Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

Absolutely despicable to try and link this murder to Angela Rayner Hmm How low can you sink?

Franklin12 · 15/10/2021 16:04

Ninny. What an awful thing to say.

Etinoxaurus · 15/10/2021 16:05

@HuckleberryJam Labour Grass roots here and I think AR is wonderful. My first thoughts on hearing this dreadful, dreadful news was ‘and that’s why you shouldn’t say things like that’ re her comments at conference.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/10/2021 16:05

*We need to have a zero tolerance policy for personal attacks in the same way that is slowly being rolled out for football.

In the vein of the football comparison, politicians themselves need to learn to play the ball, not the person. That goes for them all, cos the personal attacks are one of the most off putting, unpleasant and alienating things in British politics*.

Agreed.

HuckleberryJam · 15/10/2021 16:07

People don't murder because they've heard someone name call for goodness sake. It's appalling to try and make the link

Samcro · 15/10/2021 16:13

how absolutely awful.

WakeMeUpin22 · 15/10/2021 16:17

This is just awful 😞

the80sweregreat · 15/10/2021 16:17

It's so sad :(
Awful news

littlbrowndog · 15/10/2021 16:18

So sad a dad and a husband won’t be coming home tonight

Just so sad for them 💐💐

Probably not as low as her.
CrotchetyQuaver · 15/10/2021 16:21

This is dreadful news. I met him many years ago and thought he was a decent man trying to make the world a better place.

Terrible that this is the second time in a decade that an MP has been murdered whilst trying to help others.

My thoughts are with his family and friends

Cactus1982 · 15/10/2021 16:22

I’m a lifelong Labour voters but think Angela Rayner is dreadful. Calling people ‘scum’ for having a different political viewpoint isn’t acceptable at all and she should have been sacked for that.

@WorraLiberty

so sorry for your loss of a friend. sending you much love as well as his family, friends & colleagues. such a needless tragedySad

Elderflower14 · 15/10/2021 16:33

They have just interviewed Sir Roger Gale. He is my sons MP and has been very kind to ds2. He was a close friend of David's. He was almost crying.... 😔 😔 😔

Glassofshloer · 15/10/2021 16:34

My elderly dad has been a staunch Labour supporter all his life and yet he and David were so close, with a respectful approach to their political differences. It never go in the way of their friendship

Such a rare thing these days. I’m very sorry for your dad’s loss Flowers

This exactly.

Lovely to hear your comments about him and your dad. That is the normal way people deal with political issues and differences in my life. But MNers can be very harsh on people who think differently and I wonder if that's becoming the norm, and my experience and the experience of your dad is becoming a thing of the past. Best wishes to him.

@personanongrata

FFS stop trying to make this Labour's fault.

Maybe the killer was angry that this government has let thousands of people die from Covid?

Or that Universal Credit is being taken away?

Or that the NHS is being stealthily privatised?

Etc etc.

No, obviously Angela Rayner's fault.

A man has been brutally murdered - stop trying to score political points from a tragic death.

Glassofshloer · 15/10/2021 16:38

I agree @madisonbridges

People are less likely to have nuance in their opinions, it’s just one-side-of-the-spectrum-fits-all. And anyone that steps one toe outside of ‘their camp’ are willfully misinterpreted & throw out into no man’s land.

Obviously we can’t speculate on who did this & why but it’s deeply upsetting & must be so scary for all other MPs.

girlmom21 · 15/10/2021 16:41

The comments about other political leaders etc were made when this was first posted, which was before we knew the severity of the incident and before the poor man had died.

Can we all have a little bit of decorum and stop with the arguing about whose fault it is/political agendas and just respect the fact that a family have lost a loved one?

You should probably take your own advice
A man has been killed, nobody deserves that.

HalzTangz · 15/10/2021 16:41

@HoldingTheDoor

How horrific. I hope that the poor man survives this and with minimal issues.
I think he has died
derxa · 15/10/2021 16:42

RIP He was one of those MPs that I was aware of. Nice to hear your comments @WorraLiberty.
This isn't a day for party political sniping. As someone upthread said: a dad and husband isn't coming home tonight.

Eyesofdisarray · 15/10/2021 16:43

Dreadful news
Poor family

Dancerinthedark01 · 15/10/2021 16:44

I hope this isn't an awful thing to say ...

But why is it always the kindest people that are killed in this way? Of course that can't be the case. And I'm not saying that anyone should be stabbed or murdered. Of course they shouldn't.

But those who cause the division and fill the world with lies and mistrust - because let's face it there's a lot of people suffering at the moment and that's on the rise - well that is the cause of much of the doings of this government.

Those that have caused such social divide (and David Amess doesn't seem to be one of them) get away with it Scott free. It's too often the kindest people that this happens to.
