When do you take the lot down?

Just that really!

We had a lovely Christmas at my parents this year. Come home, got a big pile of DDs old toys and clothes to take to the woman's refugee shelter, new clothes washed and hung up, new toys in her toy basket.

Tree down, lights down, all the decks are down. I don't know about anyone else but as soon as Boxing Day is done I get an overwhelming urge to take down the decs. My mum keeps them up until New Year's Day but it stresses me out!

Just a little light hearted one really, when do you take your decs down?

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Whenever you want is fine.

I come from a family that frown if it’s taken down before the 6th but I think that there’s a natural rhythm to the period. I love these long, slow, easy days and have no desire yet to spend any energy. When the desire to clear it all away takes hold, I vote that you go with it. And if the work of Christmas largely falls to you, then I think you’re entitled to choose when to do it!

Even though we can almost all agree that Christmas Day falls on the 25th, people celebrate Christmas through different times, putting their tree up anytime from November to Christmas Eve. Time off can be different lengths too. There’s no definitive way to do it (and those who try and dictate to others are missing perspective)

Normally 6 Jan.

It's been a rubbish Christmas this year, though, and I'd really like to take everything down now. Have taken a few bits and bobs down but will probably leave the rest until Sunday for the kids.

On or around New Years Day. I like all the sparkle being up for NYE, but I’m good and ready for a change come the start of January.

I’m working NYE, DH will blitz the house and put the tree away.

StillMedusa · 27/12/2021 17:57

Today! It's been up nearly 3 weeks which is probably the longest ever in our house..usually it goes up when I finish school (I work there) but now I have a Grandson I relented Grin

I love my huge tree, love the lights, but once Boxing Day is over I want the rest of the holidays to feel calm...and for me, that's my house bing back to normal.

The outside lights stay up longer but inside... tree and decs away, a good hoover round and I feel happy!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/12/2021 17:58

Same as you, they're all down and the house has been cleaned from top to bottom! Such a nice feeling. I love Christmas but it's done now.

lonsdaleshorts · 27/12/2021 18:01

Mine came down today but I have left some lights up and my wreath in the door. We needed the space back.

HauntedPencil · 27/12/2021 18:04

New Year's Day or shortly after

I don't get why people get so sneery about when other people put them up and take them down - I think it's a lot to do with snobbery. I definitely like mine up for the whole 2 weeks off school but really do not care whats best for others!

GTAlogic · 27/12/2021 18:05

1st or 2nd Jan at the latest.

shakinsti · 27/12/2021 18:08

Not just yet. I'm always desperate to get the house clean and tidy but I also like to have the tree up for New Year's Eve. We'll probably take them down on New Year's Day.

ChristmasTreeBee · 27/12/2021 18:15

Mine will be done at the weekend, we keep them up for new year’s then take them down.

To be honest the amount of Christmas presents & tat in my house is amazing…dh has decided he’s doing a tip run tomorrow Xmas Shock

The house needs a bloody good clean & tidy up before our friends come down on New Year’s Eve

BogRollBOGOF · 27/12/2021 19:11

Some time around the 12th night, although with being trapped in the house (Covid) and not having done anything Christmassy other than a roast dinner and kids' presents, I might leave it a few days longer until the DCs return to school, and try and get a few nice days when I'm released at new year.

I hate it when people take the lights down early and everything gets plunged back into darkness. January is grim enough without extending the gloom.

WildWombat · 27/12/2021 19:21

Everything comes down here in between New Year's Day and the return to work after the bank holiday. I'm another one who likes a completely fresh slate to go back to work in the new year.

coogee · 27/12/2021 19:22

Usually 12th night, but am considering leaving them up until Candlemas this year

We did that last year with the tree and internal decorations.

TheChosenTwo · 27/12/2021 19:26

Usually down by now but we hosted on Christmas Day and also Boxing Day and I’ve been in bed poorly all day today. We always go away for new year, everything comes down before we go so we come home to a nice tidy clutter free house in the new year.
It went up on the 12th December, just over 2 weeks, that’s more than enough for us. We always get a real tree, don’t get it too early because it would risk not lasting. The 12th is quite early for us but because we now have to book a slot it was the best one to accommodate the 5 of us going to choose.

ItsSnowJokes · 27/12/2021 19:29

Ours came down today. I like them down the day after boxing day and before the new year. Tomorrow will be finding places for all the new toys and sorting the kitchen out.

CoodleMoodle · 27/12/2021 19:32

We take ours down at New Year. They usually go up on the 1st and come down on the 1st, but this year we had to put them up a day early, so I'm contemplating taking them down at the end of the month! The DC like helping with packing everything away, so I'll save it until I'm getting desperate for an activity near the end of the holidays.

Definitely ready to take it all down, soon.

DustySpringboard · 27/12/2021 19:37

Usually Jan 1st, earlier if we're away for new year.

Was tempted to take them down today (as go away tomorrow for 2nights) but the house looks so lovely (& cba!) also have friends here for NYE so will be nice to have them up

Passthecake30 · 27/12/2021 19:40

Probably 3rd Jan, ready for when we’re back at work. Always by the 12th night.

fabulous01 · 27/12/2021 19:45

My tree is down.

A few lights and cards still up but the tree was dead.

Luckyducky75 · 27/12/2021 19:59

Mine came down this afternoon 🤣

Fallagain · 27/12/2021 20:11

Christmas cards down as soon as possible. Tree down some time after NY but before the schools go back but we only have a tree up nothing else.

UserError012345 · 27/12/2021 20:13

Today. We put them up on 12th Nov though.

Holothane · 27/12/2021 20:17

Oh I’m decluttering all right yes got no idea. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Holothane · 27/12/2021 20:18

Sorry meant h has no idea.
