Recommend me a picture book about a GIRL

I'm looking for a picture book about a human girl. All our books are:

  • about animals
  • about boys
  • about girls overcoming sexism (e.g. Zog)

I want a story about a girl, that doesn't focus on overcoming sexism. We have so many books about boys just, doing stuff. For example:

  • Harry and the Bucket Full of Dinosaurs - Boy finds some dinosaurs and takes them everywhere with him.

  • Stanley's Stick - Boy plays with a stick and throws it into the ocean.

  • Lost and Found - Boy finds a penguin and tries to take him back home.

  • Alfie Gets in First - Boy locks his Mum out of the house and can't open the front door.

Can anyone recommend the girl equivalent of these books? Obviously, we will read the books about boys as well, but it would be nice to have some books about girls in the house.

Billy and the beast
The midnight library
Ivy and the lonely raincloud

Loads about animals, mythical creatures etc.

I can catch a monster is great too!

Thanks everyone, I'm looking all these up now. I'm going to add:

Ruby's Worry (girl is worried, decides to talk to a friend about it and feels better)

Franklin's Flying Bookshop (Girl meets a dragon and they start a bookshop on his back - technically Franklin the dragon is the main character, but the girl Luna is awesome)

And Barefoot picture books are good for featuring characters who happen to be female/of colour/disabled etc without it being a big deal.

Just having a look on our bookcase:
Katie Morag series
Emma’s Lamb
Angelina Ballerina
The Girls
Paper Dolls
Enid Blyton girls school stories - St Clares and Malory Towers
Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House in the Big Woods etc
But there do seem to be much fewer than books about boys.

‘Millie’s Marvellous Hat’ by Satoshi Kitamura is brilliant - absolutely bonkers, and beautifully illustrated (and just happens to have a female protagonist).

Also Luna Loves Library Day (I think there may be more than one about her - we got it from Bookbug bag. Kind of about divorced parents but focus on girl )

Just checked our bookshelf and even the animal ones are mostly featuring male main characters - Hairy Maclairy, Elmer, Giraffes can't dance, Gruffalo, Tiddler etc. Never really thought about it before but it is odd.

This is a lovely book with great illustrations.

I hear you, I used to get so annoyed by the “boy and his magical adventure penguin/tiger/bear” genre that I felt like throwing them all away and only having picture books with girl characters for DD Grin

Some good ones:

Julia Donaldson, The Paper Dolls
Viviane Schwartz, How to Find Gold
Helen Stephens, How To Hide a Lion
Mo Willems, Knuffle Bunny
Eileen Browne, Handa’s Surprise

James Mayhew, the Katie books and Ella Bella Ballerina books

Shirley Hughes, Sally’s Secret; the Annie Rose books

Mairi Hedderwick, The Katie Morag books

Then a little older:

Dorothy Edwards, The My Naughty Little Sister books
Jenny Colgan, the Polly and the Puffin series
Polly Faber, the Mango and Bambang series
Abby Hanlon, Dory Fantasmagory
The Milly Molly Mandy books

We had more, so I’ll add some more when I’ve had a look at DD’s old books.

For older Little Miss Pepperpot

AdaColeman · 02/10/2021 20:19

Pippi Longstocking

Reckless Ruby

Anoisagusaris · 02/10/2021 20:20

A couple more -

Polly’s Pink Pyjamas
Princess Mirror Belle

StillUpSpooking · 02/10/2021 20:21

DD loves Ellie’s Magic Wellies and Paper Dolls. I think Bog Baby has two girls as the main characters too.

foxgoosefinch · 02/10/2021 20:23

Emily Gravett, Monkey and Me; Matilda’s Cat

There are also sequels to the Viviane Schwarz and Mo Willems books above.

PippinStar · 02/10/2021 20:23

Great idea for a thread!

Some ones we have on our bookshelf or Amazon wishlist:

Future Engineer
Dear Girl
Princess Smartypants
The Lulu series by Anna McQuinn - Lulu loves the library; Lulu gets a cat (these are lovely and DS2 loves them, as well as the Zeki series, Lulu’s brother)
Little Feminist Board Book Set
The paper bag princess
I can catch a monster

Also, the rescue princesses (animal rescuers) look great for 4-8 year olds.

HelenaJustina · 02/10/2021 20:24

I love Katie Morag so much, the television series didn’t do it justice.
Princess Smartypants
The trouble with Mum
The girl who loved wellies

The above are all picture books

Which is the Shirley Hughes with an older girl and younger sibling? DD4 is asleep or I’d creep into her room.

My Naughty Little Sister has aged well
The Dilly the Dinosaur series is actually narrated by Dilly’s older sister Dora
Dick King Smith’s Sophie series is absolutely brilliant.

HarrisMcCoo · 02/10/2021 20:26

Little Princess by Tony Ross?

Katie Morag series.

There's plenty out there.

foxgoosefinch · 02/10/2021 20:28

DD was also captivated by a surreal Allan Ahlberg picture book called Alison Hubble, in which Alison keeps dividing into two until the whole town is full of Alisons!

HarrisMcCoo · 02/10/2021 20:31

Most obvious one that's been at the forefront and probably in most homes up and down the country is Judith Kerr's The Tiger Who Came To Tea. Very well known. Fantastic book. My boys love it.

ladygracie · 02/10/2021 20:32

Laura’s star is lovely.
I second My Pet Star too - really great book
I will keep thinking.

CheshireSplat · 02/10/2021 20:33
