haddock loads of worms would wriggle out 🤢

Im2022 · 03/02/2022 22:50

Watch out OP. People will soon start asking you to use the proper scientific name for the worm…

Salome61 · 03/02/2022 23:12

Bjork apparently worked at a fish factory and spoke about the worms.

Lernaeocera branchialis would be a bit of a mouthful though!

I really wish I hadn’t read this thread. I had never heard of cod worms!

FireMeetGasoline · 03/02/2022 23:19

Fish do carry parasites, including worms. Tbf, it looks more like cartilage, so you can probably stop sweating.

However:

'could the delegation of vegan evangelists please give it a rest?'

Why do you think it is evangelistic for someone to point out you are eating one animal, and are repulsed by another? It isn't evangelistic at all. It is stating a fact.

It's like someone eating a KFC family bucket and finding a chicken's foot in there. Person goes berserk and is dismayed.

You are eating a dead animal, with that comes parasites and the odd foot that gets through QC. Not evangelistic, just realist.

Dogmum40 · 03/02/2022 23:20

Cheese has mites! Not remotely helpful regarding your fish worms but thought you should know! I like to think they add to the taste! Grin

I was eating some really delicious fish once in a restaurant in Switzerland...stopped enjoying it as much when I saw something distinctly worm-like and then couldn't finish it.
