New branch just opened near us. Tesco is getting more expensive so thought I'd give Aldi a go. Any recommendations of things to try?

Cheesy hash browns in the freezer are gorgeous.
And their Nobbly Bobblies are very good too, almost like the originals.

Gherkingreen · 15/10/2021 16:45

Moser Roth chocolate
Hot smoked salmon
Welsh butter
Smoked salmon
Fruit juice
Fruity bottom yoghurts
Crisps
Nuts and dried fruit
Fresh herbs
Salmon en croute
Wine
Granola
Fake mini magnums
Most of it tbh!

countdowntonap · 15/10/2021 16:46

If you like tuna, their tins of tuna ‘Fusions’ are half the price of John West’s ‘Infusions’ and delicious - especially the jalapeño one.

Their Sea Salt & Chardonnay Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps are the best sharing crisps of all supermarkets.

The Specially Selected Wood Fired pizzas are good too, as is a lot of their ‘Specially Selected’ range.

Also the Q10 serum is great.

Gherkingreen · 15/10/2021 16:46

Oh, the frozen crumble puddings - holy good
And stollen this time of year.

TheresSomethingAboutAndy · 15/10/2021 16:49

Their knock off Jo Malone candles smell just like the real thing

New Zealand Pinot Noir could be something you pay £25 in a restaurant

Fresh soups

LetHimHaveIt · 15/10/2021 16:49

Premixed cans of G&T are the nicest I've ever had.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 15/10/2021 16:54

The sweet potato burgers are delicious. I would highly recommend the sirloin steaks too. Generally the food is great but be careful with some of the fruit and veg, it can be quite near the sell by date

Artesia · 15/10/2021 16:55

The luxury brand frozen Yorkshire puddings are the best ready made ones I’ve tried, and the frozen beef dripping roast potatoes.

The aged steaks are fantastic, the ready meal paella is good, and all the deli stuff- cheese, cold meats, hummus etc - is great.

Indoorcamping · 15/10/2021 17:01

Malted bloomer bread, stonebaked frozen pizzas, the ready meal curries (the slightly more expensive ones), moser roth dark chocolate, pretty much all of the wine, peroni rip off beer

@ShowOfHands

Worth a search on here. There's at least one thread a week asking for Aldi recommendations.
I see these threads every week and read the things that come up that I have bought in the past (regular aldi shopper) and find I disagree with about half of the recommendations. But then I think that's actually not surprising because I like what I like and that's not going to be the same as everyone else. So my advice would be to try things and see if you like them and to avoid huge disappointment remember that it's just a food shop not a magical place of stuff you've never seen before Grin

At least that's my experience, in my area aldi is a bog standard shop, I'm a bit envious of posters who find it special.

MyPatronusIsAPenguin · 15/10/2021 17:07

Lighter than light Mayo
Their own brand Pringles cost about 70p and you can't tell any difference
All the crisps actually
They do big packs of 14 slices of ham in big slices for £1.09
Their frozen ribs
Their cashew nuts
Burger sauces

I could go on Grin

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 15/10/2021 17:08

Sorry to hijack a bit but is it actually cheap in Aldi still? I have been using the bigger supermarkets as Aldi is a bit out the way for me now, but I did used to save a lot of money in there and could do with slashing bills. Is it worth the mission or is it not much different to tesco/asda/Morrison's etc

Granllanog · 15/10/2021 17:08

Go in with an open mind ............everything is worth trying. Can't go wrong with the basics, pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes, tinned sweetcorn, flour, eggs, sugar.

SentDeliveredRead · 15/10/2021 17:12

Ditto, everything that has previously been mentioned also as a committed carnivore I love their vegetarian selection
Full of flavour and not smothered in bloody garlic
Anyone else getting a bit suspicious about how many posts there are about 'what's good at Aldi?' threads Grin

Isseywith4witchycats · 15/10/2021 17:15

their version of lurpak isnt that good but the valley spread tastes the same as anchor spreadable
deli stuff cheeses hams etc all good ,
the extra thick yogurts are all very tasty
the posh pizzas
tinned goods other than beans are all at asda mid range level
biscuits all good and cheaper than asda
curry sauces with the spices at the top are excellent
pasta sauces oils etc all good
laundry products big pack of loo rolls all good
a lot of their versions of branded spriits are equal and cheaper
crisps are normally equal to branded

I went away recently and was planning a shopping delivery to the holiday home..........I often use Morrisons so started placing an order. I then realised that Aldi had a store very close by and started placing the same order with them as I like Aldi..........it worked out a lot cheaper at Aldi, much more than I expected.
DentalWorries · 15/10/2021 17:18

@TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin I used to spend maybe £60-70 a week in Tesco. Without fail my Aldi shop comes in at under £50

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 15/10/2021 17:20

Genuine question, thanks for the ideas.

I'm popping in tomorrow so I'll have a good look around.

That does seem worth it then. I didn't know you could order from them online. Do they do delivery then?

Comedycook · 15/10/2021 17:29

The farmhouse yoghurts
Chicken thigh burgers in the freezer section
Gravalax smoked salmon
Salmon Wellington
Caramel crunch bars

Marmite27 · 15/10/2021 17:32

Prawn cocktail hand cut crisps. I let out a squee today when I saw them. They’ve been MIA since last Christmas.

Moser Roth dark chocolate with sea salt.

TBH the only thing we haven’t liked is the family lasagne ready meal as it had too much bechamel in for us.

Biancadelrioisback · 15/10/2021 17:33

Reed diffusers, all their beauty range, and to eat? Their fishcakes are barey

mamiofboys · 15/10/2021 17:37

I much prefer their fajita kits to any other brand and also their tomato and mascarpone pasta sauce (specially selected range I think) is lovely!

They do click and collect at some stores. There is a charge, I don't pay usually but I do some mystery shopping and have to use click and collect for that. I don't mind paying for the convenience of collecting an order at the start of a holiday!
