Calling Rolex Owners

I've been 'courting' my Rolex contact for well over a year without successfully sourcing the watch I want (there is only one I'm looking for) newly released (ish) and they are few and far between.

Can anyone recommend anything else I can do to expedite it? I can't make one magically appear in store but can I try to get in touch with a head office? I'm desperate for tips.

I was aghast at the hoops you have to jump through to get a Rolex and keeping my contact sweet is really pissing me off!! I'm considering tell her to stuff it but I really really want it!!!

It’s a whole other world, and not one I’m likely to have to navigate, but it’s fascinating. Good luck OP!

Exhausteddog · 24/11/2021 15:13

DH has got a rolex - he's had it years, I'm pretty sure it wasn't that much of an ordeal to get one because he would be too impatient for that kind of thing (it might have been second hand) However, hes absolutely appalling at time keeping, so however much it was I don't think it was worth it!🤣

MondayYogurt · 24/11/2021 15:14

Ah @queenofarles there's been a lot of quantitative easing money sloshing around, has to go somewhere I suppose. I was aware of the Chanel rises as part of their marketing.

Having seen the lengths people go to to get a Birkin, then flirting with a watch shop employee is nothing.
It's a very clever and deliberate marketing ploy. Keeps the money from their wealthy customers rolling in while they await the coveted item. Also ensures that the less wealthy ones part with cash while they "build a relationship with the brand" and live in hope. It's nuts.

I don't really buy super luxury items, but if I did I think I'd go back to the Middle East to purchase. You can wander into any high end store for a browse without being made to feel like you don't belong there.

JamAutistically · 24/11/2021 15:29

@SouthOfFrance

I misread the title of this thread as Roblox instead of Rolex

Going to back away slowly from the insanity of interviews, playing the long game and cultivating fake friendships with dealers, and get back to spending real money on fake online items for my avatar.

🤣 Love this. Especially " and get back to spending real money on fake online items for my avatar. "

It's no "investment" but there's more real personal enjoyment with that, I'm sure. Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2021 15:30

It's a very clever strategy. Lazy watchmaker is sick of making loads of watches. How can they make massively fewer but still make a shit ton of cash? I KNOW!

It's like the diamond trade. A total con.

Spot on. Clever brands/business owners and their team. claps

Thanks to all who have given me some tips and insider info. The comments are much appreciated.

Also appreciated are the not so supportive comments, many of which have made me laugh.

I understand opposing views entirely. I am aware that I am in a privileged position to be considering buying this. What I'll say in mitigation is: I've been on a low income, I've worried about how I will pay for the next Tesco shop, I've gone without so my children didn't, I've lived in a permanent overdraft. Then, I'd have been incredulous at this thread too.

For various reasons, I'm not in that situation any more and I want to spend my money as I wish.

It's each to their own in this case.

“the demand is so high, that if you do get one it will be worth around 30-50% more when you walk out of the door. It’s pretty much the best return on an investment you can get at the moment”

😯

JamAutistically · 24/11/2021 17:37

OP, I doubt opposing views automatically mean someone in an underprivileged position. Haven't seen anyone here speak from that place or jealousy, as you're insinuating. I haven't seen anyone here condemn you for wanting to buy it, so I don't think there's a need to share your history because you'd still be free to buy whatever you want even without the history. I always wonder why people try to justify their financial position in life.

For some, the opposing view could be people who think jumping through hoops to get something that's not exactly a need is bonkers but an excellent marketing ploy. These people may or may not have the money but that's irrelevant. It could also be people who have the money but don't feel the need to buy something because it's expected or 'it's what you do' as a rich person, unless they actually need it.

Horses for courses though.

corblimeygov · 24/11/2021 17:40

Yeah totally relate, so my kind DH bought an omega instead. Has pretty diamonds, was enough to make me swoon.

GrrrlPwr · 24/11/2021 17:42

Do those that have real rolexes not worry they will get mugged for it?

ILoveHuskies · 24/11/2021 18:57

@MeridasMum you know what ? I totally get that
I've been on the bones of my arse too and it was fucking grim.
I remember barely being able to afford to eat and feeling like I'd never escape poverty. Over time though, Through a combination of hard work sheer determination AMA a bit of luck I'm fairly well off now. So I know how you feel about wanting to treat yourself and why the heck not. (The treat i would like is a Porsche Boxster hopefully not in the too distant future - I'm more of a car girl than a jewellery/ watch girl)

I may have gently ribbed a bit on this thread but mostly I've just found it really interesting (still can't believe there's such a thing as interviews for a watch 😅)

So I genuinely hope you find and enjoy your dream watch Thanks

FromEden · 24/11/2021 19:02

We just walked into the Rolex boutique last year and bought one (US). Is that not how it works in the UK ever or is this waiting list/relationship development and interview a new thing?

Nesbo · 24/11/2021 19:12

Depends on the model. Less popular watches are more readily available, some take years to get unless it is worth it to the dealer to prioritise you over everyone else trying to get one.

Sensateria · 24/11/2021 19:14

DH has been on the waiting list for a rose gold Daytona with Oysterflex strap for two years now

  • in the past five years we’ve bought me a rose gold Datejust and him a white gold Daytona, and it appears that our purchase history has been no help whatsoever in bumping DH up the list, or Rolex just aren’t making and distributing many watches now.

Have you considered having a look abroad? As a PP suggested, DH is thinking of going out to the Middle East to see if he can pick one up there.

AnyFucker · 24/11/2021 19:45

It’s like climate change never happened Grin

DavidDevantsSpiritWife · 24/11/2021 20:23

@TrickyD

We bought two ‘Rolex’ watches in a Turkish market as presents for our young DSs.

We were burgled soon after. Not much taken other than the fakes. I bet the thief got a surprise when he tried to sell them.

Many years ago when I lived in a very affluent part of West London I was mugged. He wasn't interested in my bag/money - he demanded my Rolex watch and my 3 carat pear cut diamond ring.

The thought of him trying to shift the watch (a fake off Shepherds Bush market) and the ring (which was CZ) did take the sting out of the whole experience a little Grin

ButterfliesAndDaffodils · 24/11/2021 21:05

@MondayYogurt

Why are they so restricted? Is it like having to do the Hermes journey?
Hermes journey? I'm almost afraid to ask, but please tell what this journey involves.

Also please let it be referring to the son of Zeus travelling between worlds. Or at least the journey of a parcel from origin to destination by a slow and shitty delivery service.

Because if a 'Hermes journey' is something that one has to undertake in order to pay mad money for an ugly handbag, I seriously want to club myself round the head with a caduceus. Or a damaged and late delivered parcel Wink.

Oh don’t justify yourself to that crowd. They live for threads like this to show how grounded and savvy they are 🤣

MN is strange sometimes , you see posters always saying MN is Mostly MC high earners and yet when someone starts a thread about a watch or bag posters goes mental.

what is the Hermes journey??
Pedallleur · 24/11/2021 21:59

Rolex is the biggest luxury brand watchmaker. They make 1 million plus a year. There isn't a shortage you can find anything you want on e.g. Watchfinder or Chrono24 albeit at an inflated price. The dealers have a hand in this, unloading desired models to friends, old customers etc who they know are moving them on to make a profit. Imagine going to Tesco and being told you have to spend £x pounds before they let you really shop there. I've had a few Rolex and other brands but now they are too expensive and I won't subscribe to the dealers. Ones I did buy I bought pre owned.
