Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

People need to be needed

You're so wrong with that. My dog gives so much to my life, yet asks for very little in return.

I think there was an increase in dog ownership over lockdowns. Lots of PP WFH thought let's get a puppy or a dog..!... and it became a bit much with poorly trained dogs. And barking dogs - as new owners didn't think it through so much.

Lockdown was awful as I appreciate people tried to find a way through it ... but.,,
WFH is temporary and dogs are like toddlers they need discipline love and attention and structure with good responsible owners.

I don't blame the dogs but "he's just being friendly " is not helpful when I'm knocked over, off my walking sticks. Or they knock one of my sticks from the bottom.

Some dog owners need to get better at recall or put their dogs on leads when out!
So maybe I don't love an "over-friendly dog" !! It's not friendly when it hurts you. I'd also like to not have dog noses pushing into my legs and crotch from dogs on (or off) leads. Back off!!! I can't push dog away as I'm leaning in my sticks to stay upright. It's not nice for me.

So whilst I don't like (not hate) untrained dogs I appreciate good boys and good girls... and owners who keep dogs by their side when near children, older or disabled people who might find the unfettered doggie "love" towards strangers a bit much! GrinConfused

I saw a dog pee on the floor of a pub...the manager asked the owner to leave. Other customers were up in arms that they were asked to leave. I tell you now if a toddler had peed on the floor, no one would have piped up to defend them.

i guess if you're not an animal person, you just don't understand. A dog enhances my life far more than any human does.

I'm an animal lover
But I don't like being knocked over and pushed around by dogs - as they have no doggie boundaries!

So I'm not saying your DDog is mean or in anyway not a lovely friend and companion. I bet you adore them & they are well loved. It's just that some of us aren't as keen on dogs coming bounding up to us! They can't help it. But the owner can.

I completely agree with you. I'm in no way defending owners who can't or won't train their animals. I was responding to those who can't understand the attraction of owning a dog.

Badly behaved dogs are always the fault of their human.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 18/01/2022 16:27

Yeah - we know guide dogs can 'do their business on command, in designated places'.

All dogs should.

It's just that lazy owners can't be bothered and think it's acceptable to foul and spoil public places for everyone. Makes me shudder when I think of barefoot children running through puddles of pee on the beach and worse....

Dogs should foul their owner's property, not public places where it's never cleaned up properly. It always leaves a smear/trace. And don't get me started with trails of pee full width of the pavement. It's just lovely trying to negotiate disgusting dog waste with a pushchair which then stands in the house.

My mum never took our dog out for exercise until it had 'emptied' itself because she trained it to go on command.

Worse like seagull crap, rotting seaweed, dead fish and crabs, pollution, tar, I could go on. Pee doesn't puddle on sand.

My (frankly weird) dog poos at home. I agree that people who don't pick up dog poo are arseholes.

Yes, it's humans that should be hated, rather than dogs.

You'll be fine, dogs are very discerning

Are they fuck, they eat their own puke.

Mine doesn't eat his own puke.

Yanbu. I've been attacked by dogs as a child and adult so not a fan at all. Irresponsible dog owners are the worst.

Some of these posts completely prove your point op.

It is okay to not like dogs. People are ridiculous!

Huntswomanonthemove · 18/01/2022 19:29

Of course it's okay to not like dogs, although much of what isn't liked is the fault of people, not dogs.

TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 18/01/2022 20:34

Here's another good reason not to like dogs: they have a huge carbon footprint.

isittheholidaysyet · 18/01/2022 20:52

I wonder sometimes if people who don't like dogs change their minds if they need an assistance dog. If you became blind, would you give a guide dog a go?

I really can't imagine it. Wouldn't be fair to the dog to live with someone who spends their whole time trying to stop herself from kicking it. I also couldn't be arsed to walk feed or clean up after it.
I think if I was dealing with a new disability, having to have to deal with a dog would send me over the edge.

You do understand that is not a reasonable attitude to have don't you? You have to stop yourself kicking dogs? Christ. I agree people don't need to like dogs, but that's a step too far

Yes, it's humans that should be hated, rather than dogs.

I generally really like humans. Most people I know these days have dogs, I put up with the dogs because I like the humans.

Even people whose stupid dogs have jumped up at me or stolen my food are generally really nice to chat to, once we've got over the problem of the behaviour of their stupid animal.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 18/01/2022 21:00

I don’t like dogs. No particularly bad experiences or anything, I just don’t like them. They smell and slobber and I could happily go the rest of my life without ever having to see another dog.

Contrary to the beliefs of most rabid dog lovers (see what I did there Wink) that doesn’t actually mean I wish pain and suffering upon the canines of the world.

Comedycook · 18/01/2022 21:01

I genuinely don't understand why so many people are so obsessed with them and the weirdest thing for me is that people spends thousands on buying them. You couldn't pay me to look after one. I can't imagine paying money for something which is going to shit in the street and I'm going to have to clear it up!

isittheholidaysyet · 18/01/2022 21:01

Yes I know it's totally unreasonable. As a human I can override my feelings and not do the thing I really want to do. I don't know where the feeling comes from, but it is a very strong urge.
I have never hurt an animal in my life, even the dog who bit me. However I don't think I could cope living with one.
