I've just discovered Sherry...

...after having to buy a bottle for a recipe I'm making.

I've only ever seen it being drank by Emily Bishop on Coronation Street years ago. I poured myself a small glass to try, and it's bloody lovely.

Does anyone else like a Sherry? This is a basic Tesco one, I'm guessing the more expensive ones are even nicer?

@PatriotCanes

Do you have a special glass for it as well? My grandparents were big sherry drinkers, from a pull down door drinks cabinet with dusty glasses.
I'm drinking it from a very small wine glass at the moment, I think I might need to buy some nice sherry glasses.

I really like a dry Sherry like a manzanilla as an aperitif if I'm out for a meal. There is just something about the crispness which sharpens the appetite, but it doesn't fill you up.

Also a PX at Christmas to go with the pudding is yummy.

I love sherry Smile I usually have at least 2 different to types on the go at any time, though they last for months because I'm not much of a drinker.

My favourite is Manzanilla. Very very dry, but smooth on the tongue. A savoury, almost umami flavour. Pastrana is quite a nice one.

If I want a very rich-flavoured, sweet sherry, I like Lustau East India Solera.

If I fancy something in between the two extremes, I like Waitrose Pale Cream Sherry. It's also the one I use for trifle.

Waitrose own-brand sherries are consistently decent IMO, if not necessarily spectacular. They're a good, budget-friendly way of exploring the different varieties. Waitrose also carries a range of other sherry makes and varieties. Wine merchants are also a good place to explore sherries. I've never spent more than £10-£12 on a bottle.

Enjoy exploringSmile

I love a Sherry , had a few on Christmas eve Blush

Dilbertian · 30/12/2021 18:14

@TooWicked

Is Harvey's Bristol Cream creamy like Baileys then?
No, 'cream' sherry means delicately sweet and smooth.

mummyh2016 · 30/12/2021 18:16

My nans favourite is Lidl's own brand!

Kitkat151 · 30/12/2021 18:17

Love a cream sherry....fattening though

Whattheduck · 30/12/2021 18:19

Harvey’s Bristol Cream is on offer in Sainsbury’s £10 I may have slipped one in my basket today
When we were kids my Nanna used to make us a sherry shandy (sherry and lemonade) I still like one now and again

HeyupitsChristmas · 30/12/2021 18:19

I love a sherry on a Sunday afternoon when I'm reading the paper. Sadly, we finished our bottle on Christmas Day so I'm sherry-less until I go shopping tomorrow.

If you're after some fancy schooners head to a charity shop, I got ours from there, they are so pretty.

Elphame · 30/12/2021 18:19

I've lost count of how many glasses I've surreptitiously managed to empty into unsuspecting plant pots.

Not a fan at all

Bellafrenum · 30/12/2021 18:20

It's lovely, but I prefer port.

plinkplinkfizzer · 30/12/2021 18:21

Port is good for toasting the Queen . Hic.

HeartshapedFox · 30/12/2021 18:21

Welcome to the secret sherry lovers club Grin
If you’re looking for sherry glasses you are pretty much guaranteed to find some in a local charity shop (not helping the old-lady stereotype much there, but it’s true).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/12/2021 18:22

I love sherry. Sunday pre lunch tipple at my parents house. It’s lethal though. Small glass. Makes me very relaxed. Great with an ice cube in too.

Roselilly36 · 30/12/2021 18:22

Where have you been OP? Croft, pale cream chilled in the fridge is awesome in the winter.

TooWicked · 30/12/2021 18:23

Exactly what I was thinking, I'm always mooching in the local charity shop for books, I'll have a look next time I'm in there.

I love a pale manzanilla served cold

Bonnealle · 30/12/2021 18:25

Definitely goes in the fridge and a wine glass is best (you don’t want one of those tiny liqueur glasses as you won’t get the flavour/smell). Just treat it as you would a white wine. Try manzanilla, fino, amontillado, oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez - they are all very different so you’ll be bound to like one. It’s lovely on a summer evening as an aperitif with some olives and manchego.

LaQuern · 30/12/2021 18:26

I have my mums old Crystal Sherry glasses from which I enjoy a Sherry or two on Christmas Eve whilst listening to carols from kings.

I'm far far younger than you think I am by the way...

PlanetNormal · 30/12/2021 18:27

I absolutely love Sherry. Sitting outside a bar in Cadiz in the evening with a glass of chilled, dry Manzanilla and some freshly made tortillas de camarones is my idea of heaven.

Gardeniafleur · 30/12/2021 18:28

A reblojito is mint bashed, ice, tio pepe and Schweppes lemonade. Yum.

saleorbouy · 30/12/2021 18:29

Harvey's Bristol Cream is a favourite tipple of my mother while stirring the gravy for Sunday lunch.
Her love of the tipple has now passed to two generations below her.
Bristol Cream is sweet darker sherry, it's good in grave and sauces too if there's any left!

Stiffcondomhat · 30/12/2021 18:30

A sherry before dinner is one of the many genius things my nan taught me.

Malibuismysecrethome · 30/12/2021 18:31

A very small glass of port helps me sleep.
