ADs and The Brave New World

BogRollBOGOF · 20/10/2021 22:55

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

I met a friend today in the street, she was wearing a mask but I don't know if she had just forgotten to take it off after coming out of the shop. Her and her family are just recovering from covid and her daughter who is only 9 or 10 had to go into hospital as she is a type 1 diabetic (that was only discovered last year and she was very poorly with low blood sugars) and it affected her sugars etc. Luckily they all seem better now, except her mum hasn't had her sense of smell or taste returned. But her cousin died of it last year and her ex partners best friend died of it a week ago (34, in general good health)so you can understand why she's nervous. Thing is she's not loudly proclaiming those who aren't wearing masks are selfish or stupid etc.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2021 19:23

I do think each to their own ad long as no preaching

smallandimperfectlyformed · 10/11/2021 20:25

Same here WouldBeGood. I choose not to wear one in most circumstances but no judgement on those who do choose to wear them.

ISaySteadyOn · 10/11/2021 20:54

Same here. It's one of the reasons I like DD1 and DS' school. It really is a personal choice and we all interact with each other and no one is really bothered about whether or not anyone wears a mask. It's a really nice atmosphere.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 11/11/2021 12:42

Another visit to the testing centre today as youngest was really whingey last night, seemed to have a bit of a temperature and coughed quite a lot. Bless her woke me up at 4.30 am. The man at the testing centre was really lovely and helpful, encouraging her to let me put the swab up her nose for the suitable amount of time. It's supposed to be her birthday party tomorrow and it's her birthday on Saturday and I have a really exciting job assessment on Saturday too so it would be really inconvenient if she did have it! She actually seems fine now. I did say to the man that I felt like I was abusing/traumatising my children constantly taking them there and he even said it's the time of year for coughs and colds anyway. I wonder when that will stop? I'm not prepared to do it forever to my girls!

justasking111 · 11/11/2021 13:19

Our family are done with PCR test for covid two year old to six years old grandchildren hysterical in the past few months in Wales. They get a cold we all get a cold. We're done complying. I swear it's a only replacement sexuall release for impotent drakeford

Ecina · 11/11/2021 15:53

Hello All
Been away for yonks having been an AD from the very first thread. Kept me sane through some very dark times and numerous name changes!
I've had a tough time with what I see as complete global covid insanity. The main thing that has kept me sane over the last few months is to take no part whatsoever in any covibollox. When I realised that scientific endeavour was a thing of the past and 99% of the population were living in paranoia and cognitive dissonance, and there was absolutely no hope of having a sensible measured discussion about actual facts and science I just withdrew from all things covid. So much better for it!
I stopped reading anything at all from any MSM; stopped coming on MN etc; cancelled Guardian membership, turned off R4; never wear a mask; have never 'tested'; and haven't been vaccinated. Mainly though, I just stopped engaging and trying to reason with people.
Having been a political animal, a nerd, a lover of knowledge and intellectual discussion, I found it painful to be surrounded by this unscientific, illogical, immoral codswallop and eventually realised that there's no place for someone like me in Coviworld, so I've withdrawn. And it's so damned freeing!
That's my happy thought for the day!
I hope you are all finding ways to cope.

Lostinacloud · 11/11/2021 18:00

Love that philosophy @Ecina Smile

Lostinacloud · 11/11/2021 18:01

@MercyBooth come back to this thread, the covid pirates are after you over there and you need some time out CakeFlowers I hope you’re ok x

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 11/11/2021 18:32

I saw @MercyBooth thread too. Really weird how people couldn't see the difference between personally wanting to have the booster and having to have it to access basic stuff. I'm not entitled to it on the criteria but might be offered it through work. I'll almost certainly have it if I am but that's very different than thinking people should be forced to.

I'm in Wales too and this made me 😂

The policies here are so unpredictable and it doesn't seem to matter what's happening with cases. They just seem to react based on some alternative reality in their heads

Lostinacloud · 11/11/2021 19:16

Same in France where I am. Alert status used to be when cases hit 200 cases per 100,000, now it is activated and they all panic when it goes over 50 per 100,000.
I mean 50 cases per 100,000 people and average cases of 10,000 per day out of 66 million people. It’s bloody nothing and their hospitals are nowhere near any kind of capacity problem and yet it’s panic stations and now over 65’s will lose their access to daily life if they don’t take the booster by mid December. Utter madness, it just gets closer and closer to 1937, which is both ironic and sad on this day of remembering those who died for our freedom!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 12/11/2021 06:52

I just had a peak over in the 'rona zone. Isn't it strange how just a couple of weeks ago everyone was spouting that we need those medical grade masks in public "just like Germany", we need to be "more like Germany" to get our numbers down, we are a laughing stock "unlike Germany".

Well that's all come to an abrupt end hasn't it.

I don't understand the idea that people here are convinced the world are "laughing at us" over covid. My experience is that they've their own shit going on.

After spending most of my summer in Greece and talking to various Europeans, the only thing they are laughing at is the idea that we constantly test ourselves despite being vaccinated. I injured my foot on the second trip and had to go for an x Ray. Was chatting to the doctor at the hospital who found it hilarious that despite being vaccinated I've to test twice a week to work.....

Worldgonecrazy · 12/11/2021 07:17

@LivinLaVidaLoki

I was agreeing with you all the way until you reminded me you had spent most of your summer in Greece.

Now I just too jealous to agree with you on anything GrinGrinGrin

WouldBeGood · 12/11/2021 07:50

Yes, @LivinLaVidaLoki, it’s very strange.

And here in Scotland we appear to be copying the countries with the soaring numbers 🤷🏻‍♀️

😁
Sorry!

Taswama · 12/11/2021 08:07

Sounds like a very sensible strategy @Ecina .
I did very similar for most of last year, switching from R4 (the background to my life since childhood) to R2, to R6 and on really bad days to Radio 3!

On the plus side, it meant I read a lot more and read 60 books last year!

You are absolutely right @LivinLaVidaLoki . The constant testing is madness. Neither me or any of the DC have ever tested.

@Lostinacloud - what happened in 1937 in France?

Lostinacloud · 12/11/2021 08:31

@Taswama I don’t know if I have the date right but I was being a bit cheeky by comparing it to wartime in France. You have to show your pass to move around in society and some members of society are not welcome! Now the government have told over 65’s their pass will be cancelled unless they get the booster - all a bit too dictatorial for my liking Sad

Lostinacloud · 12/11/2021 08:32

I’m sure the boosters will be rolled out to everyone else soon enough and then we will all be subject to the same pass cancellation.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/11/2021 09:07

I switched the Radio (2) off for months from within a couple of weeks of the first lockdown because it was so bloody funerial and I couldn't take it dragging on and on. Same for the news.

The problem I had was that my existence was reduced to battling the kids over home learning and feeding them... while living in DH's office (the room he was using carries the sound all over the house) and there was no escape (other than as many long runs as I could handle without access to an osteopath!)

My attention span was shot from the constant presence of family, neither alone nor having proper social input. Anything seemed to come back to the Covid situation, even what had previously been escapist fiction. MN was toxic, on some levels it hasn't helped me, but it did allow me to protest into the abyss, and find other people who were also struggling and questioning what was happening and the wider costs of what was going on.

In the winter lockdown I did end up taking up minecraft to eat up some hours of existing... I should have done it far sooner Grin

By the way @MercyBooth, don’t go back to your thread, there are some serious hardcore D’s on there. I’m doing my best but I have PMT power on my side this morning. You are stressed at the moment so no need to fight with them Flowers

BelleHathor · 12/11/2021 13:41

Lurking and watching your escapades with much admiration Lostinacloud. You mentioned the place that must not be mentioned (Sweden), it really is like the films and he who must not be mentioned. Flowers

amicissimma · 12/11/2021 15:58

What's wrong with Sweden?

ISaySteadyOn · 12/11/2021 16:06

Sweden only had mild restrictions not Draconian ones. They didn't lock down properly.

Wilberforce42 · 12/11/2021 16:19

Austria to lockdown the unvaccinated from tonight. I am speechless. From Radio 2.
