How many washes do you get?

I’ve just killed another washing machine (always bearings) apparently I just use it too much. I do 16 full loads a week and get almost 2 years so say approx 1600 washes. Apparently this is unreasonable bordering commercial Hmm

I’m not after a debate about rewearing pants, just tell me please how many washes do you reckon you get from a machine?

Genuine non judgey question- how on earth do people manage to do a family’s washing in 4 runs a week? Do you mix bedding, towels and clothes in 9kg full loads?

I do 3 or 4 loads of colours/dark (school uniform , jeans, tshirts , sportswear, sweatshirts etc as well as towels or bedding if they're dark colours)
1 loads of white/pale colours (mainly school shirts, tea towels, cloths and bedding - and pale towels) at 60°.

Underwear, sportswear and school shirts are washed after one wear. Other stuff probably worn more than once. Towels are washed 1-2 times a week (each person uses 1 towel and there is a hand towel in the cloakroom)

Ajl46 · 19/11/2021 19:41

What brand do you go for? I reckon I've got about 3,000 washed out of my Samsung over 8 years.

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/11/2021 19:43

Thanks for all the replies, more interesting than it should be! I think I’m going to get a big drum again but fill it with a mix of clothes, towels and bedding from now on.

one load dark
one load lights every other week
one load jeans every other week
one load of sports gear

family of 5

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/11/2021 19:45

When my 4 DC were young, I did around 2/3 washes every single day.

I had a Zanussi. It lasted from the first being born till the youngest was 13, around 19 years.

I cried when it died.

I've a Beko now, apparently it's a Zanussi by all bar name. I only do about 4/6 loads a week now, as it's just the two of us.

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/11/2021 19:45

@Ajl46 always Bosch for £7-800. I think I thought a cheaper one would die even faster.

RoseMartha · 19/11/2021 19:50

About 4-5 loads a week.
My previous Bosch lasted 16 years with this amount of washes, in fact was still going when I sold my home and moved and left it as agreed with the house.

I have had my new one a year.

MrsKDB · 19/11/2021 19:51

16 loads?!

Our bosch is almost 14 years old. 4/5 loads per week (family of four)

littlelordfuckleroy · 19/11/2021 19:51

@YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake

I do about 20 loads a week (8 kids, 1 in cloth nappies, 2 adults) and my washing machine is about 5 years old I think. Tumble dryers on the other hand barely last 2 years.
And here's me feeling guilty for using some tin foil
MaltedMilk88 · 19/11/2021 19:52

I have a Bosch classix I've had 14 years, my parents bought it me when I moved out - it's still going strong
Gone from 1 load a week to about 4 now with the kiddies!
Can't believe you do 16 loads a week!! 😬

emptyvesselsmakethemostnoise · 19/11/2021 20:04

Probably about 10-12 loads a week. Just had to replace a 20 year old Bosch, that to be fair didn't have many original parts left. Went for another Bosch

I mix bedding and towels (2 loads a week)
I wash all the clothing together except for DH's work shirts (so that's 2 loads of clothes and one of dh's shirts). Dh and I don't put on clean clothes every day (except underwear and the work shirts). Yes I do 9 kg full loads. Just pop m in in the morning and put them in the dryer after lunch.

nannybeach · 19/11/2021 20:05

We had an LG which was very expensive some where between 12 and 15 years,10kg load. 4 kids 2 adults, uniforms. Got another LG,wash mostly on cold. Assuming a lot of people on here must have 12 kids
A dark and light only full load
Some time 2 of us,often(like now) 2 GKs
Everything apart from undies worn several days. 3 hours for a wash!!! Dread to think what your carbon footprint is,and your electric bills

Nearlyadoctor · 19/11/2021 20:12

I’ve had my Miele 19 years and my father/step mother had it for 7 years prior to that. I’ve washed horse numnahs, dog beds etc over the years. DH works on a farm so farm overalls etc every week , plus probably 7-8 normal loads a week and it’s still going strong. If I can afford it I won’t even contemplate another brand when the time comes.

DDMAC · 19/11/2021 20:13

Do you have hard water? I think that has a big impact on machines. I use a Calgon every wash 2 if it’s a big was. We do about 7 a week also and it’s five years old now

RampantIvy · 19/11/2021 20:20

I do 16 full loads a week

Wow. That is a lot of washing!

How many people are in your household?

There are three of us when DD is home from university. I do about 3 - 4 loads week depending on whether she is home or not. I do full loads only, and separate towels, bedding and whites, lights and darks.

I change the bedding and towels once a week.

Going off topic but interested to know what your electricity bill is?
LIZS · 19/11/2021 20:24

Probably five or six. Wm is 30+ years old! (Touch wood)

RampantIvy · 19/11/2021 20:27

Oh, and our washing machine was in the house when we moved in 18 years ago, and is still going strong, not even needing a repair either. Our previous washing machine was over 20 years old when we retired it.

RogueV · 19/11/2021 20:27

I do about 5-6 a week, washing machine is Bosch and we have had it around 8 years so around 1800+ washes. Machine is in perfect condition!

GiantKitten · 19/11/2021 20:27

My Bosch is nearly 10 years old; it gets used less since all adult kids left home, maybe the average over the period would be 3-4 per week?
So 1500-2000 washes so far.
I do try very hard not to overload it - never more than 2/3 full, & never spin above 1200.

KrispyKale · 19/11/2021 20:32

One a day overall I'd estimate.
Last couple of machines have been lasting 5/6 years.
They used to be more robust.

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/11/2021 20:34

About £60/mth which includes cooking.

never spin above 1200.

Ah I let mine ramp right up to 1400 to help drying. That maybe another issue.

Quornflakegirl · 19/11/2021 20:35

I do 4-5 loads a week. Since leaving home at 21 I’ve owned 3 washing machine in 21 years.

BillywigSting · 19/11/2021 20:35

16 loads a week is madness, there are three of us and we do three, four tops including bedding, sports gear and towels.

How on earth are you doing so many?
