When do you take the lot down?

Just that really!

We had a lovely Christmas at my parents this year. Come home, got a big pile of DDs old toys and clothes to take to the woman's refugee shelter, new clothes washed and hung up, new toys in her toy basket.

Tree down, lights down, all the decks are down. I don't know about anyone else but as soon as Boxing Day is done I get an overwhelming urge to take down the decs. My mum keeps them up until New Year's Day but it stresses me out!

Just a little light hearted one really, when do you take your decs down?

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

I'm taking mine down on the 5th January.
I like them up for new year and I'm enjoying them so I'm keeping them as long as seems right.

Nonnymum · 28/12/2021 21:56

Mine stay up until 12th night. I especially don't understand why anyone would take them down before new year. The period between Christmas and New Year is still Christmas time and it just doesn't seem right to take them down early. Besides it seems a lot of effort if they are only up a very short time

It's absolutely criminal to take them down until you have celebrated New Year's Day. Come on!🤷😮

I never put them up. The last 2 Christmases alone just killed it for me.

Holothane · 28/12/2021 22:08

I don’t celebrate new year, this year I’m counting down to stranger things but that’s it.

TheChosenTwo · 28/12/2021 23:15

Ours came down today, they’ve been up for exactly 2 weeks and 2 days.
Perfectly enough time for it to feel special but before they become a pain in the arse, the house feels fresh and airy and tidy again now!
We are away on holiday now until the new year so they always come down before we do that, it’s a ball ache coming home to a potentially dead tree with needles everywhere but also all the washing and sorting out for school and taking all the decs down too - no regrets.

This thread is so predictable...people putting their trees up in November and it has to come down on Boxing Day as they are fed up of it. Each to their own of course and all that but mine will be up until 12th night. Enough gloomy nights ahead in the coming couple of months.

I wasn’t fed up of my decorations. Christmas is over in our family. I took them down.
2pinkginsplease · 29/12/2021 09:50

Normally the 12th night but I’m back to work the 5th so will take them down the 4th.

Threebecomesfour · 29/12/2021 09:51

New Year's Day or day after. Feels like starting afresh even though I'm sad to see the lights go!

Mine’s up for 3/4 weeks, down after New Year, but how sad to be fed up of your tree. I’m always a bit wistful when I strip mine.
Courcheval · 29/12/2021 09:59

We always wait til after New Year. Think we'll be taking them down on the 2nd this year as its a Sunday.
The house always looks so depressingly bare once the decorations come down.

Theforest · 29/12/2021 10:01

New Years Day. I see NY as part time of it all.

Not fed up at all, just utilising time to sort through and start fresh for the new year, won't have time to do it another time due to work and looking after a baby..

Nothing to do with being fed up. More to do with being practical with my time!

Honeyroar · 31/12/2021 22:35

It just seems a little sad that’s all you can find to do on the chilled, relaxing week between Christmas and new year. It sucks the fun out of Christmas seeing everyone boast about pulling their decks down so early.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 31/12/2021 22:41

I usually leave mine up until 2nd Jan or so, but this year they came down on 29th as kids went to their Dad's and new kitten can't be trusted!

JaninaDuszejko · 01/01/2022 08:46

I was walking into town yesterday and every house still had their decorations up, and the local Christmas Tree collection isn't till next weekend so most will stay up till then. Those who take them down before the New Year must know they are in the minority.

And I find the 'I work and have a baby' comments hilarious, how does that explain anything? This is MN, the majority of posters have children and work. By that argument since I have 3DC, work FT, and currently have a houseful of (11) visitors after celebrating Hogmanay in my decorated house and yet will still manage to take down the decorations in January while working in my demanding job then do I win the thread Hmm?

Our decorations went up 2 weeks before Christmas and we've taken them down today so we could do a big clean & tidy after last night.

We still have fairy lights and candles around the fireplace and the shelf above the door though and, as usual, they'll stay up all year.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/01/2022 21:21

Grin I shall wear it with pride

The rush to put up the Christmas tree in November and down by Boxing Day has been promoted by the retail companies. They want to sell “Christmas” in November and Easter eggs the day after Boxing day! Tradition doesn’t matter to sales.

Shallwegoforawalk · 01/01/2022 22:29

Twelfth night here. Can't imagine not having our beautiful tree and lights for the relaxing week between Xmas and Hogmanay. Christmas isn't just 2 days - it's 12 days! We only put our tree up the weekend before Xmas though.

In my part of Scotland New Year is still a massive deal so it would be the oddest of odd to have taken your decorations down before then - people would think someone must have died as that would be the only reason to stop the party!

Exactly this! I don't know anyone locally who takes their decorations down before Hogmanay, it's part of christmas!
