New branch just opened near us. Tesco is getting more expensive so thought I'd give Aldi a go. Any recommendations of things to try?

Greek Yoghurt. It's far nicer than the brand they're trying to copy.

DentalWorries · 15/10/2021 17:40

Oh gosh I forgot about the crisps. I may have eaten a share bag of their salt and vinegar crisps for lunch yesterday. In my defence I did start by putting a few into a little bowl but then made several trips to the kitchen to fill it up Blush

Fliss444 · 15/10/2021 17:41

Worth mentioning that a lot of their fresh fruit and veg are excellent value but best eaten within a couple of days.
Nuts are fantastic value as is the selection of bread, wraps, etc.
Chilled cheesecakes and trifles are as good as anywhere you would find but so much cheaper.
BEWARE though -- you may enter the building for a few groceries but exit with a TV ,Bicycle, X trainer ,etc.!!!

I've always been a huge cheerleader for Aldi, but they seemingly changed the recipes/suppliers of a lot of the products that I buy regularly, and I just can't love it any more. A lot of the things are noticeably less good quality Sad. I still nip in there because it's convenient, but I don't do a big shop there now.

Marmite27 · 15/10/2021 17:46

Oh and something new I bought today was some sweet chilli beetroot and it’s lovely.

LouLou789 · 15/10/2021 17:46

Jerk chicken salad bowl is bloody gorgeous

DowntownFrown · 15/10/2021 17:56

The roses that are £2.99 a bunch are lovely and last a good 2 weeks, the house plants I bought have all survived over a year and normally I just have to look at something green for it to wither and die Blush

indigoemerald · 15/10/2021 18:01

The Specially Selected layered yogurts. They used to have a lime and mandarin one which was my favourite thing ever, but they discontinued it so I get the mango and vanilla one now. Fortunately Lidl do the lime and mandarin yoghurt so I can still get my fix when I shop in a Lidl.

The Hash brown waffles are also nice

What are the birthday cakes like?

OP posts:
Gemster19 · 15/10/2021 18:31

Been shopping in Aldi about 5 years and the only things we've ever bought we didn't like was the baked beans and the tomato ketchup - we've found everything else to be as good, if not better than branded stuff, so go nuts!

What are the birthday cakes like?
Cake is one of the things they've always been bad at. They're all cheap-tasting and overly sweet. Even in the days when I mainly shopped in Aldi, I would never buy the cakes.

Generally find their stuff good quality but I make special trip for:
Greek yoghurt with coconut
Organic porridge in a recyclable paper bag
Soluable vitamin C tablets (near the shampoo and stuff)
They do quite a bit of organic veg now which is good

OooohAhhhh · 15/10/2021 18:45

The coconut Greek yoghurt ( big tub)
Nakota chocolate spread (Aldi version of Nutella, tastes the same only this is 99p).
Mighty peas in the frozen section! They are 2 big steam bags of garden peas in a mint & herbs purée - only 80 something pence and I buy them all the time!
Oh...middle aisle is a must!!

NotYourCupOfTea · 15/10/2021 18:47

Trail mix stuff is good
Partbaked bread is lovely especially the olive ones
Frozen section especially for fish is good
fancy pizzas are nice
Wine is good they do a lovely Pinot blush
Go ahead type snacks are literally the same!
Do not buy the pudding Christmas chocolates you will eat the whole pack Blush

Avoid the middle aisles mostly junk although cleaning products can be a good deal

For my local one the soft doesn’t last long (strawberries/ raspberries type) but everything else is great

I save about £20 a week going to aldi and it’s so efficient - you need to get ready to pack very very quickly so make sure you warm up whilst in the queue Grin

NotYourCupOfTea · 15/10/2021 18:48

Oh also duck spring rolls in the frozen section - sooooo tasty

OooohAhhhh · 15/10/2021 18:48

Also the dried packet mixes of Bolognese, casserole & chilli are really tasty and nice. 30 pence or something. I use them in the slow cooker

PigletJohn · 15/10/2021 18:55

Mayo

Luxury ketchup

Chocolate

Bockwurst

Echobelly · 15/10/2021 18:57

The smoked salmon is lovely and great value - I've heard good things about the cured meat, but I only buy kosher for home!

stayathomer · 15/10/2021 18:59

Their bags of croissants, lemon cheesecake, orange juice, jelly beans, orange callipos...

userxx · 15/10/2021 19:02

@SockFluffInTheBath

The ‘posh’ thick cut Maris piper oven chips are good but need 40mins in the oven.

Best frozen chips I've ever tasted and definitely need extra cooking time.

SunndyD · 15/10/2021 19:08

Their ready to roll pizza bases are really good- in the chilled section with the pastry bits. It’s about 90p, groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-greenvale-pizza-base-385g/4088600107073 chuck on some toppings and mozzarella and it’s fab.. beats any other dough I’ve found so far

SunndyD · 15/10/2021 19:08

Cured meats are also great … really good leading up to Christmas too

DahliaMacNamara · 15/10/2021 19:09

Maybe a bit late in the year, but I like the fake cornettos, magnums etc, especially as they have the vegetarian symbol on the front of the packs (or not, as applicable). Less identifiable ice lollies are good too.

Agreed, it is so easy and tasty.

Someone said avoid their oven chips - I love them, especially the triple cooked ones & the chunky ones.
