When do you take the lot down?

Just that really!

We had a lovely Christmas at my parents this year. Come home, got a big pile of DDs old toys and clothes to take to the woman's refugee shelter, new clothes washed and hung up, new toys in her toy basket.

Tree down, lights down, all the decks are down. I don't know about anyone else but as soon as Boxing Day is done I get an overwhelming urge to take down the decs. My mum keeps them up until New Year's Day but it stresses me out!

Just a little light hearted one really, when do you take your decs down?

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Sometime in January.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/12/2021 22:58

twelfth night. They have only been up a week as it is. Christmas doesn't start early here!

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/12/2021 23:09

and yes, this for me is the Christmas period. Not just the 25th. Christmas lasts until the 3rd/4th January here! I am in deep Christmas right now with everyone at home for at least the next week. Tis fab -cards games, telly, cheese, walks, wine, lovely food and family time. I love it.

All the stuff I don't do when I'm working.

Twelfth Night. Christmas has barely started. The three kings/magi haven’t even turned up yet.

hopeishere · 27/12/2021 23:21

For people who have taken it down - when did you put it up??

We take ours down 2/3 January but don't put it up until mid December.

MrsJBaptiste · 27/12/2021 23:58

I love this week in between Christmas Day and New Year, it's definitely still Christmassy in our house.

We put our tree and decorations up at the end of November and will take them down on New Year's Day.

RoseMartha · 27/12/2021 23:58

Usually about the first or second of jan.

StillMedusa · 28/12/2021 00:01

Mine went up on the 12th..early for me. Guests left yesterday and tree and decs down today. My family are fine with that (or used to it!) I'm the only one not back at work tomorrow so they aren't around anyway!

I suspect when I'm old(er) I won't bother with decorations at all.. it simply doesn't matter at all to me. I love seeing family, I love giving gifts, but I like my home tidy and a couple of weeks with a (large) tree up and xmas stuff everywhere is enough for me!
The post xmas vaccuming and tidying is very therapeutic!

HolesInMySocks · 28/12/2021 00:03

Already down. Piled ready to go in loft with other stuff that has to go up. That's going tomorrow.
All beds and bedrooms gutted through except dds wardrobe. Which is tomorrow's job.

Did a tip run this afternoon all Xmas packaging old clothes that are no good to give away etc etc.

Paperwork sorted this eve.

I made a huge list of stuff to do this week whislt dh is off and weather is crap. Phone calls etc to make.

I don't care if its a bit bah humbug they're down. I needed to. It was making me agitated doe to the clutter with all the new toys most of which are large

MorvaanReed · 28/12/2021 00:04

First thing new year's day. We have a good clean round and it feels like a fresh start.

1concernedmummy · 28/12/2021 11:21

Tree up till the 12th. Still leaving a small present for DD under there each day, as she gets overwhelmed with a heap of presents on Christmas Day.

stargirl1701 · 28/12/2021 11:30

The tree only went up on Christmas Eve! It'll be there until Twelfth Night. Crib scene will still until Candlemas.

We don't celebrate Christmas during Advent so there is no feeling of 'had enough'. For me, this is my favourite part of the year. Morning walks, lunch together, reading together, afternoon movie, a nightly feast, board games together, etc. We strengthen our family bonds over the 12 days of Christmas.

danidandan · 28/12/2021 11:33

@JaninaDuszejko

12th night. Not religious but of course the 12 days of celebration predates Christianity. Our tree has only been up a week and it's not till Boxing Day that I can relax and enjoy my Christmas holiday and the decorations.

If you wantgto take decorations down on Boxing Day how about delaying when you put them up next year, maybe you'll start to appreciate the holiday period

It has nothing to do with appreciating a festive period Confused

It's personal preference. We love Christmas. We appreciate the time off.
But with working and having a baby it's the only time I can really get stuck in and do a declutter.

No January doom and gloom here. Having a clear out clears my mind. DDs new toys have a home. I use this time to do various charity runs / woman's refugee runs. We've had Christmas Eve, day and Boxing Day and that's when we do the majority of our celebrations. (Which we do appreciate.)

I appreciate people do things differently hence why I started the thread.

@Itstheprinciple

This is so miserable! I'm still very much enjoying my tree and relaxing in the lights during the evening.

I can be doing with the competitive race to get the decs up early and then to get them down ASAP.

Same here. Christmas spirit is lacking otherwise.
willowstar · 28/12/2021 13:28

I may be an outlier here...but we out our tree up in Xmas Eve and I will take it down tomorrow. For me and my family this isn't a lovely long time off..I worked until the 23rd, my husband worked until the 24th. We both had the weekend off then I have been back at work yesterday and today. I like to contain xmas.amd have a really lovely time while we can, but it is over for us so I will take the tree down while I am off tomorrow and get the house nice a clean. It really is a genuine urge to declutter and have space and light.

MrsAmaretto · 28/12/2021 16:01

It will be down by the twelve night, probably 3rd Or 4th Jan as I go back to work on the 5th. We don’t put ours up super early though, normally the 2nd Sunday in advent.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 28/12/2021 19:26

I took mine down today - haven't put them back in the loft yet but will do that tomorrow.
We hosted Christnas day and Boxing day and all guests have gone now - out on New Year's Eve so not got anyone else coming round .
Love the feeling of clam and knowing we have survived another year!

HolesInMySocks · 28/12/2021 20:28

I agree it's personal preference. I have spent 2 days with dh off and we've cleared so much stuff. Paperwork. Wardobes. Old Xmas decs the lot. All tip run, clothes bank etc.
The weather's been rubbish the older ones happily playing toys. Youngest hasn't been too well so has just wanted to watch tv with snuggles from whichever one of us isn't doing something.
I have 2 small. Jobs left to do. Then it's done whole house is done we have a fresh start to new year clear mind. And such a busy January with new ventures were now in a good place to start without adding more to do.

lollipoprainbow · 28/12/2021 20:31

@HolesInMySocks you've already told us this ! Still sounds joyless.

allycat4 · 28/12/2021 20:34

There are 12 days of Christmas! If people resisted putting up trees in November then they might enjoy Christmas proper...

gogohm · 28/12/2021 20:45

Twelfth night of course. Put them up later if you are fed up by the 27th

iglpgl · 28/12/2021 20:52

Exactly! I don't understand this recent trend for putting trees up in November then taking them down before New Year. Confused
User48751490 · 28/12/2021 20:56

Weekend before schools return so probably Sunday. Cannot wait to get back to normal.

User48751490 · 28/12/2021 21:16

Don't clean here on New Year's Day as it's a day to celebrate with steak pie and lots of hand shakes with family. Will be playing Auld Lang Syne on piano for them all no doubt.

Matilda2013 · 28/12/2021 21:50

So my tree goes up 12 days before Christmas and comes down on the 27th. I do wonder if there’s a correlation between the tree staying up and people who are off work right through?

It’s alright saying it’s nice and relaxing to do things around but some people are back at work at Christmas and in between.
