ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

@Wilberforce42 I’m feeling quite scared again.

It’s all starting again but even more dystopian

thenightsky · 12/11/2021 16:44

@Wilberforce42

Austria to lockdown the unvaccinated from tonight. I am speechless. From Radio 2.
That's really upset me. I know a few people who have chosen to to be vaccinated, and they are all reasonable. Why are we not allowed choice or free thinking anymore. Sad
GiveMeNovocain · 12/11/2021 17:01

I'm clearly still shockable after reading Austria are locking down people who haven't had the covid vaccine. It's such an awful precedent and makes no sense

But neither does believing that an unvaccinated carer is worse than no carer at all. It's like they're trying to overload the NHS and make people suffer. I can't believe how rational thought has gone out the window. Cos covid seems to justify anything 😢

Wilberforce42 · 12/11/2021 17:02

Very very angry tonight. None of it makes sense. Very scared now for our freedoms.

MrsEWeatherwax · 12/11/2021 17:12

I heard about Austria it’s scary isn’t it. And I’m double vaccinated and booster booked. Mainly to selfishly protect my parents.
On Radio 4 might of been Tuesday they had a care worker on being interviewed and she said she just wanted more time. Not being sacked just before Christmas!
I felt so sorry for her, having worked at the front line so to speak and now being sacked.

I heard that headline too. How does that even work prohibiting a significant section of society from functioning as it will impact everyone's networks (work, teams, volunteering...)

The coercive discrimination and removal of bodily autonomy going on through European countries is utterly disgusting... and we're not free from it either. It's all so disproportionate.

I had my two doses (so far...). I'm less likely to be unpleasantly ill (and my odds were decent anyway), my odds of spreading are reduced but not eliminated. I could still spread norrovirus or flu or any other vulnerable person. Such is life.

In small consolations I'm sitting in the car outside the martial arts venue and that's progress on this time last year where other than a few nights in December it was banned from Nov to April. (Still banned from waiting indoors though!)

Note how on the map within that link, Sweden is doing rather well on cases.

Irelands slow reopening and vaccine passports have hardly saved it at this moment in time.

It's almost like all these punitive meaures are pretty ineffective in the end and not worth all the other harms they cause.

I can't believe a vaccine has created such toxic debate. It should be a cause for celebration that we can offer protection to the vulnerable but it should be a free choice. It's very sad.

CoffeeWithCheese · 12/11/2021 17:52

I alternate between despair and fear at the moment about what the world has become.

BelleHathor · 12/11/2021 18:04

What's happening in Austria is disgraceful. The fact that it is happening in a so called democracy is shameful. Pre C19 the government would have been denounced but now crickets.

Re: Sweden, it stuck to it's long held pre pandemic plans and used only limited mitigations most voluntary. Children stayed in school even when cases rose (and then fell).

justasking111 · 12/11/2021 18:34

Ireland from Monday you'll need proof of double vaccination before being allowed to visit family.

From 1st December ditto for partners of women giving birth. They'll not be allowed to enter the hospital

In a recent article I read about Austria about numerous financial / political scandals in recent times, the author said that Austria likes to think of itself as a mini Germany but is actually more similar in many respects to its eastern neighbours.

Totally agree with another PPs point, how can no carers / nurses be a better option than a non vaccinated carer / nurse. Has no-one in government noticed that there is already a shortage of both?

justasking111 · 12/11/2021 18:44

Friend married an Austrian Forty years ago, he was weird she became weird. Fast forward twenty years friends daughter married an Austrian. In both cases the husband's from the beginning exercised control over their wives. These two lovely Welsh girls just disappeared becoming stepford wives. Their families have little contact with their children, in one case in the other the husband insisted no children. It was and is sad and creepy

justasking111 · 12/11/2021 18:49

I should add that Germany are thinking of doing similar

65% vaccinated in Austria
67% vaccinated in Germany

Worldgonecrazy · 13/11/2021 07:23

Bloody conspiracy theorists getting it right again .

Also Plan B due to be implemented soon, I haven’t been brave enough to review it but hope the usual loopholes are there. I’m actually feeling glad our government are selfish wankers who want to minimise restrictions for themselves as it means anyone paying attention can use those same loopholes themselves.

WouldBeGood · 13/11/2021 07:43

Who can possibly think these measures are ok?

It’s terrifying

Wilberforce42 · 13/11/2021 07:53

Yes I never thought I’d be so grateful for our shitshow of a government

Wilberforce42 · 13/11/2021 07:54

All of this going on in Europe and the delay to its implementation in the uk is what has made me so vocal on the C boards lately. I am so desperate for people to look at what is going on and see that it is so very wrong before they are caught up in the slow creeping psychological assault that I’ve watched unravel in France. In a very generic sense, the British are not known for enjoying being told what to do and so I maintain some hope that there can be a pushback.

As I try to explain over there all the time, I have absolutely nothing against vaccines and freedom of access to them and it’s beyond brilliant that they are available to hopefully save the lives of the vulnerable. But they must not be made mandatory and people must not be punished and removed from society if they choose not to be vaccinated or take the latest booster. It is a horrible slope to start sliding down and I can’t see anything positive on the way down. It is setting a precedent for total loss of personal freedom when you are no longer able to decide what goes into your body and what is next?
It also horrifies me that governments like in Austria have got to the point where it’s seen as acceptable to segregate parts of the population.

Taswama · 13/11/2021 08:30

Agree with every word of this.

DS1 got a letter a few weeks ago telling us he is eligible for 2 doses of the vaccine and he / we could book him in at a walk-in place. So as no sign of it being done at school, I booked him in for a jab for next Saturday (not going to take him out of school or travel 20 mikes away so first local appointment).

Then school announced they were doing it and I thought i must remember to cancel the original appointment. He had it at school yesterday and this morning I had an email from the NHS telling me they have cancelled his appointment for next week and to remember to book him in for his second one in 8 weeks. I was absolutely flabbergasted.
I never expected it to be so joined up. I showed DP and said '"look what the NHS can do with the right motivation". He said it was because they outsourced it and got actual IT experts to do it rather than doing it badly internally.

But either way, just depressing that we have put up with crap systems, lost referral letters, unnecessary paperwork and bureaucracy for years (and that's probably still the case for every other area of the NHS) but this has been executed really well because they were prepared to spend the money.

Playgrind · 13/11/2021 08:42

@Wilberforce42 That is unreal, its hilariously of no use whatsoever it must be from Brass Eye. Except its not which makes it somewhat terrifying.

Unfortunately this this discrimination is not just in Europe, Australia has gone crazy too.

WouldBeGood · 13/11/2021 09:25

In Austria it’s saying unvaccinated people allowed out only once a day for essentials
