I've just discovered Sherry...

...after having to buy a bottle for a recipe I'm making.

I've only ever seen it being drank by Emily Bishop on Coronation Street years ago. I poured myself a small glass to try, and it's bloody lovely.

Does anyone else like a Sherry? This is a basic Tesco one, I'm guessing the more expensive ones are even nicer?

I love cream Sherry!

toomuchlaundry · 30/12/2021 18:33

I would put a dry sherry in the fridge. A Bristol Cream type sherry would be kept in a cupboard. When I was younger my dad always had a decanter of sherry on the sideboard. I was allowed a small glass at Christmas

angorarabbit · 30/12/2021 18:34

When my children were little they always used to leave a glass of sherry for Father Christmas....I remember helping out by filling their stockings.......and drinking his sherry!

dottiedodah · 30/12/2021 18:35

Yep! Amontillado is gorgeous! Although ATM I am about to crack open a bottle of good old Harveys Bristol cream . Reminds me of my Nan when we would have a glass with our Christmas cake.

plinkplinkfizzer · 30/12/2021 18:41

I love a Sherry while watching Carols from kings while preparing veg ,so Christmasy !

Omicrone · 30/12/2021 18:41

Sherry is delicious! I only really like the dark sweet type though, not the paler one?

userisi2 · 30/12/2021 18:44

Bloody love sherry, but needs to be sweet like Harvey's.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 18:45

I too started to appreciate Sherry in Spain. Crept up on me over the years. I like it very cold and sometimes (heresy for some but not all) I water it down with ice. Min fact going to Spanish restaurant for lunch tomorrow and may just partake.

ThedaBara · 30/12/2021 18:46

Love sherry! Spanish in-laws introduced me to it many years ago. We always have it fridge cold in the summer and roo temp in winter. Chilling it takes the edge off the very sweet ones. Amontillado is my fave, proper middle ground. Discovered that I like Port this winter too, after buying some for a recipe

Firstshoes · 30/12/2021 18:49

Harvey's is my absolute favourite sherry. Do not put in fridge. I only have it at Christmas though

Philandbill · 30/12/2021 18:50

There is a chain of tapas restaurants that do a flight of sherry, three glasses of a particular type/dryness. Absolutely lovely. Grin

ditalini · 30/12/2021 18:51

It reminds me of my gran. You knew you had "come of age" when you were offered a sherry before dinner.

Always Tio Pepe and I still have a fondness for a dry sherry of a Sunday afternoon.

crankysaurus · 30/12/2021 18:53

A glass of chilled white port before dinner is also rather nice.

BrennieGirl · 30/12/2021 18:55

I love Harveys. I serve at room temperature with ice ( learned this way at a tour of the Harvey's factory in Bristol years ago).

rc22 · 30/12/2021 18:55

I've got a glass of Croft Original on the go as I type. Perfect festive pre dinner drink.
My dad likes the posher, drier sherries but I only drink the sweeter stuff!!
I'm only in my early 40s . I've got DH (usually a lager drinker into it too!!)

AlbertBridge · 30/12/2021 18:55

Bloody LOVE sherry. I had 4 shots of it on Xmas day morning to get festive and very nearly puked. It's stronger than you think...

AdaColeman · 30/12/2021 19:02

I love a sherry, but then I’m an old lady, so liking sherry is compulsory! Xmas Wink

Riapia · 30/12/2021 19:18

Try Tio Pepe, chilled, it’s delicious, but very moreish 😉.
Wonderful with cold roast beef and a good strong cheese.

The reason sherry is looked down on, is being offered a cheap one from a bottle that was opened at least 15 years ago.

1forAll74 · 30/12/2021 19:18

i like sherry, but not had any for years, My grandparents always had some sherry and port in the house when they were alive. I remember visiting them on my birthday, when I was 21, they gave me some sherry, and that was the first alcohol I had ever drunk in my life at that time.My parents never had any alcohol in the house at home.

I have bought a bottle now and then over the years, but now this has reminded me how much I liked the sherry, and might get some this week,, I am 79 now,and it didn't turn into an old lady drink for me , I quite like martini type drinks now.

VitalsStable · 30/12/2021 19:25

QC, none of the Pedro shite. Needs to coats your teeth gums and throat in the way down to a delicious tummy warming x

absolutelynotfabulous · 30/12/2021 19:27

Sherry has always been a favourite tipple of mine.i discovered it age 12 (my parents were liberal about booze). Nothing quite so Christmassy as a schooner of sherry, sweeter the better, and a large cigar at Christmas.

Gives me the munchies something terrible though. Grin

MamaWeasel · 30/12/2021 19:28

I love sherry and port, both at room temperature.

Robin233 · 30/12/2021 19:30

Love sherry and port. Not sure how it started. Maybe with cooking / needed with for recipe
But sherry was given out as the quests entered the reception at weddings - for free.
In time I found I was really enjoying them.
I got a bottle of port and sherry for Christmas.

Riverlee · 30/12/2021 19:31

Yes, I quite like a sherry also.

I think it’s due a revival, like gin has in recent years.

Pegasussnail · 30/12/2021 19:31

I don't like sherry but I love a port Xmas Smile
