Been watching and listening to a lot of George on Spotify and YouTube lately. Beautiful voice, still miss him! Anyone else?

I saw him live at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and he was absolutely incredible singing Somebody to Love. He was the only guy who could have replaced Freddie as lead singer. I treasure that memory and his beautiful lyrics bring me to tears, especially Praying for Time. I feel we have all been deprived of the beautiful songs he would have gone on to write.

Not acoustic - still fabulous

Iforangeswerenttheonlyfruit · 02/01/2022 23:08

Listening to the Countdown now, thanks for the tip.

Went to see him in concert many years ago, we had terrible seats, right at the top of the arena, but were looking forward to him anyway. An arena attendant took us to one side on our way to our seats and asked us if we’d like to move to the front. Apparently he always saved a few seats and plucks a few random lucky people to upgrade, what a lovely surprise 🥰

What an amazingly talented man. Must have been amazing to see him live. It's mostly the later stuff I listen to.. Flawless is my go to cheer up song! Such smoooth moves in the video.

My favourite is one that rarely gets mentioned. It was at Christmas 2010. I think it's it's called I Dreamed of Christmas. Just gorgeous.

It’s called December song? If I’ve got the right one? It’s gorgeous ❤️
TooBigForMyBoots · 02/01/2022 23:17

I loved him.

When I was 10, I fell in love with George Michael and Wham but mostly GM. He was beautiful, aspirational, relateableConfused and had the most gorgeous teeth I had ever seen.Glitterball

My dad took me to buy a poster of him in a white linen suit, with a pink scarf(?), sitting on the ground.😍 When we got home, dad took the picture of "Christ In A Crown of Thorns" off my bedroom wall and helped me put my first ever, poster up on my wall.Xmas Grin

George Michael was a special person with huge talent.❤

It is December Song as a pp said. Last Christmas is Iconic and a perfect pop record but December Song is the most heartbreakingly beautiful Christmas song. Look it up on YouTube. I also love his live version of Feeling Good from the Sinfonica album as an outstanding version you don't hear often enough.

I hope his family and friends take comfort from the fact that he is still much missed and loved and that his music continues to make people happy.

The Radio 2 programmes can be downloaded from BBC Sounds, if anyone wants to keep them beyond the 28 days to listen to.

Puffinhead · 02/01/2022 23:31

Definitely. I’m late 40s so grew up listening to him. My teen DC always notice I have a tear in my eye when his music is played; his is the one celebrity death that always gets to me. He was so young.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 02/01/2022 23:36

He was a complicated man wasn't he with issues but the lovely thing about him is as others have said all of the stories of his generosity that came out when he died. I remember as a child Capital Radio always did a Christmas appeal called Help a London Child. The DJ this year said that they had received a sizable donation and had been sworn to secrecy but she wanted everyone to know it was George Michael! Don't know if she got in trouble, hope she didn't even though she did break confidentiality!

Beautiful, wonderful George, so missed, I just hope he knew how much he was loved 🥰

Hersetta427 · 03/01/2022 09:53

If anyone wants a sob then listen to James Corden's tribute to George on the Late Late Show after news of his death. Still makes me cry even though I have seen it a dozen times.

A link for those who want to watch it.

This is his Desert Island Discs - such a profound and deeply emotional man.

OP thank you so much for this thread remembering Georgie .I have found my tribe in this thread ! I so loved , still love George Michael and his music and Wham too.It was the first ‘ music cassette’ I bought growing upSmile. A big regret is not seeing him perform live. What a silky and mesmerising voice ! He was special and his songwriting was deeply heartfelt, I feel. He went too early , lovely man.I was very very upset and shocked when he passed away so unexpectedly and suddenly. He seemed to be a very caring and sensitive soul but still able to laugh at himself . He deserved to have a contended life with someone who was kind to him and cared for him deeply . I feel he may have been sad inside at people using him and being with him only for the money and the lifestyle . Thanks to whoever posted the link to the Radio2 playlist- listening to it now , his voice is making me tear up.He was such a beautiful looking man too !

lollipoprainbow · 03/01/2022 11:12

Lovely unassuming man, quietly gave to charity but didn't make a big thing of it. Loved from my wham days in the 80's to his 90's ballards. He died a few days before my sister and I still can't believe they've gone.

TickleMyFanny · 03/01/2022 11:26

Me, DD 25 and DS 20 all belt out wham rap and young guns occasionally. I played them so much in the car when they were young! Ahh we all still love it - they even say they will teach them to their kids so we can all sing together Grin

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 03/01/2022 12:07

So missed

JaneJeffer · 03/01/2022 12:17

Always will be missed. I watched Last Christmas last week and even though it's a daft story I loved the soundtrack.

Georgeskitchen · 03/01/2022 12:29

Hugely talented man and quietly, without shouting about it, very generous with his money. Pretty sure he would have been Sir George Michael if he was still with us ❤

PolaDeVeboise · 03/01/2022 12:40

Was in the kitchen on NY day prepping dinner and my Uncle (67) and Nephew (29) came in and we were all singing along with Careless Whisper when it came on - I was so touched they love a bit of him too (I am, what you may call, a super fan).

sazza76 · 03/01/2022 18:34

@FitAt50

My inlaws live next door to the house he died in, said he was a really lovely man. Every Christmas he would give them a big hamper to apologise for his fans hanging about outside etc. On the anniversary of his death there are dozens of flowers and candles left outside the house. A family moved in a couple of years ago but the house was empty for a few years apart from the housekeeper.
Your in-laws live in such a beautiful place, it’s not too far from where I live and I could always see why George Michael loved it there. It can’t have been easy for them with a constant stream of fans. Georges old house is stunning, I saw the estate agent photos of the inside, its good that a family are living there.
PhoboPhobia · 03/01/2022 18:46

I've just finished reading Andrew Ridgley's book so have been googling lots of clips and listening a lot.

There's a bit in the book about when they filmed the video for Last Christmas - apparently George was very self conscious about his looks back then and would make them re shoot things - one shot AR says George was trying to be all mean and moody and ended up looking as though he had taken a snowball to the knackers. I spotted it in the video and now can't unsee it!

I was a massive Wham! fan and loved almost every song that GM ever sang. Listen Without Prejudice is possibly my favourite album of all time.

My understanding was that he wasn’t eligable for any of the Queens honours due to his convictions. Having gone through the nomination process for someone it’s such an archaic system that prevents a lot of good people from being recognised. He was always open about his drug addiction and cottaging activities, I expect there are many recipients who aren’t whiter than white but they hide their behaviour. He was a wonderful man who gave us the most beautiful music from his troubled soul.
