Recommend me a picture book about a GIRL

I'm looking for a picture book about a human girl. All our books are:

  • about animals
  • about boys
  • about girls overcoming sexism (e.g. Zog)

I want a story about a girl, that doesn't focus on overcoming sexism. We have so many books about boys just, doing stuff. For example:

  • Harry and the Bucket Full of Dinosaurs - Boy finds some dinosaurs and takes them everywhere with him.

  • Stanley's Stick - Boy plays with a stick and throws it into the ocean.

  • Lost and Found - Boy finds a penguin and tries to take him back home.

  • Alfie Gets in First - Boy locks his Mum out of the house and can't open the front door.

Can anyone recommend the girl equivalent of these books? Obviously, we will read the books about boys as well, but it would be nice to have some books about girls in the house.

Just seen you've mentioned a different Franklin and Luna book, a quick glance over this story does seem to centre more on Luna.

Interstellar cinderella
Paperbag princess
Billy and the beast

This has the added bonus of being beautifully illustrated too.

Gorilla! That is an awesome suggestion. We have the book in giant size and the illustrations are so beautiful.

And the tiger who came to tea of course, which definitely is not challenging sexism, since that wasn’t what you are after Grin

Recently been reading Meg and Mog to the DC at bed time.

And....Winnie Flies Again by Valerie Thomas.

There are loads that I can think of that I own (and I have three boys)

The girl and the dinosaur

Our girl (Anthony brown)

Once there were giants (Martin Waddell)

A kitten called moonlight

The big sea (Martin Waddell)

These are just a few off the top of my head that I love.

Another vote for : 'Girl and the Dinosaur' and the Princess in Black series.
Plus 'Hans and Matilda' which is about talking cats, but the cat is a girl in this case. (Hans is also girl, because Hans is also Matilda, who has an alter ego for when she just cant be good anymore).
In 'Interstellar Cinderella' Cinders turns down the Prince in favour of a job as a space ship mechanic.
And the 'You Choose' series features equal boys and girls, plus the real main character is the child looking at the book with oth you.
Cinnamon by Neil Gaiman also worth a look, a dreamy picture book for a slightly older child (someone is eaten off stage by a tiger).
There is also an illustrated version of Dolly Parton's 'Coat of Many Colors' about growing up poor but loved.

fitzbilly · 02/10/2021 21:10

Quite a few of Anthony Browne's books feature girls as the main characters

Clara's Crazy Curls by Helen Poole.
Great book written and illustrated by a friend.

mogtheexcellent · 02/10/2021 21:22

The little girl and the tiny doll was my fave as a child.

EdithGrantham · 02/10/2021 21:22

Sally and the Limpet and Dear Greenpeace, both by Simon James.
The Mog books by Judith Kerr feature Debbie as quite main character.

ActonBell · 02/10/2021 21:25

The Camping Trip - one of our absolute favourites.

Red Ted - mostly from the POV of a teddy bear who goes missing but the bear is owned by a girl called Stevie who is clearly awesome.

Bee and Me - wordless story, just beautiful.

Omar, the Bees and Me as well.

Topbird29 · 02/10/2021 21:26

The Princess and the Christmas rescue- not sure if there are other books with character.
Meg and mog
Mog the cat and spinderella - girl animals

The Snow Lion is wonderful

Jfw82 · 02/10/2021 21:31

@adaptiveness

Thanks everyone, I'm looking all these up now. I'm going to add:

Ruby's Worry (girl is worried, decides to talk to a friend about it and feels better)

Franklin's Flying Bookshop (Girl meets a dragon and they start a bookshop on his back - technically Franklin the dragon is the main character, but the girl Luna is awesome)

If you're looking at Ruby's worry I also recommend meesha makes friends and tilda tries again - we love those big bright feelings books

Also Julia Donaldson princess mirror-belle and the dragon pox

SaborDeSoledad · 02/10/2021 21:31

Mummy's Suitcase - Pip Jones
The Pirates Are Coming - John Condon
