In regards to social services, I work in a children’s hospital and we often see Section 47s. In most cases, the referral comes from the schools having noticed bruises/marks and general poor appearance. Very rare that a family member is the one to refer unless it’s the other parent (the non abusive one) or else the child is so severely beaten that they were rescued and brought to the hospital for urgent treatment. This doesn’t sit right with me as I find it hard to believe that other family members don’t notice or report. With Arthur and Star’s cases, it appears to me that social services don’t take family members concerns seriously. Please bear in mind though that this is just one hospital in one borough and is not reflective across the country, just my personal experience.

And you're probably right, sadly. She is very young and will still be young enough to conceive when she is released.

It is my firm opinion that often social workers are afraid of their clients. Quite reasonably, I suppose, as the typical chaotic/abusive home is unlikely to be welcoming. In the case of Baby P one social worker had not dared to enter the home.

I am not familiar with social work procedures, but imo there needs to be a -quite literal - beefing up of social work staff, such that they are or accompanied by personnel who are not intimidated.

Totally agree. Social workers should not be expected to work alone in those circumstances. IMO if a report of abuse has been made, whether against a child, partner, disabled person or elderly person that means there is a chance you are attending a home with a violent person in it. The police get lots of physical response training to attend reports of violence, SW don’t. They need to have trained support with them when attending these reports.

Even then, I don’t think they should be working alone.

I don't think suitable training would be enough. Obviously police officers do get attacked but I think if both were put in the exact same situation a social worker is more likely to be threatened or attacked than a police officer.

I'm not great with names but someone on bbc breakfast this morning was saying that the average social worker leaves the job after 7 years. I'm not surprised but it's very concerning. At my far less important job I have colleagues with decades of experience who I turn to for advice on trickier cases. I wonder who they are expected to turn to if they have a case that raises serious concerns and are struggling to get sufficient proof to take action.

Exactly.

Huntley and Hindley are convicted murderers, as is Brockhill. Frankie Smith is not.

Brockhill is pure evil, she completely destroyed so many innocent lives, assaulted Star multiple times and then killed her. Only an hour ago she was laughing in the dock, she shows no remorse for what she did. She deserves to rot in hell.

Reading the trial updates today and apparently SB has collapsed and suffered multiple cardiac arrests during her time in trial…?! I hope that doesn’t mean they’ll give her a lesser sentence. They’re saying she isn’t in the robust health you’d expect someone of her age to be…

Ill health won't be a mitigating factor.

Hopefully the laughing will mean the Judge sees SB for who she really is and gives her extra time. The mask is dropping.

The update on SB illness. Discharged herself so as not to delay trial, apparently. Before the cause of the seizures could be identified.

In a totally unrelated note, does anyone know what type of drugs present in a prison would cause seizures and cardiac arrest?
