Calling Rolex Owners

MeridasMum · 23/11/2021 20:29

I've been 'courting' my Rolex contact for well over a year without successfully sourcing the watch I want (there is only one I'm looking for) newly released (ish) and they are few and far between.

Can anyone recommend anything else I can do to expedite it? I can't make one magically appear in store but can I try to get in touch with a head office? I'm desperate for tips.

I was aghast at the hoops you have to jump through to get a Rolex and keeping my contact sweet is really pissing me off!! I'm considering tell her to stuff it but I really really want it!!!

I was in a posh jewellers last year buying what for me was a posh watch. Not quite a Rolex. Waited while they took some links out and people watched in the shop.

Lady comes in, wants to get her patek serviced. The timescale is insane. Something like 3 months. So she demands to just borrow a brand new patek from the window display to wear while it's away.

The level of entitlement was utterly hilarious. As if they'd do that. (They didn't)

Iamthewombat · 26/11/2021 23:06

@savvy7

I've never heard of anything so ridiculous as having to have an interview before you can be sold a watch
I really want to know the interview questions. Not in order to buy a bloody watch, just for the laugh.

Are they competency-based questions? Eg ‘describe a time when you had to persuade somebody to do something NOW PERSUADE ME TO LET YOU JOIN A TWO YEAR WAITING LIST TO BUY ONE OF MY PRECIOUS WATCHES, PEASANT’

As for the ‘Hermes journey’: hahaha. As described above:

Those who are committed to the cause will often travel to Paris; make an appointment for a bag consultation, where you discuss your requirements and why you think you deserve to be allowed to buy a Birkin bag tell them which colours and trim details you would accept if such a bag were available. You get a proper grilling. Your specially trained Hermes consultant will then pretty much decide if they will allow you to have one from the stash they have out back. It seems they'd rather sell none than sell one to the "wrong" person.

Does anyone really do this? For a sodding handbag? Especially the type that people like posh spice carry, talk about a debased currency.

Iamthewombat · 26/11/2021 23:11

I am really laughing about the ‘specially trained Hermes consultant’ who decides whether you are allowed to buy one of their ugly handbags. I wonder what the training is like? Do they get sneering lessons from experts? Do they stand around a flip chart brainstorming? I need to know.

They must have seen you lot coming!

Several times, pretending to be friends and having interviews.

I wonder if they record them to laugh at the obsequious bits later on?

user1471462428 · 27/11/2021 07:17

The Leeds shop had these in stock when I went there and they don’t interview anyone! They make you a cup of tea and show you their watches! I went in in my work clothes and had a snoop. Their customer service is fantastic. Worth a trip if you’re close.

Any ideas on where to get a Rolex valued/sell it? I bought DH an oyster perpetual three years ago and he never wears it, so I suggested we sell it but not sure how to go about it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/11/2021 07:50

I had a similar issue with a 'MoreFit' watch and when I did get it the darned rubber strap broke after a few weeks.

And it cost over £15, so not a cheap one. Sad

queenofarles · 27/11/2021 09:15

Does anyone really do this? no Confused,
You fill a waitlist with the bag and Colour you want , you are allowed only one bag on the waitlist, if it comes available they call you and you pick it up. It can take some time , anything from few months to up to a year, but most other bags are up on Display and available to purchase
I declined one Bag from my waitlist as the leather was my least choice , im very picky now ,
10 years ago I would have bought it instantly !

As I’ve said a lot of people do exaggerate and have created this urban myth that you must jump through hoops to be qualified to buy a bag,
It may seems like total madness to some, but for others its not.

Live and let live.

@ChristmasPlanning No idea! It's kind of a fascinating dilemma. They need to remain the most exclusive bags in the world, and a store of value, but also continue to broaden the appeal to the masses. My suspicion is that these headline bags do generate money, but the margins may not be as enormous as those on the myriad cheaper products, the perfumes/scarves that actually make profit.

@Iamthewombat - with some of these watches if you’re able to buy one from an authorised dealer at the standard retail price it’s like the retailer is gifting you money for nothing. You can sell it immediately for more than you bought it for, and in the case of some watches that might mean you’ve just made tens of thousands of pounds worth of profit, just for buying a watch!

Dealers don’t (officially) particularly like people buying watches from them just to sell on to someone else at a vast profit, so this idea of “interviewing” customers is more about trying to work out if you’re selling to a person who genuinely wants to own it, or to someone who is going to hand it straight to a second hand dealer so they can pocket some cash.

I say “officially” as there are always suspicions that some dealers have arrangements to sell watches to people who will do exactly that, so they can share the profits with them. You can see why it would be tempting, they want to make money but they aren’t allowed to sell these watches for more than the official price, so they feel they are missing out. But.. if the watch brands know an authorised dealer is doing this they are likely to cut them off and no longer let them sell their watches, so it is a risky move.

The other thing is that if a dealer only gets a few watches a year, and loads of people want to buy those few watches, they have to decide who to sell them to.

Is it better to be scrupulously fair, let people put their names on a list and gradually work your way through it. Or, do you keep your best customers happy?

If you have someone who regularly spends large amounts of money in your shop and they say they want one of these hard to get watches then there is a strong temptation to push them up the list to keep them happy, rather than selling to someone else who might never buy anything else from you ever again.

It does all sound crazy, but from the point of view of a shop having more potential customers than products to sell to them, all the craziness does sort of make sense.

And for people who are going on a list, you want to be considered a good customer who isn’t out to make a quick profit, hence all that jumping through hoops malarkey.

Iamthewombat · 27/11/2021 14:48

Yes, yes, but what are the interview questions?

If they are variants on, “are you planning to sell this watch to somebody unworthy for cash?” then it might be quite easy to game the interview, eh? If you are daft enough to go through the charade in the first place, that is.

I have no objection to people with money spending it as they please. If I wanted a certain piece of jewellery or clothing I’d buy it. What I wouldn’t do is go through the nonsense of being ‘approved’ to give a shop a pile of cash in exchange for their wares. Something wrong with the customer/vendor relationship there, I think.

Nor do I think that the Rolex price bubble will last, so I wouldn’t be abasing myself on the grounds that there might be a future profit on resale either.

Nesbo · 27/11/2021 15:25

I don’t think it’s like a job interview, although understand that would be funnier. I think they would just describe it as a chat to get a better understanding of their customer - whether they are a collector, whether it’s a one off purchase for a special occasion, that sort of thing. If they understand why you want a particular watch and they know it will be hard to get i would guess they might make other suggestions if they think you’d be open to them.

And maybe if there was a piece of jewellery you thought would be perfect, and you knew that after dropping your £30k on it you could (if you wanted to) go to the dealer next door and sell it to them for £80k, maybe you would be prepared to have a chat with the jeweller over a coffee.

It’s not really for me but I don’t find it that unbelievable that people do it.

You get the same thing with other luxury products - it’s not enough just to have the money, the real prestige comes through connections and access. There are sports cars (like some models of Ferrari) made in small numbers that are only ever made available to people who already own several and so have “proved” their commitment, so being allowed to buy one is like reward. It’s a completely different world.

@SirGawain

This thread wins the internet. I’ve never seen such stealth boasting in my life.
There's precisely zero stealth boasting. Stealth boasting would be sidling on to a thread about children being picked up late from playdates with an anecdote about the time you were three hours late to pick up your DC because your Rolex was being serviced. OP asked a question for people with Rolexes and pp are responding about their Rolexes. The clue is in the title.

Possibly, but not always. If a dealer doesn’t have the watch they can’t magic it up, because even they have to wait for their allocation (as lots of other dealers will have the same issue and there aren’t enough to go round).

But yes, if a customer comes in who is known to be a multi millionaire who regularly splashes huge amounts of cash on stuff like that, the shop is probably going to decide that it’s in their long term interests to sell it to them rather than someone they suspect will never spend any money with them ever again. Life is cruel!

AdoraBell · 28/11/2021 00:30

Twighlightstarbright I was browsing on Mappin and Webb site, their home page has a link - sell your watch. Might be worth a try.

Snally82 · 29/11/2021 07:18

I was just thinking similar - OP asked for help from people who own or have owned a Rolex (or multiple). Those people replied. It’s really very simple Hmm

My sons invests in Rolex watches, it started when his company bought him a 20k one as a thank you for all the work he brought in. Not sure how many he now has, but you don't lose on a new sought after Rolex.
I wouldn't wear one, as it's like the wild west where I live and don't fancy getting my hand chopped off.
