Recommend me a picture book about a GIRL

I'm looking for a picture book about a human girl. All our books are:

  • about animals
  • about boys
  • about girls overcoming sexism (e.g. Zog)

I want a story about a girl, that doesn't focus on overcoming sexism. We have so many books about boys just, doing stuff. For example:

  • Harry and the Bucket Full of Dinosaurs - Boy finds some dinosaurs and takes them everywhere with him.

  • Stanley's Stick - Boy plays with a stick and throws it into the ocean.

  • Lost and Found - Boy finds a penguin and tries to take him back home.

  • Alfie Gets in First - Boy locks his Mum out of the house and can't open the front door.

Can anyone recommend the girl equivalent of these books? Obviously, we will read the books about boys as well, but it would be nice to have some books about girls in the house.

We've got Katie Morag books, The Paper Dolls and The Girl and The Dinosaur. I really liked Bog Baby and Ruby's Worry too.

And can I put in a word, for a few years time, for my all time favourite book Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf (Catherine Storr). Fairy tales goes wrong with clever heroine.
Also Ramona books.

The paper bag princess is wonderfully feminist without being preachy.

We also love amazing grace and Katie morag which have already been mentioned.

I also love red is best but that’s a bit dated...

The Paper Bag Princess, final line if I recall is 'you are not a Prince, you are a bum!' It's American and fab

Lucy's blue day is a lovely book about a little girl learning it's okay to be sad (and happy and so on).

I have a couple of the 'fantastically great women who...' books which are great and have lovely illustrations but non-fiction.

I haven't read it yet but Omar, the bees and me has been recommend to me. It's about a little girls friendship with a boy called Omar and promotes sustainability. I've ordered a copy for my class.

Sorry my autocorrect spelt Viviane Schwarz wrong! Just so you have it:

Viviane Schwarz, How to Find Gold and How to Be on the Moon
(These are fab and the main girl character, Anna, is also not white - I find it’s particularly hard to find picture books with girl characters who aren’t white, sadly - though the Mighty Girl resources someone linked to above are good.)

Mine all loved a weird book about a princess who stole a teddy from a little girl. Will try to find it.

Rainbowsew · 02/10/2021 20:44

I've sought girl related books for my niece and have picked up these lovely picture books for when she's a bit older.

"Franklin and Luna go to the moon" by Jen Campbell about a girl and her dragon friend.

"The stone bird" by McCartney and Benson about a girl finding a pebble and making believe it was an egg.

"Claire and the colossal treehouse" from the "we are girls" series by Bonney Press, all about empowering girls looks like there are quite few but this one is about building and designing and has pictures of all the girls using tools etc to build a tree house.

Katie Morag is lovely too for young ones as is Meg and Mog.

"Marmaduke the very different dragon" is one I often buy for little girls. Princess meg is different too (not like all the other princesses)and encourages the dragon to embrace being different to other dragons, a good lesson in not conforming to stereotypes and being a kind friend.

Green Smoke by Rosemary Manning not a picture book though.

An ordinary princess by MM Kaye was my absolute fave aas a child, still love it now but again not a picture book.

They are out there just need to look a little harder and past all the pink Princess cheesefests. I second a browse in the library too to see what you like.

That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown - really good book

NoraLuka · 02/10/2021 20:48

The Daisy books by Kes Gray. I found Daisy annoying but my DDs liked her.

Moving Molly by Shirley Hughes. Also by Shirley Hughes, Dogger where the older sister isn’t the main character but def saves the day!

For slightly older kids, the Cici’s journal series.

PeachesPumpkin · 02/10/2021 20:48

There are loads. Try your local library and have a browse.
My favourites are Katie Morag, Princess Poppy, Darkness Slipped In and all the Daisy books by Kes Gray and Nick Sherratt.

There is also a very recent and fantastic series of rewritten and gorgeously illustrated feminist fairy tale picture books done by current famous women writers, called the Fairytale Revolution series:

Rebecca Solnit, Cinderella Liberator
Malorie Blackman, Blueblood
Jeanette Winterson, Hansel and Greta
Kamila Shamsie, Duckling

Handas surprise is good a for a non white girl character as is one we had which I think was a girl choosing fabric for a new sari but I can't remember the title I'm afraid. Same with a little girl starting a new school, lovely realistic looking paintings of children from a range of ethnic groups but mainly black children rather than white.

"Meesha makes friends" is on Amazon but more cartoon pictures.
