Recommend me a picture book about a GIRL

I'm looking for a picture book about a human girl. All our books are:

  • about animals
  • about boys
  • about girls overcoming sexism (e.g. Zog)

I want a story about a girl, that doesn't focus on overcoming sexism. We have so many books about boys just, doing stuff. For example:

  • Harry and the Bucket Full of Dinosaurs - Boy finds some dinosaurs and takes them everywhere with him.

  • Stanley's Stick - Boy plays with a stick and throws it into the ocean.

  • Lost and Found - Boy finds a penguin and tries to take him back home.

  • Alfie Gets in First - Boy locks his Mum out of the house and can't open the front door.

Can anyone recommend the girl equivalent of these books? Obviously, we will read the books about boys as well, but it would be nice to have some books about girls in the house.

Another vote for liking the A Mighty Girl Facebook page or going to their website.
It will give you YEARS worth of resources.

'Never Mess with a Pirate Princess' - about a little girl who goes to save her teddy bear from pirates.

Shirley Hughes, Up and Up - female central character, glorious illustrations, no text so you have to work out the whole story from the pictures, which is fun

When she's older, Judith Kerr's When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is a great read. I read that for the first time when I was 11, which was about right.

Might be a graphic novel not prose but the characters are brilliant.

In a minute, and Through my window both by Tony Bradman are great and v much fit the bill of girls just doing normal stuff.

Rita the rescuer series is ace.

In addition to the Alfie series, Shirley Hughes has the Lucy and Tom books.

I was thinking the same thing today when I took my dc to the library and tried to find some fun picture books where the main character is a girl but it's not about sexism and nothing overly moralistic or anything about famous women from the past. Just a fun story but the main character happens to be a girl.

Nanette's baguette is a fun one.

Charlie and Lola - narrated by Charlie ,but Lola is the focus.

Anna Hibiscus

We have an Usborne picture book collection with some stories with a girl as the main character :

The nutcracker

Not quite picture but the Clarice Bean books are good. Better than Charlie and Lola, I think.

You haven’t mentioned the age range but what about Little People Big Dreams, the story of a girl who dared to be different and is now much older, Vivienne Westwood. It’s inspirational for daughters.

Has anyone mentioned Dear Greenpeace by Simon James?
A lovely story about Emily and her whale, told in letter form, a true delight!
