How many washes do you get?

I’ve just killed another washing machine (always bearings) apparently I just use it too much. I do 16 full loads a week and get almost 2 years so say approx 1600 washes. Apparently this is unreasonable bordering commercial Hmm

I’m not after a debate about rewearing pants, just tell me please how many washes do you reckon you get from a machine?

Our last washing machine lasted 5 years. That's averaging about 7 loads a week.
If you're doing 16 loads a week (do you have an enormous family?) then I don't think 2 years is out of the norm.

wertheppl · 19/11/2021 17:29

Hmm I'm not sure some days it can be 3-4 if I'm doing towels and bedding plus a normal wash or 2. Some days nothing but most days at least 1-2. I think we must average 10-12. There's 2 adults and 2 preschool children that make a mess of themselves. My youngest still in nappies and often leaks through co she drinks far too much!

Pre children we would do 4 maybe 5 max a week.

Current washing machine is 5yrs old but 1 year child free and second child not quite 2 yet. I shld probably expect it to give up soon!

@HeatingOnHeatingOff

I know Miele say their machines last 20 years based on 2 wash loads a week.

You are definitely hammering your machines which is why they are only lasting 2 years.

2 washes a week? That is not very many
LefttoherownDevizes · 19/11/2021 17:30

We use our machine as much as you and have come to the conclusion we did get there Christ that meets our needs with the longest guarantee, in our case £250 odd from John Lewis with 5 year guarantee.

Hodgehog · 19/11/2021 17:30

16 loads a week ?! Shock how many of you are there ?

I use it twice a week

prediction500 · 19/11/2021 17:31

Isn't there a law or consumer right that means that parts need to be available for repairs on appliances such as washing machines or is it still yet to be introduced?

batmanladybird · 19/11/2021 17:31

Miele machine has lasted 12 years very few probs, prob 8 loads a week. Maybe 10
Miele dishwasher only lasted 5 / was cheaper to buy new smeg than replace Miele part

We are a family of 6 and all appliances work hard

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 19/11/2021 17:32

Not sure, but probably about the same as you 5 of us in the house inc 3 DC at secondary. At least a load's worth a day. Then a couple of loads of whites, towels, bedding, dog stuff. We do replace the washing machine quite often but took out some sort of plan on the current one and have had it mended a couple of times. The someone advised us to by the best, branded basic model we could rather than the same price unbranded that had lots of fancy programmes.

Starcaller · 19/11/2021 17:32

We do about six washes a week. Our washing machine is four years old and still going strong!

prediction500 · 19/11/2021 17:34

Found it. It's called the right to repair. May not cover your part but worth looking into.

Manufacturers are now legally required to make spare parts available to people buying electrical appliances. The aim of the new rules is to extend the lifespan of products by up to 10 years and benefit the environment. However, one company said that the new rules could make white goods more expensive.

Twillow · 19/11/2021 17:34

I've had the cheapest Beko machine for 8 years now. We definitely don't do 16 loads a week though, maybe 5? How on earth are you doing that many?
It stopped working recently, I diagnosed the fault (thanks internet) and bought the part for £15, fitted it myself (thanks Youtube) and it's all good again.

Runnerduck34 · 19/11/2021 17:34

Family of 6, I do 2-3 loads a day. Im on my second miele washing machine, first one lasted over 10 years and second one is doing ok but just replaced the door seal, must be about 6-7 years old . They are expensive but real workhorses, if you have a big family and do a lot of washing your going to need a good quality machine.

MakkaPakkas · 19/11/2021 17:37

Had mine 7 years, about 6 washes a week. So so far, 52 x 7 X 6= 2184 washes

Theyellowflamingo · 19/11/2021 17:41

About 5 or 6 loads a week. Current machine is into its sixth year - it’s a mid range Bosch model.

stingofthebutterfly · 19/11/2021 17:46

16 loads a week is insane. There's 7 of us and I do 2 loads of bedding, 2 of towels, a dark, white, light and bright wash a week, sometimes an extra dark one. That's 9 at most. Our current cheapy washing machine has been on the go for three years and the one before that was still going after 9 years. We only got a new one because we moved and it was integrated.

Echobelly · 19/11/2021 17:47

I do 7-9 washes a week (family of 4, DC 10 and 13) I'd say, and we're on our 3rd machine since living together, so I'd call that about 5 years per machine.

Amazed how many washes other people do - where do you find the room to dry it?! We're in a 4 bed house and it feels like the house is full of laundry even with what appears to be relatively few washes.

Crunchymum · 19/11/2021 17:47

16 loads a week is completely unnecessary. You even say yourself OP, that some are half loads.

We are a family of 5 and we do 4/5 lots of washing a week.

InTheLabyrinth · 19/11/2021 17:51

Prob 6 loads a week, family of 4.
Machine must be 8 yrs old, but 4 of those years this house was rented out, so no idea what abuse it got during that time.

MarmitesMyMate · 19/11/2021 17:52

I do min 3 a day. 6 if us. More so when it's bedding each week, towels daily blah blah.

Max I get out of a machine is 3 years.

Crunchymum · 19/11/2021 17:52

What an earth do you to to generate enough dirty laundry for (up to) 21 washes a week?
FinallyHere · 19/11/2021 17:52

Have you considered getting a machine intended for the commercial market?

Chasingsquirrels · 19/11/2021 17:53

I'm 49 and on my 3rd washing machine having had my 1st for my 21st birthday. I think I got this one in 2016 so had the first 2 for about 23 years.
I probably do between 3 and 5 loads a week.
Every so often I do all the sofa cushions which is 4 or 5 loads, or extras for other reasons.

I'm guessing based on the above about 2,500 washes.

fluffyblanketfeatherpillow · 19/11/2021 17:57

21+ loads a week. Family of 4, one child has special needs that means washing +++ Yes, thats accurate, and yes, it was full loads.

I now have a commercial washing machine. Definitely wasn't cheap but does a 9kg 40 degree wash in 48 minutes.

Caspianberg · 19/11/2021 17:57

Do a load every day usually. Although washable nappies account for 3 of those. So 3 nappy washes, 4 for bedding, towels, clothing.
I do divide washes into types, but do for example white wash week 1, then week 2 no white wash and wool wash instead.

Quickchangeartiste · 19/11/2021 17:57

Gosh I am not far away from that number of loads but they are not full loads - I am just very fussy about separating loads, and a clean freak with 2 dogs. Anyway, my current Siemens is 7 years old, runs at least twice a day for 5 days a week. I think 2 years is very poor.
