ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

Covid hopping from person to person like fleas here. One event 23rd the only event we attended, four couples two couples lockdown yesterday.

Friends pub four staff off. Our planned girls lunch on Thursday for eight now looking like four and the restaurant is threatened closure with so many off.

It's a shit show but seemingly a mild one 🤞

GreenPumpkins · 28/12/2021 19:31

Hope you're not feeling too rough Bog

Covid came to our outdoor family gathering last week. Luckily it's been confined to one family group and not hit the rest of us. Gutted one of my friends has it as well though. We don't see each other often but had been hoping for a catch up over Christmas.

I'm still trying to book my booster for a specific date in January but failing. I want it by a 3 day weekend and I don't get many of those. The first two made me feel like shit so I'm not holding out much hope of being fine after this one. I really hope I won't be expected to have anymore. I think 3 in just over 6months is plenty.

I was looking at my chance of dying from covid today. It's tiny 1/20,000 ish. I also looked at my mum's who has much poorer health and lots more underlying conditions and even hers was estimated at 1/200. I think we've completely lost the ability to risk assess. I hope Boris holds his nerve.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2021 20:51

I'm feeling like I have a regular annoying cold which is kind of a relief after fearing that the Ds might curse me with needing a ventilator since March 2020 Grin

I wish it was legal to diddle off on a nice quiet country walk to blow to cobwebs away and clear the sinuses. Prancing around to exercise videos with a window open is not quite the same!

I remember looking up calculators on targeted risk factors last year a few months in, and they were very reassuring. The odds must be much better now... she hopes... sniff, sniff Grin

Sajid Javid has been tweeting in defence of parkrun's health benefits. Reassuring that England is not looking to solve a pandemic by banning individual community sport... but hypocritical that his government's rules already made it unviable for 16 months!

Dim point 🙄
BogRollBOGOF · 29/12/2021 01:40

Ooh! I understood that!

"Dim" is in Bogroll's roadside Welsh vocabulary Grin

Araf!
Ysgol
Dim Parcio
Tacsi

Ok, what does dim mean? @justasking111 (Apart from the English meaning which works too).

Just seen Guardian article specifically calling out Wales.

justasking111 · 29/12/2021 09:57

Dim translation means No , we mix it in with English in this house. The guardian well there's a turnaround them having a go at him

justasking111 · 29/12/2021 10:05

Getting a bit fed up with the pious telling folks who've said they can't get LFT anywhere that they've had no problems as if we're lying. Dripford instructed the Welsh to flow and go every time they leave the house including supermarket shopping. Of course we've run out the sheeplike are testing at least once a day.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/12/2021 10:32

I have to admit I am bothered by the fact that the LFTs look like pregnancy tests. What if you mixed them up?

ISaySteadyOn · 29/12/2021 10:33

Though I am not sure how you would when I think about it

I find it hard to get enthusiastic about any change of heart. More likely, on past performance, it means another U turn and a ban on skipping or running in a public place will be announced in 3 weeks. Grin

Dim is no, as in Dim Parcio, no parking.

I always was a bit too interested in road signs Grin

Fair point on U-turns (don't know what they are in Welsh, there's not many of those on my favoured A458 Grin ) but I'm bouyed by the 1922 committee being twitchy about further restrictions, and it's too embarrassing to push anything through by relying on Labour, and bans on skipping will just be laughed at and ignored.

How bizzarre to to be reliant on and grateful for Boris' inflated ego and Sunak's depleted wallet (well, the public one anyway)

There's a painful irony in people relying so heavily on LFTs made in China.
They do filter some cases, especially if used in a targeted way, but they do breed false security too. Mine was negative hours after the scratchy throat developed and faint next morning and I could easily have gone out with a clear LFT hours before the throat started, and being Christmas Day, that was easy to dismiss by starting on my new gin early!

Though I have to say all those posts stating that taking an lft before visiting anyone is ‘the polite thing to do’ are giving me the rage. I wonder how “polite” it will be considered when people have to start paying £20 to £30 a test?

In better news, I am starting to feel a little bit hopeful that the Ds may be diminishing in their power. The snowdrops will soon be here! A sign of hope and summer to come!

Hello everyone! Hope you are still feeling alright BogRollBOGOF. Sorry I am no help about the app FatLadySang as I tried to download it a while ago and as I don't actually have a valid passport at the moment I couldn't get it verified. I went to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park recently though and just showed them my vaccination card and they accepted that and my brother and sister in law had registered their lateral flow test on their phones so it wasn't as difficult as some places can be. It's my 40th birthday today and I'm going to see Phantom of the Opera today, so excited!!

Thanks. Got it in the end. I went for just the covid one in the end.

Enjoy Phantom today. The West End has really been hit hard let alone the disaster for smaller/regional theatres and touring companies.

Happy birthday and enjoy Phantom!

Feeling fine here. Mildly sniffy and that's about it. While I have no burning desire to see other people and create close contacts, it feels bloody ridiculous that it's illegal to go for a walk/ run in a quiet place with an infitesimally small chance of spreading infection.

Tried to book a table for lunch today for 3. OMG three were closed covid another Three only doing evening dining. Finally found one they have five staff off, their sister restaurant has 13 off and they're teetering on closing . CONWY only had two pubs open NYE one of those has closed today covid.

NYE here is a write off hospitality wise.

Taswama · 30/12/2021 18:37

Happy birthday @smallandimperfectlyformed . I bet Phantom is amazing!

I'm off out for a meal with a good friend this evening and we had to pay a deposit, but hey at least its open!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 30/12/2021 21:30

Thank you all for the well wishes, it's been an absolutely lovely day! Phantom was truly incredible and then they took me to Dishoom for some truly scrumptious Indian food. The West End was reassuringly busy and I took a lateral flow test yesterday in case I needed to show it but the only thing was being asked to wear a mask in the theatre. Not my favourite thing to do but if it's that or not see a play mask me up baby!! justasking111 it's such a shame what Drakeford is doing to the hospitality industry Sad

So pleased you had a good birthday and jealous you got to go to Dishoom.
