I've just discovered Sherry...

...after having to buy a bottle for a recipe I'm making.

I've only ever seen it being drank by Emily Bishop on Coronation Street years ago. I poured myself a small glass to try, and it's bloody lovely.

Does anyone else like a Sherry? This is a basic Tesco one, I'm guessing the more expensive ones are even nicer?

Croft original is much nicer than Harvey's.

Deathraystare · 31/12/2021 13:28

I hardly ever drink it
Bloody lovely in a trifle! I prefer a dryer
One though am quite OK with the sweet stuff.

No Sherry glasses in the charity shop today, but I’m always in there for books and the 2 lovely women that work in there regularly have said they’ll keep hold of any that come in Grin (and one of them said “oooh I haven’t had a Sherry in ages, I might get a bottle on the way home”).

We have just completed on a flat in Chipiona.
While we were there in October, we visited a couple of sherry producers in the next town over.
I managed to get a bottle of la gitana in Tesco last week

Here’s some info on different types of sherry @Riverlee

When I was little and I had been out on a walk in freezing weather with my mum and the dog; to warm me up on our return Nana would give me a thimble full of sherry with hot water and sugar. Still love a Bristol Cream, so warming/soothing and am enjoying the bottle I got for Christmas.

When I was little, and my Mother thought we needed a quick reviver, say after a long journey or something similar, she would whip up Egg Flip, egg, sugar, milk and sherry. I had my own little wine glass for this delicious concoction!

If you would like these @TooWicked - they are yours with my compliments.

Vintage yes, chintzy yes, but the real deal gifted to me by an old lady who poured you a Sherry as soon as you walked in the door. There are six in the set and they are in perfect condition, but just taking up room and I have so much clutter and stuff, I'd love them to go to a new home. Yours sounds perfect.

Just PM me if you would like them as a gift of course - and I'll pack them up and pop them in the mail.

What a lovely offer !

I love a sherry - but my sherry glass broke in the dishwasher just before Christmas , so DH poured me a Harvey’s using a champagne flute , to drink whilst peeling the potatoes for Christmas dinner this year ( peel one, have a sip and so on )

I was fine until I tried to stand up ! Didn’t realise quite how much a champagne flute held …

Itsnotover · 01/01/2022 08:56

Yes I like sherry.

SequinnedShawl · 01/01/2022 09:35

I like a nice sherry too.

I absolutely love a Sherry. There's a big difference though between a fino (dry and crisp, wonderful with some smoked almonds) or amontillado, and the sweeter sherries which many people think is "Sherry". I do also like a sweeter Sherry with pudding. Had an amazing one this Christmas from the Apósteles brand, which I think is the "posh" end of Gonzalez Byass. It was bloody gorgeous.

Here was my nye lunch Sherry choice. Go there quite often so I will slowly work my way through the most I think.

White Port. That's what you need to drink. Similar but far superior to Sherry. Serve cold with a cube of ice. A-mazing

Cookerhood · 01/01/2022 20:58

My parents were sherry drinkers. In the 70s they always had a sherry party between Christmas & new year. Everyone (including me) used to get absolutely plastered.
I haven't had one since they died & now I'm thinking about them. I will have one soon & raise my glass to them.
My dad drank fino, my mum croft original (which I can't bear) & I like a chilled fino or an amontillado. They always had one before dinner in their later years. Sometimes before lunch too Grin
