Stupidly hard work quiz (help!)

If anyone remembers previous years my work sets a stupidly hard quiz for us to have a go at every Christmas. This year's is no different....

I've managed to complete the first 8 puzzles myself but now I'm stuck Xmas Sad Very frustrating as I've got the gist of the puzzles but can't figure out what the answer is!

Here's the first one and here's my answers. If anyone can figure out the final answer (two words 5,7) I'd be ever so grateful 😊

@Dadalus

What's bugging me is if each clue gives a letter, then you'll have 20 letters, so not the answer or an anagram of the answer (which has 12 letters), and it being an anagram of a clue to the answer feels overly obtuse to me.
I think the twenty (or forty) letters might spell out an instruction, which gives the answer. Like (completely made up, so don't get excited!)

LOVE INTEREST IN THIRTEEN

Then the "actual" answer would be that character. Maybe?

Inertia · 07/12/2021 18:32

Didn’t see the second photo with the answers, sorry!

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2021 18:33

Not Kevin Costner.

Polka that's what I'm thinking

Is the answer definitely the movie or could it be the actor name?

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2021 18:47

Either

I have taken the letters listed further back the thread

DEMOOLMERWWFDLAETRNEUBPPFFAMDHECEAISEEAF

and found all these words

FAMOUS
FILM
WHERE or WERE
MADE
ACTOR
PEOPLE
BAFTA AWARD

but I can't make a full sentence only using each letter once.
Frustrating and will keep me occupied for hours!

pastabest · 07/12/2021 18:55

What if the 40 letters are a saying/catchphrases from a film released in 2000?

riotlady · 07/12/2021 18:58

@pastabest

What if the 40 letters are a saying/catchphrases from a film released in 2000?
How the grinch stole Christmas was the top grossing film of 2000, does the quiz normally have a Christmas theme?
MirrieDancer · 07/12/2021 18:59

Could the 5,7 be oscar nominee?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/12/2021 19:01

Ooh, that's a good thought!
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:03

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams that' what I am working on But not having any clue as to how many words is a bit of a pain in the bum Smile

Still working on it, with pencil and paper and online decoders Smile

pastabest · 07/12/2021 19:04

Wouldn't explain the numbers though (yet, anyway)

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:08

The 20th best selling film in 2000 was Me Myself and Irene

The 20th best selling film of the decade was Shrek the third

DEMOOLMERWWFDLAETRNEUBPPFFAMDHECEAISEEAF

Maybe not. No K no Y...

edin16 · 07/12/2021 19:09

A BAFTA winning film from 2000 or 2020?

captainjacksparrow · 07/12/2021 19:12

Could the 20th relate to 20th century fox?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:12

@pastabest

Wouldn't explain the numbers though (yet, anyway)
Which ones? The ones in the deadline Twenty from the 20th?

T+F

Or the films, or actors, or characters from the films of those numbers? Or soemthing else entirely Smile I can't find a connection there either!

Thegrassisntalwaysgreener · 07/12/2021 19:13

The only thing I could think of was it's a list of who's who - Tom hanks, Mel Gibson,

George Clooney is missing from the list

That fits the 5 and 7

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:16

20th Century Fox

C+N

The Croods (20th best selling film) or Mrs Doubtfire if you only look at America

But it has only had 17 Best Picture Oscar nominations and four wins

Mummylovesmonkeys · 07/12/2021 19:16

Twenty from the twentieth - ninth January?

edin16 · 07/12/2021 19:16

Is it just coincidence that Harrison Ford is the main actor in the first three?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:18

And George was also in the Expendables wasn't he?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 07/12/2021 19:23

@ApocalypseNowt

There's one other puzzle I'm stuck on in this round. This is it and these are my answers so far:
Greet tidal flow = wave
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 19:24

Oops! That was wishful thinking...

pastabest · 07/12/2021 19:29

He is missing isn't he.

No idea how we get to him from the rest though!

CoffeethenCrochet · 07/12/2021 19:29

Great to see you back! Off to catch up on what I've missed so far.
