Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

sadpapercourtesan · 03/02/2022 22:10

Disclaimer: I have a phobia of worms and similar creatures, so am freaking out to a ridiculous degree!

Is this a worm? Fish don't have sinews or ligaments, do they? It came out all in one piece and is quite tough and shiny

I am NEVER eating fish again

Is this a worm in my fish fillet?

@harrylover

I once had formal at trinity (cam) and was served fish fillet with worms in it. Send it back, get a fresh fillet, and DEAL WITH IT!!!
Even shoehorns Oxbridge reference into convo about fish worms.

I had a worm in a lovely battered piece of cod years ago.

I went and spoke to a fishmonger about it, and he confirmed that it's fairly common.

foxgoosefinch · 03/02/2022 23:49

Yeah it's quite common in white fish. Normally you don't even notice because you eat them cooked....

Eh?

@FireMeetGasoline

Fish do carry parasites, including worms. Tbf, it looks more like cartilage, so you can probably stop sweating.

However:

'could the delegation of vegan evangelists please give it a rest?'

Why do you think it is evangelistic for someone to point out you are eating one animal, and are repulsed by another? It isn't evangelistic at all. It is stating a fact.

It's like someone eating a KFC family bucket and finding a chicken's foot in there. Person goes berserk and is dismayed.

You are eating a dead animal, with that comes parasites and the odd foot that gets through QC. Not evangelistic, just realist.

OP has stated more than once that she has a worm phobia, so asking why she has a problem eating a worm is ridiculous really. And the evangelism is more the 'this is why I eat plant based' type comments
tkwal · 04/02/2022 00:06

Worms are common in fish especially , as someone mentioned, bottom feeders like basa/catfish but also swordfish, tuna, dogfish. Fish from deep cold seas tend to be "cleaner" in this respect

MrHavelIsHot · 04/02/2022 00:12

There’s was the bloke who was appalled at finding a nipple on his McDonald’s bacon roll. I mean, you’re eating a pig and they have nipples soooo.....
Worms are really common in fish so anyone that eats fish has probably eaten a fair few.

whydiditalkaboutbruno · 04/02/2022 00:16

Ok I’m now vegan after reading this thread

This is the most impressive shoehorning of a needless Oxbridge reference I've ever seen on Mumsnet!

@AnotherMansCause

Cows are terrible for picking up worms & other parasites, plus other infections. As are many pastured animals TBH. Partly why it’s so common for them to be constantly on antibiotics etc. Otherwise they grow really slowly. Cows are naturally scraggy thin things with very little meat on them.
Cows are not constantly on antibiotics
TheElderleyBrothers · 04/02/2022 00:20

If it is hard it is far more likely to be the remnants of some packaging material. Fish is cleaned and frozen at the site of capture and then transported. It can be then defrosted, processed and frozen again. Lots of opportunity for bits of rogue packaging. It does not look like a worm.

PaulaTrilloe · 04/02/2022 00:25

Looks like a Nematode worm. If you cooked it it won't affect you

Scoot75 · 04/02/2022 00:26

LOL at not wanting to eat worms and horsemeat being described as 'vegan evangelism' Grin.

Scoot75 · 04/02/2022 00:28

Oh, and also not wanting to drink pus.

toomuchlaundry · 04/02/2022 00:40

Even if you only eat fruit and veg it is likely that you may find some sort of creature in some of your food. And I’m sure something has probably crawled over it and pooed on it.

britneyisfree · 04/02/2022 00:42

@Sugarplumfairy65

Im not vegan but they deffo are. Gotta buy organic if you want to avoid. Especially dairy products, some of the stuff that is in it 😬

Scoot75 · 04/02/2022 00:52

@toomuchlaundry that's why they recommend washing all your fruit and veg before you eat it. You can easily wash off a few bugs, etc but I don't think you can rinse the pus out of milk, for instance.

Yes, I always wash it, including the stuff that says washed and ready to eat. I tend to chop up fruit too so won’t have eaten any worms.
If you eat other animals, I don’t really see why you would be bothered with a worm or a nipple.

FireMeetGasoline · 04/02/2022 01:08

@DickMabutt73962 of course she does. She's that phobic that she is able to pull said worm from her fish, take a picture and then post it on MN. I'm really not making fun of phobias, but do you know how ridiculous you sound? Not liking something is not equal to being terrified and disabled by something.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 04/02/2022 01:09

@britneyisfree.
You're talking bollocks. Have you ever set foot on a dairy farm? I was brought up on one!

BashfulClam · 04/02/2022 01:13

@hattylicer did you miss where the OP says she has a worm Phobia? Therefore just ‘DEAL WITH IT’ isn’t easy. Phobia’s are not just being a bit disgusted, I also have a worm phobia and would have thrown my plate and been sick.

Scoot75 · 04/02/2022 01:15

If you have a worm phobia, then don't eat food with worms in it. Quite simple really.

LemonMuffins · 04/02/2022 01:25

I'm veggie these days but had no idea fish worms were a thing. Served the rest of the household haddock this evening - I don't think I'll be mentioning this to them...

Fruit and veg are no safer. I once ate a bunch of larvae filled cherries. After the third or fourth muddy tasting one, I bit one in half and got a fright Envy. Haven't eaten one since. Also found live maggot thingos inside an aubergine SadEnvy

Nature is gross.

@Sugarplumfairy65

Yes but we aren't talking about nice family run dairy farms. We are talking about mega farms with shitloads of cows.
