ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

So glad you got to the theatre. We were in London in October before the latest madness kicked off and it felt wonderfully normal.

NannyGythaOgg · 31/12/2021 23:43

Happy New Year everyone

Hopefully we are on the road to full normality (and I can et a holiday this year)

smallandimperfectlyformed · 01/01/2022 01:37

Happy New Year to you too NannyGythaOgg and all you other lovely AD'S. Hope you have had a lovely night and let's hope 2022 is so much better than the last 2 years have been.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 01/01/2022 08:27

Happy New Year all x

ISaySteadyOn · 01/01/2022 08:28

Happy New Year all. And a belated Happy Birthday to you @smallandimperfectlyformed.

110APiccadilly · 01/01/2022 08:41

Happy New Year! DD and I are ushering it in by having a stinking cold (am going to do an LFT later - on me only - I'll assume we both have the same thing as we have identical symptoms and under 5s aren't meant to be tested in Wales anyway - to check it is a cold, but I think it is).

BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2022 16:50

Happy New Year ADs!
My optomism is back up, and I think there is a good chance of a more recognisably normal and stable year ahead. Hopefully applicable beyond England...

I got my second negative LFT which released me to go and see the new year in at parkrun Grin
I took it steady and as with any illness, was slower than usual for the effort, but it was good to be back out in the world and in fresh air!

Doncha just love the lurgies the little ones share 😅😅

Annoying to read that a cold was almost certainly covid on some government FB crap.

110APiccadilly · 01/01/2022 18:17

In some ways I was relieved she'd picked up a cold as I'm not sure she's had enough exposure to germs in her little life!

The LFT says not Covid and I think I know who we got it from, and they don't have Covid either, so that's good enough for me.

Taswama · 01/01/2022 19:12

Happy new year ADs.
Not had a great break. DP hates being at home as it reminds him of his job which he currently hates so has been dragging me and dc out for muddy walks every other day at least. But the dc and I just want some quiet days at home so I'm not feeling relaxed. Am quite close to telling him to quit his job. I have suggested he goes for a walk / run / bike ride on his own but he doesn't want to.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2022 19:43

Unfortunately for our DCs, DH and I are fans of walks... we try to avoid excess mud (there are a lot of options for that around here!) and we try to mix the scenery up.

We survived last winter on twighlight walks along the river and around town as the parks were irritatingly busy and open land so squelchy. At least we took ourselves off somewhere quieter rather than just whinge about people having the audacity to do the same thing in the same place as us Grin

Yeah I like walks too @BogRollBOGOF but on the days we haven't been for a walk we've been travelling to see someone, travelling back, both in one day or it was Christmas day. I need some time to just go for a run on my own, without a reminder to 'be quick because we are having an early lunch'. It's dark or nearly by the time we get back so I don't want to go then.

GreenPumpkins · 02/01/2022 16:13

I love a walk and there's lots of different ones around our house. Sadly DS hates walking which means I rarely get to take advantage the local area.

Belated happy new year to everyone. Ours was quiet although we did stay up until midnight which is more than we usually do. I didn't see the point in staying up when it was just me on my own. DS requested to stay up this year and then said 'is that it?' Grin

I'm hoping school goes back OK on Tuesday. Loads of people I know seem to have covid and it's making me nervous. None of them have more than a cold though so that's good. I just hate the thought of staying in for a week.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2022 21:30

If you do get stuck, you could always watch The Princess Bride. I just introduced DS to it. He loved most of it.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2022 21:30

Except the kissing bits 😂

110APiccadilly · 02/01/2022 21:35

Anne who doesn't love The Princess Bride has no taste at all. I need to rewatch it. It's been too long.

110APiccadilly · 02/01/2022 21:37

Anyone, not Anne. I'm not accusing some random Anne of having no taste. I am now wondering what Anne Shirley would have made of The Princess Bride though.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2022 21:47

Anne Shirley, Diana Barry, Ruby Gillis, and Jane Andrews would have loved it. And if you recognise the other three names you are a kindred spirit Smile

Don't forget Marilla and Mathew. 😂
ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2022 23:08

I don't think Marilla would approve at all. Matthew would like it quietly.

110APiccadilly · 03/01/2022 06:23

I think Marilla would be disapproving of films in general. Anne would be desperate to see them, and Matthew would sometimes quietly give her the money to go. Though it has to be said I'm imagining them in the early days of cinema - maybe the 20s - rather than the current day.

Taswama · 03/01/2022 09:16

I have no idea who you mean (please tell me!). I thought you meant Princess Anne.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/01/2022 09:20

Anne of Green Gables by L M Montgomery. And the subsequent novels about Anne. If you haven't read them yet you are in for a treat. They are my favourite books ever.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/01/2022 10:24

Interesting news about reducing the need for PCRs and accepting the result of LFTs. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for constant testing culture which can be ridiculously beurocratic. I'm not expecting immeduate miracles, but it is a start for winding down.

Yes I'm reading it that way too @BogRollBOGOF . I think thats a good thing.
